June is the 6th month of the year, and an indication that the second half of the year is quickly approaching. It is also the end of
the first quarter of the financial year for Rusoord namely April, May and June. We can then already determine whether we are
within the budget or if we are going to go over. Our Board Meeting also takes place as summary of all the committee meetings that took place during May, namely Residents
Management Committee, Events Committee, Financial Committee and Services Committee. It is also the month in which we give
feedback to all of our Residents during the Residents Management Association Meeting. There is also the inspiring Friends Group
meeting, Youth Day, Fathersday and we bring & braai at the end of the month. We also have two special performances namely, Henry Pike on 09 June 2017 and “Ge Korsten” en “Bles Bridges”

Henry Pike @ Rusoord Henry Pike led the worship team on 22 April 2017, “It’s time” in Bloemfontein. He is a local boy from the “ Die Bron” Church in
Northern Suburbs. Henry met his wife Justine at Hatfield Christian Church Bible school and got married in 2008. They were called to a church in Kuruman where they served for three years. Henry
was the Worship leader and Young Adults pastor and Justine was a Youth Worker at the Primary School. In 2011 they were called
by Gary and Rhona Kieswetter to plant a church with them and be co-leaders of Die Bron in the Barnyard Willowbridge Bellville near Tygervalley. Henry ministers on various radio stations, on
television, has his own radio program on Tygerberg 104Fm and has also released his first album. His passion is to minister to
people through the Word and music to motivate them to move in the power and manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Justine is the Children’s Church minister at Die Bron and has also ministered at
various woman’s meetings as well as on radio. Her passions are training and creativity in Children’s Church ministry, Performing
Arts and any other ministry where she is involved. They are raising their three daughters to live with the same passion for God and people. Die Bron is part of the body of Christ and is primarily
an Afrikaans congregation situated in Tygervalley. Our heart is to experience the presence of God and that each one will reflect His
glory. Here believers are encouraged to activate their faith and to be part of the revival that God brings in people’s lives.

90th Birthday Mary May Jacobs Mrs Mary May Jacobs enjoyed celebrating her
90th birthday at Plumrus on 28th April with the residents and close relatives. It was a fun filled
afternoon as they sang Happy Birthday and many familiar songs, as her grand nephew Chevaunne Jacobs played the piano. We
remembered that Mrs Jacobs had met the queen of
England when she was visiting SA. Mrs Jacobs still has the Cultured Pearl
necklace presented to her by the queen. What a gracious
lady you are Mrs Mary May Jacobs.

Jou gesindheid maak ’n verskil! Wat dink jy het die grootste uitwerking op jou geluk?
jou omstandighede
jou gene jou gesindheid
PARTY sou “omstandighede” kies. Hulle sê dalk: “Ek sou gelukkig gewees het . . .
“as ek maar net meer geld gehad het”
“as ek maar net gelukkig getroud was” “as ek maar net gesonder was”
Maar in werklikheid het geluk dikwels meer te doen met jou gesindheid as met jou omstandighede of jou gene. En dit is goeie
nuus. Waarom? Want anders as jou omstandighede of jou gene —waaraan jy min of niks kan doen nie — kan jy iets aan jou
gesindheid doen. “’N GOEIE GENEESMIDDEL”
’n Bybelspreuk sê: “’n Vrolike mens is ’n gesonde mens, ’n neerslagtige mens raak uitgeput” (Spreuke17:22, Nuwe
Afrikaanse Bybelvertaling). Met ander woorde, jou gesindheid maak ’n verskil! Dit kan bepaal of jy ’n doelwit bereik of tou opgooi en of ’n tragedie die beste of die slegste in jou na vore
bring.
Mrs Manual on a Mission
Mrs Manual, a resident of Rusoord knits the balls seen in the picture above and donates them to less fortunate organisations. As you might know Mrs Manual also organises the yearly Big Walk
and does a lot of volunteer work at Douglas Murray. She is such a beautiful example of what we all should strive to do and be.
Thank you for your continued involvement in the community.

Enjoy Once upon a time… The king called on the royal weather forecaster and inquired as to the weather forecast for the next
few hours. The royal weatherman assured him that there was no chance of rain for at least 4 days. So the king went fishing with
his wife, the queen. On the way he met a farmer on his donkey. Upon seeing the king the farmer said, “Your Majesty, you should return to the palace! In just a short time I expect a huge amount
of rain to fall in this area.” The king was polite and considerate, he replied: “Thanks for your concern, but don’t worry. It’s not
going to rain today. I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an extensively educated and experienced professional. And besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave
me a very different forecast. I trust him.” So the king continued on his way. However a short time later a torrential rain fell from
the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked and their entourage chuckled upon seeing them in such a shameful condition. Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the
order to fire the professional. Then he summoned the farmer and offered him the prestigious and high paying role of royal
forecaster. The farmer said, “Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtained the information about rain today from my donkey. If I see my ass’s ears drooping, it means
with certainty that it will rain very soon.” So the king hired the donkey instead. And thus began the practice of hiring asses to
work in the government and occupy its highest and most influential positions.

