Te Arahikoi is an umbrella organisa-tion formed by the 3 landcare groups in the Franklin area, (Friends of Te Wairoa, Whakapukou Landcare and Awhitu Landcare) local iwi, Auckland Council, Waikato Regional Council and the De-partment of Conservation with the aim being to attract funding and to support local community groups to establish pest control programmes.

Over the past two years, in collabora-tion with Friends of Te Wairoa, local programmes have been established at Orere Point, Kawakawa Bay, Ness Valley, Clevedon, Hunua, Ararimu and Whitford. They’ve been very success-ful, driven by a great deal of community enthusiasm, and after a relatively short time there are around 10% of local landowners signed up and actively con-trolling predators on their land. There is already a noticeable increase in bird life in those areas with high concentrations

of residents actively controlling predators. In Ness Valley for example, where around two thirds of residents are now active, bird life has increased dramatically in the last 12 months. Kereru, who were infrequent visitors in the past, are now everywhere. The speed of change is remarkable.

Efforts have largely concentrated on ru-ral areas so far and have not reached the suburban areas of the Pohutukawa Coast. That is about to change thanks to a gift from the Franklin Local Board, who had a little unspent budget which was directed our way by local board members Malcolm, Angela and Lance. Their efforts will allow progress towards making the Pohutukawa Coast pest free.

It’s closer than you might think. There is already a very successful programme operating in Howick, many Whitford residents are already on board, and there is such a lot of interest from residents on the Clifton Peninsula that we will be es-

tablishing a hub there in the short term. Omana Regional Park already has a

pest control programme and if there is good uptake in Beachlands and Maraetai then there will be near continuous cover-age along the coast. That will really start to change the environment for the better.

If you live on the Pohutukawa Coast and are interested in control of rodents and possums on your property, put Saturday morning July 25th in your cal-endar. In collaboration with the Pohutu-kawa Coast Community Association, Pohutukawa Coast Trails and Rotary we will erect a temporary stall outside The Franklin at the Pohutukawa Coast shopping centre car park. There will be a couple of experts present between 9am and 12.30pm who can discuss your pest issues with you and supply appropriate traps, bait stations and bait. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Let’s talk about making the Pohutukawa Coast pest free

Rugby club remains in the dark about lighting improvementsTwo hundred and thirty rugby players

from Beachlands and Maraetai are keen to see better lighting installed at the Te Puru sports fields, but Covid-19 means they may have to wait longer than anticipated.

Last year Auckland Council’s Parks, Sport and Recreation unit approved funding of $675,000 for floodlights to be installed at the eastern side of the Te Puru playing fields by October this year.

However council is currently reviewing all of its spending, and the Te Puru light-ing project will only go ahead if council decides it is a high enough priority to be included in the Emergency Budget. Coun-cil expects to make Emergency Budget decisions next week, and to formally adopt the Emergency Budget on 30 July.

Rugby club president Rob Fisher says

training under the existing halogen lights has become “challenging”, with players unable to see each other clearly. The club has looked into the possibility of hiring temporary floodlights, but the hirage and insurance costs are too high.

Franklin Local Board member Angela Fulljames says the board has advocated the importance of lights to council, but that it will ultimately come down to what the Emergency Budget can allow.

“All projects across Franklin and Auck-land are affected unless they are con-tracted already. With regard to the board funding hired lighting, the grants have been fully allocated for the 19/20 financial year. There is likely to be a grant fund for 20/21 but until the board finalises its budget following the governing body

decision, the amount and when cannot be confirmed.

“It is still very much a work in progress.”

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1motivation to make it happen. Building Jack’s Ridge was all about using the lay of the land to create a stage that drivers would love combined with safe and prime spectating opportunities.

“We wanted to utilise the contour of the land so we could get something fun to drive on. Compared to the tracks I’ve driven in places like India, our track is like a motorway,” says Andrew.

