Mathias Eick reflects on distances travelled in this intensely melodic set of original compositions, which makes an imaginative journey from Hem, the tiny Norwegian village where the trumpeter grew up, to the vast plains of Dakota in the American

Midwest. It was to the Midwest that hundreds of thousands of Norwegians travelled by sea in the 19th and early 20th

centuries - and naturally they took their music with them. In similar

spirit Eick, a Norwegian improviser-composer strongly influenced by North American jazz, here reintegrates some of the colours and textures of his native folk music in these newly-created pieces. In the frontline of the line-up featured here he is partnered by the brilliant violinist Gjermund Larsen, whose roots are in the Norwegian folk tradition. Trumpet and violin exchange lines and soar together above a brilliant rhythm section with Jon Balke at his most lyrical, Helge Norbakken periodically finding pulses that can suggest tribal drumming or buffalo hooves, and the resourceful Mats Eilertsen helping to drive the music forward. The original inspiration for the album was sparked by a gruelling North American tour: “I’d been out on the road for a long time and was feeling homesick. Then we reached the area called the Midwest and I suddenly felt as if I was home. I had a sense of why the early settlers would want to build their farms there. It reminded me very much of parts of Norway.” ‘Midwest’ was recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. It is Mathias Eick’s third ECM album as a leader, following on from ‘The Door’ (recorded 2007), and ‘Skala’ (recorded 2009-2010). Mathias can also be heard on recordings by guitarist Jacob Young, by pianist-harpist Iro Haarla, and on drummer Manu Katché’s ‘Playground’.

second ECM album, they continue the work begun on the recording ‘City of Broken Dreams’, with pensive, abstract ballads which shimmer with inner tension.

Each of the players - Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi, US bassist Thomas Morgan, and Portuguese drummer João Lobo - has a strong sense for the dialectics of sound and silence. The repertoire is mostly from Guidi’s pen, but also includes the standard ‘I’m Through with Love’, Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés’ ‘Quizás, quizás, quizás’ (familiar to jazz listeners through, above all, Nat King Cole’s version), and ‘Baiiia’ by João Lobo.

Born in Foligno, Italy, in 1985, Giovanni Guidi began studying piano at 12, and was encouraged in his musical directions by Enrico Rava at summer master classes in Siena. Rava’s admiration for the pianist eventually led to him becoming a member of the trumpeter’s quintet. In addition to the trio and his ongoing work with Rava, Guidi has fronted a number of other projects including a quintet with Gianlucca Petrella, Michael Blake, Morgan and Gerald Cleaver, and the 10-piece Unknown Rebel Band which includes João Lobo as one of two drummers. He made his first album under his own name for Japanese label Venus; this was followed by discs for Cam Jazz before he joined ECM, beginning with ‘City of Broken Dreams’ (3706656), released in 2013. Sardinian-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura from Fermo, Italy, indicated the depth of their musical understanding on 2011’s ‘Mistico

Mediterraneo’, a collaboration with Corsican singers A Filetta. On ‘In maggiore’, left to their own resources, they explore a very broad range of material.

This includes original ballads by both players, improvisations, a theme from Puccini’s La Boheme, liturgical music, pieces by legendary Chilean songwriter Victor Jara and Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jaime Roos, music of Neapolitan composer Ernersto de Curtis, ‘O que sera’ by Brazil’s Chico Buarque and more. Daniele Di Bonaventura has spent much of his creative life bringing aspects of jazz and music of South American traditions together, and Paolo Fresu is one of the outstanding lyrical voices of contemporary improvising. When Fresu plays muted trumpet, he makes a point of bringing Miles Davis to mind; at such moments, Di Bonaventura’s bandoneon becomes a chamber orchestra behind a soloist. The relationship between the instruments is continually changing throughout this attractive programme, recorded in the warm and spacious acoustics of Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in May 2014, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Paulo Fresu, a prolific recording artist, first appeared on ECM in collaboration with Ralph Towner on the acclaimed duo album ‘Chiaroscuro’ released in 2009 though he can also be heard on the ECM-distributed Watt label, performing with Carla Bley on the album ‘The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu’ (recorded 2007). Daniele di Bonaventura’s ECM debut came on Miroslav Vitous’s prize-winning ‘Universal Syncopations II’.

song Our Conversations that Is taken from her new album. Recorded and produced by Lay Low herself during a period of creative isolation, the new material has been mixed by UK producer and Communion co-founder Ian Grimble famed for his work with Mumford & Sons, Travis, Beth Orton and, most recently, Daughter.