A poem that Mrs
Margaret Macready’s 15 year old granddaughter
Rebecca wrote about her. Rebecca and her Nana Margaret were
very close for the first 6 years of Rebecca’s life
and my mom’s journey with Alzheimer’s has profoundly impacted on
Rebecca. My mom (who she called ‘Nana’) taught
her to read by the age of 3 and the two of them went on many wonderful
adventures together.
NANA MARGARET
She loves like the sun Not just you but everyone
Red hair like the fire within her soul
Just look at this fascinating life you stole
Never letting go of her, so selfish Lionhearted yet no more to accomplish
Brain off, heart on
Let’s just be grateful her presence is not gone
Her cheeks rosie like a robin in Winter Smile of warmth never leaves you like a splinter
Face full of confusion in a world she now doesn’t know But a spark of remembrance, oh how her eyes glow
Along with the birds singing Amazing Grace A wholehearted performance you couldn’t replace
Her life will be cherished and never ignored Because how could you forget a woman so adored

Reasons Why Gardening Is Good For Your Health Research shows what gardeners have instinctively known for generations – that gardening is good for your health. The world is
in a national health crisis with substantial economic and social implications. Most of us spend more than 90% of our time
indoors, leading an extremely sedentary, unhealthy, and unnatural lifestyle. More and more people are obese; incurring enormous health care costs and premature deaths.
1. Gardening can reduce your risk of stroke also reducing the risk of heart disease and other life threatening
diseases. It lowers your blood pressure and cholesterol levels and has also been found to help prevent type 2 diabetes. 2. Gardening burns calories and is helpful in weight
maintenance. Gardening is considered moderate to high-intensity exercise. You can burn up to 330 calories during just one
hour of light gardening and yard work – more than lifting weights for the same amount of time. 3. Gardening decreases the likelihood of osteoporosis and
is especially good for people suffering from arthritis. When you dig, plant, weed, and engage in repetitive tasks that require
strength or stretching, all of the major muscle groups are getting a good work out and you are exercising your fine motor skills. 4. Gardening is a stress buster and a good way to work out
anger and aggression. This may be an even more effective stress buster than other leisure activities. In a study two groups
of students were told to either read indoors or garden for thirty minutes after completing a stressful task. The group that gardened exhibited lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
As your body gets healthier your mind improves too. 5. Being surrounded by flowers improves one’s health.
Behavioural research shows that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods and have an immediate impact on
happiness, and long term positive effects on mood, and make for more intimate connections between individuals. It has also been found that hospital patients who have a view of gardens and trees
recover faster than those who don’t. 6. Gardening is a way of making meaning out of our lives
and helps one cope with grief. Being in the garden and feeling a connection to the land affords us the opportunity to focus on
11
beauty and inspires us to experience feelings of awe, gratitude,
and abundance. 7. The act of gardening enables us to an altered state of
consciousness – similar to what a jogger or one who practices yoga or meditation can experience. The transcendent state is a magical and spiritual place where one experiences the best of
what one is. 8. It is likely that gardening and flowers serve as a means
for survival; or in Darwinian terms, ‘survival of the fittest’. For more than 5000 years, people have cultivated flowers. There must be a reason why this practice continues to exist. How
satisfying it is to have spinach or a carrot on your plate that you grew yourself.
9. Digging in the soil improves the immune system. Children who are exposed to dirt in the formative years develop healthier, stronger immune systems when compared to children whose
parents keep them squeaky clean. They have a lower incidence of asthma, eczema and allergies later in life. Exposure to dirt in
childhood promotes good health and is a good investment for later life.
10. Gardening improves relationships and provides a social outlet. Studies show that people who spend more time around plants are much more likely to try and help others, and often
have more advanced social relationships. People who care for nature are more likely to care for others, reaching out to their
peers and forming shared bonds resulting from their common interests. 11. Gardening may lower the risk of dementia. Two separate
studies that followed people in their 60s and 70s for up to 16years found, respectively, that those who gardened regularly had a 36%
and 47% lower risk of dementia than non-gardeners, even when a range of other health factors were taken into account. 12. Gardening strengthens your immune system. While
you’re outdoors basking in the sun, you’ll also soak up plenty of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium; which helps keep
your bones strong and your immune system healthy. Your plants need you and if you tend them well, they will reward you with beauty, food, health, self-esteem and a
great sense of satisfaction.