On Saturday 14 November, the City of Auckland Rally will include stages in the Kaipara Hills, Puhoi and Riverhead Forest before its conclusion at Andrew’s purpose-built road at Jack’s Ridge in Whitford. Andrew says he has also se-cured permission to incorporate tracks within the Whitford Forest, to be accessed via Brookby Quarry on Kimptons Road.

Sunday 15 November will feature the Battle of Jack’s Ridge - a standalone open category rally sprint over a 3-4km section of Andrew’s track.

Rally New Zealand describes Jack’s Ridge as “the jewel in the crown” which will be used as the power stage for Rally New Zealand. Organisers also remain hopeful that the WRC might return to New Zealand in 2021.

“We are taking this opportunity to shake-down Jack’s Ridge and the stages around Auckland to showcase our preparedness for hosting the 2021 WRC event,” says Rally New Zealand chair Peter Johnston.

“The FIA and WRC Promoter are aware

that we have invested significantly into the return of Rally New Zealand.

“We believe when fans get the chance to check out Jack’s Ridge, they will get a sense of the excitement and magnitude of hosting the World Rally Championship which we hope will be included on the 2021 calendar.”

Come November fans can expect to watch some class acts getting things a little bit sideways, including the likes of four-time national rally champion Hayden Paddon and 2019 national rally champion Ben Hunt.

While Andrew Hawkeswood himself has won a number of titles during his 22-year race career including 2017 national rally champion, and placing second at the Asia-Pacific championship in 2019, he says he will focus on his hosting role at the November event and will leave the driving to his son, Jack.

“I could never memorise the periodic table, but I could always recite every word of Bohemian Rhapsody,” says Matt Chapman.

Music has always been a large part of Matt Chapman’s life, and lockdown pro-vided the extra time the Clevedon-born-and-raised musician needed to put the final touches on his new album, Eyes to Sea.

Matt grew up in a musical family, and started playing piano at age 7. His parents had grown up in folk groups, and there was always music playing in the family home. In his teenage years, his brothers convinced him to sing and pick up a guitar, which led to Matt making the national Smokefree Rockquest finals with his high school band.

Majoring in bass guitar at the Excel School of Performing Arts was a spring-board to a stint as a professional musician, songwriting and playing guitar for Detour 180 which released music professionally and toured the USA. Matt was also part of an acoustic duo called Season Pass.

Matt’s family is well known for their as-sociation with both Clevedon Presbyterian and, more recently, Pohutukawa Coast Presbyterian. Matt himself is currently a minister at Howick Presbyterian Church.

“The church has always been a musical environment, so it’s no wonder that many musicians in the world today began in that context.

“Whether you’re spiritual or not, music has often been described as the language

of the soul. I believe in the power of a good song to help you process the experiences of life.

The last time Matt released music, it was as part of a band and the music was released as a CD. His latest album is his first independent project, produced in his home studio and released on digital platforms.

Eyes to Sea, which Matt describes as popular rock/acoustic/folk, uses the met-aphors of sea, coast and sailing to capture life’s experiences. He penned the songs for the people in his life.

“My four kids know very little about my former life as a musician and songwriter. I wanted to create a musical keepsake for them to always remember me by, and also create something I could share with wider friends, family and my local community.

“The album includes songs about all sorts of themes. Some of the songs are for my family, some are about current social issues, some about themes of reconcilia-tion, love and loss. All of the songs are in some way informed by my faith.”

Matt lives in Clevedon with his young family, and plays and coaches cricket at the Clevedon Cricket Club.

He is keen to share his thoughts about the importance of music.

“Music keeps us company while we work, drive, do the gardening, go for a run.

“A good song can somehow give you the emotional/mental strength to get through a difficult time in your life.

“It can provide a way to express yourself when you can’t find your own words.

“It can help you process grief, loss and anxiety.

“It can help a kid learn the alphabet.“It can challenge ideas.”Matt says he has no plans to become

a professional musician again, but will continue to write and record music as a hobby and share it with friends, family and the community.

