Expressions of the Soul
The average student doesn’t like poetry because they don’t
“get it.”
What does it mean to “get it”?
Are all interpretations correct? Can you make a poem mean
whatever you want it to?
NO!!
As long as your interpretation is supported by the text, your
opinion is valid.
Here’s the deal…
When analyzing a poem be prepared to discuss these two
areas:
Here’s the deal…
Literary Devices
The meaning of the poem

I better write these terms
down!
Here’s the deal…
Because this is not my first study of poetry,
most of these terms I already know, so we
can skip those.
Here’s the deal with Literary Devices…
Example: Beowulf bode in the burg
Here’s the deal with Literary Devices…
Example: I’ll leave you on a higher note, than when Mariah Carey hit
her highest note.
Here’s the deal with Literary Devices…
Example: Car/popular
Bottle/ Model
Here’s the deal with Literary Devices…
Example: Sign in a golf-cart shop: "When drinking, don't drive.
Don't even putt." (Puns on "driving" and "putting" a golf ball, vs. "driving" a car or "putting" around in a golf cart.)
Figuring OutThe meaning of the poem
Here’s the deal with…
Steps to Decode a Poem
1. Based on the author’s biographical information, determine the time period and ascertain what the poem should be about.
2. Identify the speaker and the audience.
3. Using the +/- method, identify the tone. 4. Break up the poem into stanzas.
5. Read for complete thoughts.
6. Based on the complete thoughts that you read, attempt to paraphrase the meaning as you go.
7. Re-read what you’ve paraphrased, and attempt to summarize the stanzas.
My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips’ red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damask’d, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare.
Talking the talk…
Now that you have identified the literary devices, and you’ve figured out what the poem is about, now you’ve got to talk
about it!
Talking the talk…
Use the author’s last name and the name of the work to give your conversation that “scholarly”
academic feel
Example: In Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman”…
Talking the talk…
Pick something you can say with confidence….
• This is a poem about…
• Stanza 1 is about…
•There are a lot of devices in this poem, for example in stanza 1, line 5 ……
• This poem fits into this time period because…
• This poem reminds me of …
Talking the talk…The key is you have to
I came across this error the other day at a customer's house. They have Windows XP Professional with a password set for the main administrator account.
When they turned their computer on and it came up to the user login screen. They were presented with this SVCHOST.EXE error message. The only options the error message allows are to click OK to terminate the program or click Cancel to debug the program. After asking them several questions about what they did before turning the computer off, it became apparent that Windows Update had run before the computer was shut down.
Interestingly enough, even starting the computer in Safe Mode produced the same error. While the event log in Windows XP indicates the faulting application is truly svchost.exe.
How to Repair this SVCHOST.EXE errorAfter some investigating into the 0X745f2780 SVCHOST error, it became apparent the problem is a corrupted Windows Update in Windows XP. Follow the steps below to fix this error.
Verify Windows Update Service Settings
•Click on Start, Run and type the following command in the open box and click OK
services.msc
•Find the Automatic Updates service and double-click on it. •Click on the Log On Tab and make sure the "Local System Account" is selected as the logon account and the box for "allow service to interact with desktop" is UNCHECKED. •Under the Hardware Profile section in the Log On Tab, make sure the service is enabled. •On the General Tab, the Startup Type should be Automatic, if not, drop the box down and select Automatic. •Under "Service Status" on the General tab, the service should be Started, click the Start button enable it. •Repeat the steps above for the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)"
Re-Register Windows Update DLLs
•Click on Start, Run, and type CMD and click ok •In the black command window type the following command and press Enter
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
•Wait until you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message and click OK •Repeat the last two steps above for each of the following commands:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
Remove Corrupted Windows Update Files
•At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter
net stop WuAuServ
•Still at the command prompt,
type cd %windir% and press Enter
•In the opened folder, type the following command and press Enter to rename the SoftwareDistribution Folder
ren SoftwareDistribution SD_OLD
•Restart the Windows Update Service by typing the following at the command prompt
net start WuAuServ
•type Exit and Press Enter to close the command prompt
Reboot Windows
•click on Start, Shut Down, and Restart to reboot Windows XP
Although this method may not solve all of the issues with a SVCHOST.EXE Application error, I have found it fixed the problem with the 0x745f2780 reference error.
