What’s a nursery school?A nursery school is independent of any school, and because it’s a separate school, it

has its own head teacher and staff (trained teachers, nursery nurses and classroom assistants).

A nursery school has to be registered with the Government regulatory bodies and is inspected every year. It will almost certainly offer a

Government-approved early years curriculum.

There are different types of nursery schools, including:

• State nursery schools - funded by the local education authority and free.

• Community pre-schools - independently run on a not-for-profit basis (often by parents) and

charge fees, although your child may be entitled to a free part-time place

• Private nursery schools - independently run and charge fees,

although your child may be entitled to a free part-time place.

A Guide To Child Care


What’s a nursery class?A nursery class is a pre-school class attached to a school for older children. Its head teacher is the head of the entire school. It’s staffed by trained teachers, nursery nurses and classroom assistants, who are also part of the main school. It will almost certainly offer a Government-approved early years curriculum.

There are different types of classes, including: • State nursery classes - attached to particular state infant or primary school and run by the local education authority. They’re free.

• Private nursery classes - attached to particular private schools and charge fees, although your child may be entitled to a free part-time place.

Ages covered Nursery schools and classes cater for pre-school children up to five years. Most take children from three, but some include younger children. The child/staff ratio for children aged three to five in a nursery school or class is between 20 and 26 children to two adults, where one of those adults is a qualified

teacher and the other is a trained nursery nurse or classroom assistant.

Advantages • A nursery school or class will be registered and regularly inspected

• Your child will be taught by qualified teachers

• They’ll have an appropriate and structured learning programme

• They’ll be among children the same age

• They’ll may have contact with older school-age children

• They’ll may move directly to a linked school once he’s old enough

How to find a nursery school or class

Dowlais RFC has achieved phenomenal success in becoming 2009/2010 Division 4 South East Champions! To

celebrate their success, an event has been organised, and takes place on Saturday 19th. June at 3pm at the team’s Club House. Dowlais clinched the title after beating Abercwmboi with a score of 26-21.

Ben Browne, Manager of Merthyr’s branch of Nando’s, an avid rugby player and fan himself, is thrilled to be supporting the celebration of Dowlais’ success, and is providing a fabulous Nando’s barbecue on the day for all the guys and their families. Ben, who is from Brixton in London, says “I just love rugby, and have played it myself all my life, and the Welsh have such a unique passion for the game, and even though I am a Londoner, I am really proud that a rugby team in the town where I work has done so well.” Ben and his team from the Rhydycar Leisure Complex, will be dishing up the famous Nando’s flame grilled chicken for the successful team, on a specially designed portable Nando’s Grill.

Funtazia Day Nursery Ltd is celebrating 5 years of being one of the leading childcare providers in Merthyr Tydfil.

The company was set up in 2005 by Nichola Cronin and Vanessa Jones who between them have over 25 years experience of working with children. The company offers two sites within Merthyr, one in the grounds of Prince Charles Hospital and one on Brewery Road Dowlais, both sites have excellent car parking facilities and are easily accessable from both the A465 and A470 roads.

Both nurseries offer a high quality of care through fully qualified staff who are CRB checked and who attend regular training including Birth To Three Matters and the Foundation Phase thus providing a vast variety of learning experiences to children from birth to 8 years.

Many of these learning experiences have involved taking the children on local trips, recent ones have included going to the local library, local park, Cyfarthfa Park and museum, fruit and Veg shop, pet shop, supermarket and the post office.

The nursery promotes healthy living and encourages all children to participate in physical activities wherever possible, they are also growing a selection of different vegetables, herbs and plants. All meals and snacks have been devised using the Welsh Assembly Food & Health Guidelines for Early Years and Childcare Settings, and are all freshly prepared on the premises. All dietary and medical needs are catered for.

The nursery also heavily promotes and encourages all the children in caring for the

environment and helping others. Our waste policy includes reducing, re-using and recycling waste products, we are currently collecting plastic bottles to build a green house in our garden. Over the past 5 years the children and parents have helped to raise over £4000.00 for charity both local and global, including Barnardo’s, Children in Need, Princes Trust, Red Nose Day, Neonatel Unit P.C.H, Cancer Care Day Unit P.C.H and more recently the Haiti Appeal.

Having been the first nursery in Merthyr to become registered as an education provider, Funtazia in the Gurnos were also selected by the Welsh Assembly to be a pilot for the Foundation Phase and in January 2009 the nursery received an outstanding inspection report from ESTYN.

Funtazia offers breakfast, afternoon and holiday club to school aged children and a drop off/collection service is available. Both

nurseries also take part in various childcare voucher schemes.

The New Vauxhall Meriva, due for launch this June, is a car of innovation. Its radical, all new design, reveal rear

doors that swing open to 90 degrees, making it easier for children and parents to climb in and out.

Described by Vauxhall/Opel’s British Vice President of Design, Mark Adams, as ‘an expressive yet functional interior with great roominess and visibility’, the Meriva’s cabin is set to wow media and public when the car receives its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Dubbed FlexDoor, the rear-hinged doors create a “parent-friendly” zone when all four passengers doors are open, also making it simpler for parents to lift small children into their seats, claims Vauxhall.

To allay safety fears, Vauxhall says that the rear doors can only be opened by occupants when the car is stationary, with an automatic lock engaging as soon as the car pulls away.

The new Meriva clearly borrows styling cues from the firm’s Insignia and Astra models with a more purposeful, sharper nose, a more steeply raked windscreen, and a higher, more evident waistline. The top ES model has a panoramic glass roof.

To highlight the new rear doors and the Meriva’s more dynamic look, stylists have incorporated a ‘wave’ in the window line.

Vauxhall claims two new “groundbreaking” innovations on the newcomer; FlexRail, a modular storage system that runs along the centre of the car’s floor, incorporating interchangeable cup-holders, cubbyholes or armrests, and an improved system for folding

the rear seats flat and enabling them to be moved forward or aft, individually, to boost boot, leg or shoulder room.

Fuel consumption is claimed to be reduced by 15 per cent across the range with a line-up of six turbocharged engines ranging in power output from 74 to 138bhp. A high mpg/low CO2 ecoFLEX model will also be available.

With a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks than the previous Meriva, ride and handling are claimed to be improved. the five-seater Meriva will go on sale in the UK in June, with prices slightly above those of the outgoing model.

The Sales Manager at Merthyr’s Southern Vauxhall’s Mike Johnson says “We are genuinely very excited about the new Meriva, it has several stunning innovations that will add to the enjoyment of motoring”.
