With 8-Week courses, students spend the same number of hours in the classroom as they would in traditional 16-Week courses, but courses are completed in half the time. The shorter period for the courses allows students to focus on two subjects per eight-week session rather than the four or five subjects taken in the traditional 16-Week schedule. Studies show that students are more successful when attention is focused on fewer subjects, and they are less likely to get overwhelmed and drop courses. The 8-Week offerings also allow more flexibility for scheduling and may allow students to earn a degree faster. Registration for Second 8-Week Courses continues through Oct. 17 for the classes beginning Oct. 19. Current McLennan students may register 24 hours a day, seven days a week through WebAdvisor. New students should visit www. mclennan.edu/BeAHighlander to learn how to become a student at McLennan. For more information, contact Highlander Central at 299-8622 or visit the Enrollment Services Center. The foundation, in cooperation with the Comptroller’s office, encourages Texas families to save for college by offering competitive matching scholarships and tuition grants to eligible Texas students who are beneficiaries of an account in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund ® (TTPF), the state’s prepaid college tuition plan. Match the Promise scholarships are awarded in the form of TTPF tuition units. Approved recipients can receive matching scholarships of tuition units worth up to $1,000 at today’s prices, while top-scoring recipients also can receive one-time grants of tuition units worth $2,000 at today’s prices. “During the 2019-20 school year, the foundation approved Match the Promise scholarships for 61 students,” Hegar said. “That brings our total number of scholarships awarded by the foundation to 531. We’re excited about approving new matching scholarships and tuition grants for children who represent this state’s future.” Fifth through ninth graders who have a TTPF account and whose families have annual incomes of $100,000 or less can apply for the matching scholarships and tuition grants through Dec. 31, 2020. To be considered for an award, students must write a career essay and meet other requirements. 1 Complete details can be found at MatchThe- Promise.org or by calling 800-531- 5441, ext. 3-7570. Families also can enroll in TTPF during the scholarship application period if they haven’t already done so. 2 TTPF allows families to purchase prepaid tuition units at today’s prices for tomorrow’s undergraduate resident tuition and schoolwide required fees at Texas public colleges and universities, excluding medical and dental in- stitutions. Get more information at TuitionPromise.org. Match the Promise is funded by indi- viduals who have donated the cash value of property held in the state’s unclaimed property program, as well as by dona- tions from individuals, businesses and organizations and by state employees through the State Employee Charitable Campaign. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt public charity. Participation in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund does not guarantee admis- sion to or graduation from any college or university. Only the purchaser may direct rollovers, contract changes, with- drawals and changes in the designated beneficiary. Purchasers should carefully consider the risks, administrative fees, service and other charges and expenses associated with the Texas Tuition Promise Fund contracts, including Plan termination and decreased transfer or refund value. Transfer value is limited to the lesser of (1) the costs the Tuition Unit would cover at a public in-state college or university or (2) the original purchase price of the Tuition Unit plus or minus the Plan’s net investment earnings or losses on that amount. The Plan Description and Master Agreement contains this and oth- er information about the Plan and may be obtained by visiting TuitionPromise. org or calling 800-445-GRAD (4723), option #5. Purchasers should read these documents carefully before purchasing a contract. Contracts in the Plan are not deposits or other obligations of any depository institution. Neither a contract nor any return paid with a refund is insured or guaranteed by the FDIC, the state of Tex- as, the Texas Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board, any other state or federal governmental agency or NorthStar or its affiliates. The contracts have not been registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission or with any state. 1 Residency restrictions, eligibility criteria and minimum contribution re- quirements apply. 2 Residency restrictions apply. Comptroller’s Office Now Accepting Applications for Match the Promise Scholarships and Tuition Grants Gray Leaf Spot in Turf by Dr. Shane McLellan McLennan Co. Extension Agent Gray leaf spot develops rapidly with abundant moisture and warm temperatures on St. Augustine grass. It is especially trouble- some in shaded areas that remain damp for some time. Under these conditions, the disease causes serious thinning of the turf. Leaf spots first appear as tiny brown to ash-colored spots with purple to brown margins that enlarge and become diamond-shaped. In severe cases, lesions develop on stems and spikes and the leaves wither and die. Turfgrass may have a burned or scorched appearance resulting from death or spotting of the leaf blades. Just the same as managing other fungal diseases, you should avoid applications of quick release nitrogen fertilizers on moderately shaded lawns during summer months. Apply water early in the morning only when water is needed. Avoid evening watering which keep the leaf surface wet for long periods. Fungicides with the active ingredient mancozeb and myclobutanil are recommended for gray least spot control. Week (Oct. 23-31) – “Be Happy. Be Brave. WASHINGTON, May 15, 2019 – USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) will accept applications beginning June 3, 2019, for certain practices under the continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup and will offer exten-sions for expiring CRP contracts. The 2018 Farm Bill reauthorized CRP, one of the country’s largest conservation programs.

“USDA offers a variety of con-servation programs to farmers and ranchers, and the Conservation Re-serve Program is an important tool for private lands management,” said FSA Administrator Richard Fordyce. “CRP allows agricultural producers to set aside land to re-duce soil erosion, improve water quality, provide habitat for wildlife and boost soil health.”

