Keaton Henson has released a surprise new album 'Romantic Works', his first collection of classical compositions. It was made available without prior warning on the same day as his biggest show to date; headlining London's Queen Elizabeth Hall at the personal request of UNKLE's James Lavelle

for Meltdown Festival (with Keaton's show selling out in a morning).

'Romantic Works' follows Keaton Henson's acclaimed second record 'Birthdays', which was named one of Rough Trade's Albums of the Year, saw him collaborate with Sir Derek Jacobi, and complete a remarkable return to the live arena. Tired and full of thought, among new songs about touring, staying indoors and lost love, Henson found himself writing quiet, instrumental pieces. As they began to build up, he decided he would teach himself the art of orchestration and arrangement, despite his inability to read or write music; inspired by the repetition and simplicity of the likes of Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and Henryk Gorecki with instrumental influences from Keaton's long-time idols, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Saint-Saëns.

All about emotion, with no strict rules - but using his knowledge of how to craft a pop song - these pieces grew into 'Romantic Works': a stunning collection of works for cello, woodwind and piano. Dubbed "bedroom classical", the album was recorded entirely in Keaton's small bedroom in London, together with close friend and guildhall virtuoso cellist Ren Ford. As an album, 'Romantic Works' is a bold and idiosyncratic crossover of indie and classical, and another twist in the career of this unpredictable young singer, songwriter, visual artist and poet.

Drowned In Sound and the Guardian both included Romantic Works in their alternative Mercury Music Prize lists.

The film X+Y featuring a prominent sync for Elevator Song is coming out in March having premiered at Toronto and London Film Festivals to great reviews. The film features several Keaton songs. Voodoo Funk’s latest onslaught of blistering Nigerian disco and Afro-funk released through Honest Jon's Records.

Tony Grey’s two inclusions, from the early-eighties with the Ozimba Messengers, were originally released on different LPs: irresistible Afro-disco, layered with delirious syn-drums and sick keys, and featuring a horn-line bumptiously whipped from Louis ‘Thunder Thumbs’ Johnson’s bass-playing on MJ’s Workin’ Day And Night.

At the close of the 1970s, just a couple of years after the classic psych-funk of Float, Tirogo - Wilf Ekanem and crew - trained their frazzled peepers on Disco. The ensuing Aiye People LP is a stunner and a collector’s legend. Afro-fried Kool And The Gang on a mission to ‘blow your soul on fire’, featuring space-jazzbo Fred Fisher on trombone and the E Gang Sisters on sassy backing vocals.

Eno Louis gained a solid background in traditional Edo music as a student in Benin City, south-east Nigeria. He lived at Fela’s Kalakuta Republic till the army raid in 1978, when he moved to the US for a couple of years. On his return, he recorded with Edo funk powerhouse The Talents Of Benin, and quickly became a mainstay of the flourishing disco and boogie scene.

Bayo Damazio’s couple of contributions are classy, spaced funk, originally issued in 1981 by Phonodisk, the most ambitious Nigerian label at that time. Recruiting a crack team of predominantly Cameroonian musicians, with the Nigerian dancefloor on tenterhooks, producer Tony Essien was on the lookout for a successor to singer Kris Okotie, who had abruptly defected to EMI.

An unsung pioneer, Mona Finnih was Nigeria’s first female pop bandleader. Breaking through with The Sunflowers in Nigeria’s late-sixties soul explosion, Mona moved to the US after the group’s equipment was destroyed in a car accident. There she was active in the new jazz scene, before returning home towards the end of the seventies. These two cuts are late-seventies boogie-down cosmic funk, like full-throttle Roy Ayers, at his most brilliant.

Finally to the Afro-space-disco contagion of First Planet — shuffling and wiggling, synthy and bubbling — from this re-incarnation of Willy Nfor’s Mighty Flames, recruited mostly from the wave of Cameroonian musicians drawn to Nigeria in the late-1970s by its heavy new funk sound.

Glasgow legend Al Kent's Edits of Far Out's latest 12" The Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra, Far Out’s 20th anniversary disco project, released its double LP earlier this year. It features the arrangements of Azymuth’s late Maestro José Roberto Bertrami and

the legendary Arthur Verocai alongside a host of other Brazilian musical icons.

