BOOK WEEK - August 18th to 23rd Book Week is next week and we are encouraging everyone to support this exciting week.

Students will be involved in a variety of fun activities to mark this special occasion, including

the Book Parade, that will be held on Thursday 22nd August., straight after assembly. We

will also be holding an open reading session in each classroom and encourage families to not

only attend the parade, also to call in and read a book or two with your children.

The CGPS ‘Book’ fairies have been busy building, researching, purchasing and adding an

amazing number of new texts into each classroom. We recognise how important it is for all

students to enjoy reading at every opportunity and our ‘Reading Corners’ are proving a hit.

A current focus at CGPS is to make the most amazing ‘Reading Corners’ in each learning

space. We are fostering increased engagement, creativity and knowledge to develop all

children as active readers. A reading corner is a comfortable and engaging space in the

classroom for children to sit and read, selecting from a wide variety of text, many selected by

the children.

MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and

well informed and productive community members who are well prepared to become

active, engaged and responsible citizens of the local and global community.

KOFI KUNKPE - AFRICAN DRMMING WORKSHOPS We were fortunate to have Kofi visit CGPS on Monday, sharing his love of music, culture

and drumming during music sessions. All classes were of full of enthusiasm, energy,

laughter and very cool music. Thank you Kofi, Miss Effenberg and students for there

amazing participation in each session.

NITS! We have had recent reports of Head Lice within CGPS Community.

We ask that all parents check for Nits and treat if required. Please

support the school community in keeping these frustrating little

critters to a minimum. Please don’t leave this important check any

longer. You are supporting our school community by checking for

nits now. We also encourage anyone with long hair to have it tied

up at all times.

UNWANTED VISITORS - KANGAROOS Over the past weeks we have had a number of kangaroos within the school

grounds before school. With student safety being essential, we request that

you speak with your children regarding always avoiding getting close,

chasing them or moving towards the kangaroos at all times. Kangaroos can

be unpredictable and it is the best option to keep clear.

From late Wednesday onwards, the weather prevented us from doing many activities outside as it was too cold, wet and windy. Because of this we had to find a number of different activities to do inside the ASC room and in the computer room. The children did this rather well. The children played board games with each other and members of staff. I found out when doing this that a number of our children are quite good at memory games giving Georgia and I a run for our money. We also did a lot of colouring in and art activities in finding new drawings to colour in, constructing flags to put on our bags and cards for family members. A highlight was see-ing Jakobi make his own FBI badge to compliment the games that he was playing with his friends at school during recess and lunch. Well done Special Agent Jakobi H.! Construction was another area that the children played in using our Lego and building blocks to build all sorts of structures from the very basic to knock down to the quite complex to show off to family and friends. Arlen, in particular, was very proud of the building he built showing as many people as he could. Earlier in the week, when we went outside we played in the bush, in the sandpit and on the playground. Once again, the most popular activity outside was badminton with many of our children of all ages playing games against one another.

Have a great week,

Josh

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and California Gully Primary School is excited to be par ticipating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2019.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 8 A WIDE VARIETY OF FOODS IS ESSENTIAL Your child’s body needs a variety of good goods each day to function properly. No one food will pro-vide all the nutrition that the body needs, but a variety will satisfy the full range of requirements. Between the ages of five and puberty, kids are growing slowly and steadily, so the number of different foods they eat should increase gradually. The larger the variety of foods, the easier it is to satisfy their needs.

What you can do NOW For a child aged between 8 and 11 years, (These are average servings. Some children eat a little more, others a little less) provide the following (or the equivalent) every day: 4 slices of bread 9preferably wholegrain), 1 cup cooked rice or

pasta. 1 cup salad, 1 cup raw or cooked vegetables. 2 fruits i.e. 1 apple plus 1 banana or a small glass of fresh or-

ange juice. 1 cup milk, a small tub of yoghurt, 2 slices of cheese. A piece of lean meat, chicken or fish the size of your child’s

palm, or an egg and a small handful of nuts.

Good Idea!

Try to have as many different coloured foods from as wide a variety of sources as possible. For example, have at least a green, yellow., orange, red and white vegetable every day and cut them into different shapes to add variety to the meal. It can often be a good way to teach young children about colours and shapes.

Top Tip

The main types of nutritious foods are : vegetables; fruit; milk, yoghurt and cheese; lean meat, fish, poultry; eggs; leg-umes; and wholegrain bread, cereals, pasta, rice and noodles.

Healthy Snack Alternatives

It is not uncommon to hear children requesting snacks such as ‘a packet of chips’, ‘some soft drink’ or a ‘chocolate biscuit’. It is sometimes difficult to say no because the more nu-

trit ious alternatives are not as appealing or quick to prepare. Below are some suggestions for more nutritious alternatives for snacks.

Healthy Alternatives

Packet of chips (crisps)

Air-popped pop corn, rice cakes with cottage cheese, rice crackers with salsa, microwaved pappadums, a small

handful of cereal, wholegrain crackers and vegemite

Corn chips & cheese dip

Carrot sticks with home-made hummus or tzatziki dip, low fat cheese slices and wholegrain crackers

Chocolate biscuit Home made muesli slice or a bowl of cereal with low fat milk, wholemeal raisin toast

Ice-cream Frozen low fat yoghurt, natural yoghurt drizzled with honey or low fat custard with fresh fruit

Take-away pizza Home-made pita pizzas topped with vegetables and low fat mozzarella

Lollies Fresh fruit cut up, dried fruit and nut mix or frozen fruit, e.g. grapes

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