Lay Low had retreated to Hveragerði, and the relative isolation of her home studio, coupled with her parent's Reykjavik basement. Inspired by a room full of instruments, she pressed record - the only outside contribution coming from her friend Bassi, who plays drums. It captures a new direction for Lay Low, a steely confidence - adding flecks of ambient sound and layered vocals to her trademark acoustic sound. Each play reveals hidden melodies and new depths. "Giving up isn't an option anymore, I'm floating to where I belong..." Lay Low will be touring in Germany, Belgium, France and UK from 11th April till early January 2016 to go with the album release. Former vocalist with the Americana band Midnight Choir, Paal Flatta’s fifth solo album pays homage the late great Texan singer/songwriter Mickey Newbury.

Endorsed and praised by Newbury’s wife Susan, the album contains eight Newbury originals and two songs co-written by Flatta and his pianist Gøran Grini; “Newbury’s Voice” and “For Milton Sim”. Of the Newbury songs, probably the most famous is “An American Trilogy”, made famous, of course, by Elvis Presley who recorded and adopted it as an anthem in his Vegas shows. “There have been several cover albums of Mickey’s work, and some have accomplished what they set out to do while others have missed something. a favourite coupling in the LP era – to the highly discriminating. This collection, bringing together his three recordings for Decca, include several twentieth-century sonatas for violin

and piano with Monique Haas and Voicu's compatriot Victoria Stefanescu. All these recordings receive their first release on CD, and Tully Potter provides the insightful

liner notes. Ion Voicu was a legend in his own country, Romania, and in the profession at large, and appeared in most major musical centres. Yet he was not as well known in the English-speaking countries as he should have been. The long cold war and the dictatorial regime in his native land were mainly to blame for this state of affairs; but fortunately Voicu was able to make a few precious recordings on visits to the west. Ion Voicu was born into this gypsy tradition in Bucharest on 8 October 1923. His father was a violinist and the family could trace their musical involvement back 300 years. He made his concert début aged sixteen, with Paganini's First Concerto. Ion Voicu died in Bucharest on 24 February 1997. 'He was an outstanding violinist with a superb technique,' says his Romanian successor Sherban Lupu. 'His performances of the Paganini First Concerto were spectacularly memorable. I grew up as a small boy with him as a model for me, an aspiring young student. Wales is rich in folk songs, and the art of singing these songs is very much alive today,' writes Osian Ellis to the original note (reprinted in the CD booklet) accompanying this L'Oiseau-Lyre LP.

Renowned for his harpistry and to many through his recordings of music by Benjamin Britten (with whom he worked closely), this extremely rare recording, made for L'Oiseau-Lyre in 1961

here receives its first release on CD. What makes it even more of a collector's item is the fact that Ellis is both singer and harpist on this recording. It ranges from Baroque songs to music from the nineteenth century (Boughton's once-popular Faery Song) to folk songs from Wales, and includes a composition ('O mistress mine') by Ellis himself. ‘[the songs are] launched and sustained with arresting expressiveness. The reasons for his relative obscurity are not that difficult to understand. Outside The Netherlands and Germany he had no career to speak of, and during his prime he conducted in wartime Europe. Yet on the evidence of a handful of extraordinary commercial recordings made between 1951 and the year of his death, Van Kempen was clearly one of the most distinctive musical minds of his generation and one of the most individual Tchaikovsky conductors the century has known.

On 11 June 1944 Karl Böhm conducted Ariadne auf Naxos at the Vienna State Opera. It was, in his own words, 'despite the dark shadows cast by the war which was already long since lost, a feast for musical Vienna'. The occasion was the 80th birthday of Richard Strauss which would have undoubtedly been celebrated throughout the whole world of music had it not fallen at that sombre time. For Strauss, however, the celebration performance in Vienna signified one of the triumphal high spots of a lifetime rich in successes and fame.

Collectors will be interested to learn that the set includes the notes that accompanied the original LP release, a synopsis and details of all the musicians who participated in the recording (including three members of the Koeckert Quartet).

“Do It Yourself”, issued in May 1979, was Dury’s first album with the full line-up of The Blockheads, who brought the live tightness and excitement developed after a year on the road

Dury’s often-overlooked gem, “The Bus Driver’s Prayer” was originally issued on the Demon label in 1992. A return to form after the albums without The Blockheads, these fourteen songs

saw Ian reunited with Mickey Gallagher, Chaz Jankel, Davey Payne and John Turnbull, along with new collaborator, guitarist Merlin Rhys-Jones.

Stand-out tracks are “Poor Joey” and “Poo-Poo In The Prawn”. The recordings on the Bonus Disc remained unissued until 2004, and are made up of outtakes from the sessions for the album. With some classic Dury/Jankel and Dury/Gallagher songs on offer, virtually every track is the equal of those included on the album.