Previous producers providing their re-works to the series include Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman, Mark Pritchard, 4hero, Isoul8, LTJ Xperience and many more. Al Kent is Glasgow’s answer to Walter Gibbons. With the recent re-popularisation of disco music and the relative saturation of edit culture, Al Kent once again demonstrates what re-editing is all about. His use of analogue equipment mirrors the original intentions of the FOMDO project which was recorded in Rio using all analogue equipment, including 2” Ampex tape, Neve compressors and an SSL desk.

On this 12” Al Kent strips the original disco masterpieces down to their bare bones, letting the splendour of Betrami and Verocai’s arrangements really shine through. Al Kent’s edit of ‘Disco Supreme’ is a fantastically drawn out 13-minute builder - deconstructing the original and piecing it back together within the framework of his signature (very) punchy drum sound. Betrami’s beautiful Rhodes float amongst Verocai’s soaring strings and at one point, these are the only sounds to be heard (it’s possibly the most beautiful thing ever!), before the song kicks back in in all its Brazilian disco glory. The b-side ‘Keep Believing’ is a slightly slower and heavier (yet just as club focused) groove. Its foundation is Alex Malheiros of Azymuth’s funk bassline woven tightly with Al Kent’s phased drums. Triumphant disco in the style of Tom Moulton and Walter Gibbons, ‘Keep Believing’, like the a-side, features a full orchestra and revisits the authenticity and glamorous hedonism of the late 70s scene.

Stan Kenton Orchestra – Kenton Roars at the Golden Lion £8.49 TCD1131 780291113121 CD TANTARA JAZZ This previously unreleased live session fills a vital gap in the Stan Kenton Orchestra discography as it is the only recording of the orchestra during 1969. Equally notable is the presence of the 23

year-old trumpeter Tom Harrell who began his illustrious career with the Kenton Orchestra, soloing on seven of the eleven tracks.

Following his break with Capitol Records this orchestra was an important step along the route that led to the formation of the Stan Kenton's 1970s full-time road band. Among the personnel were several players that would become key members, including trombonist Dick Shearer, lead trumpet Jim Kartchner, high-note specialist Dennis Noday, and saxophone/arranger Willie Maiden, who was already expanding the book with fresh charts like "A Little Minor Booze". But the player causing the biggest buzz around the bandstand was the young Tom Harrell who brought with him all the solo skills and originality associated with an experienced professional even though this was his first job with a name band. Eddie Thompson - In the USA £6.65 HEPCD2100 603366210023 CD HEP JAZZ Available for the first time on CD is a session recorded with his trio in 1962 by Eddie Thompson,

one of the UKs finest jazz pianists, plus five solo piano tracks recorded in 1975. Blind from birth, Thompson was born in 1925. By 1947 he was part of the London jazz scene, recording and playing in the company of top London musicians including Vic Ash, Tony Crombie, Ronnie Scott, and Johnny Dankworth. Equally at home playing mainstream or bop, in 1962 he decided to try his luck in New York and there he recorded the ten tracks that make up the bulk of this album. Returning to London in 1972 he was soon in demand, with regular BBC Jazz Club gigs, recordings for the German BASF and Doug Dobell's 77 labels, and as one of the first call accompanists for visiting American soloists. Making a return visit to the States in 1975 Thompson recorded the five solo piano tracks that complete this recording. Eddie's strength, other than his prodigious technique, was that he knew literally hundreds of jazz standards. He also had the ability to drop into the style of his heroes Garner, Peterson, and Nat ‘King’ Cole. Sadly he developed emphysema, which contributed to his early death in November 1986. After ten successful albums it seems the perfect time to celebrate vocalist Trudy Kerr's music with this compilation album, which showcases some of her greatest recorded moments. The

album is packaged in just a simple cardboard sleeve. Claire Martin said on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Line-Up "...that rightly so, Trudy has become one of our most prolific and respected members of the British jazz scene". This is so true looking back at her albums, as her music is stylistically varied with each recording delving into new territory. Trudy was fortunate enough to work with American pianist Mulgrew Miller on her album 'Daydream' and she chose to put 'Glad to be Unhappy' as the opening track on the CD as a tribute to him. Other tracks include the Coltrane-classic "Moment's Notice" from Kerr's 'Cloudburst' album, which demonstrates not only her vocal dexterity but also her skill at writing vocalese lyrics. From the album 'Déjà vu' Trudy performs a stunning version of "They Say it's Wonderful", intertwining beautifully with Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren's emotive lines. Trudy also worked on an album called 'Like Minds' with pianist Michael Garrick, and she has chosen to include a very moving version of "In a Sentimental Mood". As a songwriter she is coming into her own collaborating with her husband Geoff Gascoyne on their 2012 recording 'The Rhythm of Life'. Jamie Cullum described the originals as "new standards of today" and the two tracks featured on Contemplation are "Save Me" and "Poppies". This is one of the more unusual volumes in the entire Dick's Picks series, both with respect to band configuration - neither Mickey Hart nor Donna Godchaux (who was off tour having a baby) are here - and the circumstances of the recording, as the first