Worried about memory loss? How often have you lost your keys or forgotten someone’s name? Have you gone to fetch something and forgotten what you
wanted? This kind of forgetfulness happens to everyone at some stage. However, this experience becomes more common as we
get older. This does cause one to worry. Some of the possible causes are – stress, depression and physical illnesses. This is one reason why one should see a doctor if you are concerned about
forgetfulness. The underlying cause may be helped by treatment or reducing stress. Some people put off a discussion with a doctor
as they fear dementia. However, an early diagnosis, gives one the chance to put support structures in place at an early stage and to start treatment. Some memory problems seen in dementia are –
getting lost on a route that is familiar, forgetting how to do a task that has been done for years, not able to follow conversations.
What also happens is that people can forget words used daily. With dementia, one forgets what happened recently but remembers things from years ago. To help someone, be honest.
Ask how they feel about their memory and say you are worried because you care. Try not to sound as though you are criticising
or blaming them.

Jewish Compassion A 25-year-old Jewish girl tells her mum that she might be
pregnant. Very worried, the mother goes to the local pharmacy and buys a pregnancy test kit. The test confirms that her daughter is pregnant. Shouting and crying, the mother says,
"Who was the selfish bastard who did this to you? I demand to know! Without answering, the girl picks up the phone and makes
a call. Half an hour later, a Bentley stops in front of their house. A middle-aged and very distinguished man steps out of the car and enters the house. He sits in the lounge with the father and
mother, and tells them, "Your daughter has informed me of the problem. I can't marry her because of my personal family
situation but I'll take charge. I will pay all costs and provide for your daughter for the rest of her life." He continues, "Additionally, if a girl is born I will bequeath two retail furniture stores, a deli, a
chateau in France and a R1m bank account." He continues, "If a boy is born my legacy will be a chain of jewellery stores and a
R25m bank account." "However, if there is a miscarriage I'm not sure what to do. What would you suggest?" All silent at this point,
the mother places a hand firmly on the man's shoulder and says, "You'll try again."

The Joys of Womanhood – By Mrs Biggar Women over 50 don’t have babies because they would put
them down and forget where they left them.
One of life’s mysteries is how a 2 pound box of candy can make a woman gain 5lbs.
My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely. The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight
shoes.
The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don’t know what you’re doing, someone else does.
The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends.
Just when I was getting used to yesterday along came
today. Sometimes I think I understand everything then I regain
consciousness. I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept
rubbing together and setting my pantyhose on fire.
Amazing: You have something in your closet for awhile and it shrinks two sizes.
The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him.
I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress
are – eating too much, impulse buying and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day.
Bumper Stickers for the elderly
I’m speeding because I have to get there before I forget
where I’m going. I’m not drunk I’m trying to miss the potholes.
When I was in my younger days I weighed a few pounds less. I
needn’t hold my tummy in to wear a belted dress BUT now that I am older I’ve set my body free. There’s comfort of elastic where once my waist would be.
You are what you eat. So I only eat rich food.
I have metal fillings in my teeth. My fridge magnets keep pulling me into the kitchen. That’s why I can’t lose weight.

Plumstead Rusoord Senior Centre To care for someone who once cared
for us is the highest honour. Getting old is an inevitable
process. It is inherent to human being. And with old age comes maturity, wisdom and respectability. Elderly people are precious.
They are the revered members of our family, wise sages and keeper of traditions. They are a goldmine storehouse of knowledge. Personally, I feel caring for the elderly aids to self-
development. Old-age is a time when they need help in things they effortlessly do by themselves before. It is a time when
they need attention and affection. Elderly are the truest form of wisdom. They have lived for a long time- from generations to generations. They teach us respect, perseverance, wisdom. By
being with them and caring for them establish relationships. Connecting with them we learn to grow. We learn patience and
tolerance by caring for them. As they have lived long they know life very well. They have been through the ups and downs of life. We learn how to face problems we learn everyone have to face
problems and anyone can overcome it. Elderly people love to share. They deal with things very deeply. They teach us to look at
things in a deeper level rather than waddling in the shallow pool. Elderly helps us to see people as well as ourselves differently in a good way. There teach us that that there is so much more to
things as well as people than they appear. We learn our identity and discover who we really are by being with them. We become
more self aware and wiser through all the things they teach and do. Through their actions we imbibe better the seeds they sown Through their calmness and serenity from all the experiences and
lessons they have learnt and gathered through the years they provide us a better platform for us follow and imitate as actions
speak louder than words. Caring for them benefits us in many ways and prepares us to face life and overcome it. All the little
things that we learnt through caring strengthens us and help us to live life in fulfilment and satisfaction; storing all the things that we learnt and doing it. Elderly teach us the value of family,
relationships and life. As humans are industrious being- we don’t like to feel stagnant. We love progress. And through progress we
win. Caring for the elders help us to grow in many ways which altogether lead to who we are. We owe to them. We will not be here if it were not for them. WE CARE