FSA stopped accepting applica-tions last fall for the continuous CRP signup when 2014 Farm Bill authority expired. Since passage of the 2018 Farm Bill last December, Fordyce said FSA has carefully an-alyzed the language and determined that a limited signup prioritizing water-quality practices furthers conservation goals and makes sense for producers as FSA works to fully implement the program.

Continuous CRP SignupThis year’s signup will in-

clude such practices as grassed waterways, filter strips, riparian buffers, wetland restoration and others. View a full list of prac-tices approved for this program at https://www.fsa.usda.gov/As-sets/USDA-FSA-Public/usdafiles/NewsRoom/news-releases/pdf/SU52%20practices.pdf.

Continuous signup enrollment contracts are 10 to 15 years in du-ration. Soil rental rates will be set at 90 percent of the existing rates. Incentive payments will not be offered for these contracts.

Conservation ReserveEnhancement Program Signup

FSA will also reopen signup for

existing Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) agreements. Fact sheets on cur-rent CREP agreements are avail-able at https://www.fsa.usda.gov/programs-and-services/conserva-tion-programs/conservation-re-serve-enhancement/index.

Other CRP Signup OptionsFordyce said FSA plans to open

a CRP general signup in Decem-ber 2019 and a CRP Grasslands signup later.

CRP Contract ExtensionsA one-year extension will be of-

fered to existing CRP participants who have expiring CRP contracts of 14 years or less. Producers eli-gible for an extension will receive a letter describing their options.

Alternatively, producers with expiring contracts may have the option to enroll in the Transition Incentives Program, which pro-vides two additional annual rental payments on the condition the land is sold or rented to a beginning farmer or rancher or a member of a socially disadvantaged group.

More InformationOn December 20, 2018, Pres-

ident Trump signed into law the 2018 Farm Bill, which provides support, certainty and stability to our nation’s farmers, ranchers and land stewards by enhancing farm support programs, improving crop insurance, maintaining disaster programs and promoting and sup-porting voluntary conservation. FSA is committed to implementing these changes as quickly and effec-tively as possible, and today’s up-dates are part of meeting that goal.

Producers interested in applying for continuous CRP practices, in-cluding those under existing CREP agreements, or who need an exten-sion, should contact their USDA service center beginning June 3. To locate your local FSA office, visit www.farmers.gov. More informa-tion on CRP can be found at www.fsa.usda.gov/crp.

Prospective students still have a chance to enroll in online or blend-ed courses at McLennan Com-munity College this fall with the College’s 8-Week Course sections.

Studies show that students are more successful when attention is focused on fewer subjects, and they are less likely to

get overwhelmed and drop courses.

New students should visit www.mclennan.edu/BeAHighlander to learn how to become a student at McLennan.

For more information, contact Highlander Central at 299-8622 or visit the Enrollment Services Center.

AUSTIN, September 11, 2020 – Comptroller Glenn Hegar today reminded Texans that applications now are being accepted for 2020-21 Texas Match the Promise Founda-tionSM awards.

The foundation, in cooperation with the Comptroller’s office, encourages Texas families to save for college by offering competitive matching scholarships and tuition grants to eligible Texas students who are beneficiaries of an account in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund® (TTPF), the state’s prepaid college tuition plan.

We’re excited about approving new matching scholarships and tuition grants for children who represent

this state’s future.”Fifth through ninth graders who

have a TTPF account and whose families have annual incomes of $100,000 or less can apply for the matching scholarships and tuition grants through Dec. 31, 2020. To be considered for an award, students must write a career essay and meet other requirements.1 Complete details can be found at MatchThe-Promise.org or by calling 800-531-5441, ext. 3-7570.

Families also can enroll in TTPF during the scholarship application period if they haven’t already done so.2 TTPF allows families to purchase prepaid tuition units at today’s prices for tomorrow’s undergraduate resident tuition and schoolwide required fees at Texas public colleges and universities, excluding medical and dental in-stitutions. Get more information at TuitionPromise.org.

Match the Promise is funded by indi-viduals who have donated the cash value of property held in the state’s unclaimed property program, as well as by dona-tions from individuals, businesses and organizations and by state employees through the State Employee Charitable Campaign. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt public charity.

Participation in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund does not guarantee admis-sion to or graduation from any college or university. Only the purchaser may direct rollovers, contract changes, with-drawals and changes in the designated beneficiary.

The Plan Description and Master Agreement contains this and oth-er information about the Plan and may be obtained by visiting TuitionPromise.org or calling 800-445-GRAD (4723), option #5. Purchasers should read these documents carefully before purchasing a contract.

Contracts in the Plan are not deposits or other obligations of any depository institution. Neither a contract nor any return paid with a refund is insured or guaranteed by the FDIC, the state of Tex-as, the Texas Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board, any other state or federal governmental agency or NorthStar or its affiliates. The contracts have not been registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission or with any state.

1 Residency restrictions, eligibility criteria and minimum contribution re-quirements apply.

2 Residency restrictions apply.

Gray Leaf Spot in Turfby Dr. Shane McLellan

McLennan Co. Extension AgentGray leaf spot develops rapidly

with abundant moisture and warm temperatures on St. Augustine grass. It is especially trouble-some in shaded areas that remain damp for some time.