disc begins with a version of "Morning Dew" that had to serve as both a show opener and a sound check because the band was three hours late arriving for the gig!

Interestingly, the last disc ends with an encore of "Morning Dew" (in a particularly spectacular version) too, and one imagines archivist Dick Latvala chuckling over that symmetry as he put together this 4-CD set, which compiles highlights from two nights of a three-night stand at Boston Music Hall. Lovers of Keith Godchaux's keyboard work will find much to savor, as he is higher in the mix here than on probably any other Pick, and the "Mind Left Body Jam" on Disc Four coming out of "Playing in the Band" is stellar. But the ill-fated country-rock act recorded only one self-titled album, produced by famed Boston producer, John Boylan. So what went wrong? Well, The Unforgiven set new standards for rock 'n' roll excess, at one point being banned from the state of Colorado for life while on tour with ZZ Top. Then, the incorrigible band of guitar heroes was dropped by both management and label as they succumbed to infighting and the ravages of the road. As a result, this album never quite got its due; but today, it sounds like the Technicolor frontier love child of the Clash, U2, the Pogues, Def Leppard, Big Country and Ennio Morricone, definitely a hit record that coulda woulda shoulda been. Formed in Chicago in 1965 and known initially as "The First Family Of Soul," The Five Stairsteps consisted of Alohe Jean, Clarence Jr., James, Dennis and Kenneth ('Keni') Burke, and were managed by their father Clarence Sr., who also played bass behind them and co-wrote some of their material.

The Five Stairsteps cut two albums under Curtis Mayfield's wing before switching to Buddah in 1968 for their first LP for the label, ‘Our Family Portrait’, with lead singer/primary composer Clarence Jr. and his father as co-producers. The album included two charted singles, "Something's Missing" (R&B #17, Pop #88 and a cover of the doo-wop classic, "A Million to One" (R&B #28, Pop #68), a song written by Righteous Brother Bill Medley. In 1970, the group began working with producer/arranger Stan Vincent on the album ‘Stairsteps’. In addition to further Burke originals, there were two Beatles covers, "It's Getting Better" and "Dear Prudence," but it was the song originally issued as the flipside of the latter's release as a single that would ensure the group's place in music history. The bright and upbeat anthem "O-o-h Child" sold over a million copies, was certified gold and reached No. 8 on the Hot 100 and No. 14 on the R&B charts. Now reissued for the first time in their original form, these two classic soul albums appear together on this great release from Real Gone Music in association with SoulMusic Records along with three non-album singles*. ‘O-o-o Child’ is also featured prominately in the recent film ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’. Although her recording career only spanned just eight years, Newark, New Jersey-born Linda Jones left an indelible mark on the world of soul music thanks to her distinctive melismatic vocal style. Her phrasing and approach were so unique that, 42 years after her untimely passing in March 1972 (the

result of a diabetes-induced coma), Linda is still hailed by soul music aficionados and other recording artists.

She found a home for the now-classic and timeless track at Loma Records, the R&B arm of Warner Brothers Records at the tme, and within two months of its release, "Hypnotized" had reached No. 4 on Billboard's R&B chart and No. 21 on the Hot 100. An entire album named after Linda's biggest hit was cut in the summer of 1967 with renowned keyboardist Richard Tee providing the arrangements. Subsequent recordings included "My Heart Needs a Break," issued as a single in the spring of '68 and peaking at No. 50 on the R&B, and a version of The Beatles' "Yesterday," both making their CD debut. Also included are tracks from Linda's final sessions for Warner Brothers including a brilliant version of "I (Who Have Nothing)," 1969's "It Won't Take Much to Bring Me Back" and the single, "I Just Can't Live My Life" b/w "My Heart (Will Understand)," with the latter three songs appearing for the first time on CD.