“The most encouraging thing I can ever hear is when someone says that I song I wrote helped them through a difficult time. Makes it all worth it.”

The Legendary Chocolate

They were coming. I could hear their clumsy feet, thumping on the ground. There was nowhere to hide, nowhere to run. They were coming for me. I had sto-len the legendary chocolate. I know I shouldn’t have, I was just so hungry.

I could hear the two creatures breathing heavily be-hind me. They were right on my tail. That’s when it happened, I fell down to my doom. I was scared. This was the end of me I thought. They were so close I could hear their faint whispers and their warm breath.“Summer! We want our chocolate back!” my brothers roared.

ENGINES PARTS & ACCESSORIES PROPELLERS SERVICE & REPAIR

These days Honorary Fishery Officers (HFOs) have a vast tool kit of technology at their disposal but back when Trevor Collings started over 50 years ago, all they had was a little black Government notebook and pen.

Trevor is an HFO based in south east Auckland. He’s been doing this voluntary work for over half a century.

He began during the middle of 1969 after becoming concerned about mussel poaching at Orere Point, which was then a popular holiday retreat. He celebrated 51 years on the job during Queen’s Birthday weekend.

“I remember speaking to the fisheries department of the day and the Senior Fish-eries Officer asked if I’d like to help fight the problem by becoming an Honorary Fishery Officer. I was keen and quickly agreed. At the time of course, there were no such aids as cell phones or computers. The only way to make a complaint or report was by posting a letter to Fisheries or calling them on a landline,” he says.

Most HFOs contribute about 100 hours a year in their roles, so over the past 50 years, Trevor has tallied up thousands of hours protecting our fisheries for future generations.

It’s a remarkable achievement, says MPI Fisheries compliance manager Andre Espinoza.

“I first met Trevor when I was an HFO myself a number of years ago. His enthu-siasm and passion for the role is amazing and he is a real asset to the team. Trevor

has dedicated thousands of hours to this voluntary role. His commitment is stag-gering,” he says.

HFOs have been back on patrol since New Zealand went to COVID-19 Alert Level 1. Senior Fishery Officer David Warren says during the lockdown period, Trevor would regularly contact his team to check on their wellbeing.

“That’s how Trevor operates. Almost im-mediately upon receiving approval to re-turn to duty, he arranged a patrol. His team did about 100 inspections which detected six fisheries offences. A true testament to Trevor’s leadership and dedication to the role,” says David.

Back in the early days Trevor says his job as an HFO was simply to observe and take handwritten notes of what he saw at various fishing areas and then manually mail them to his supervising fisheries officer to further investigate. He had a uniform cap displaying the fisheries logo of the day so as to look more official while dressed in his casual shorts and t-shirt or multi coloured bush shirt on cooler days.

“In contrast, these days we have cell phones, hand held radios, cameras and smart uniforms, along with government vehicles from time to time. The tools of the trade have certainly advanced,” he says.

Across the country, the Ministry for Primary Industries has around 220 Hon-orary Fishery Officers. They have a range of legal powers under the 1996 Fisheries Act. HFOs are focused on the recreational

fishing sector in roles such as educating and conducting compliance patrols and they’re considered vital in protecting our fisheries for the future.

“There’s been so many highlights for me and I’ve made some lifelong friends. I’m as enthused about it as I was 50 years

Volunteer fisheries officer celebrates 51-years on the job

ago. Training and mentoring new HFOs are amongst the savoring moments, along with catching poachers!” says Trevor.

In 2001, Trevor was awarded a Queens Service Medal for Public Services in appreciation of his voluntary work as an Honorary Fisheries Officer.

One of the many exciting challenges of parenting is meeting the needs of our kids, while at the same time teaching them responsibility so that down the track they can ‘fly the nest’ as competent young adults, capable of meeting their own needs. It’s somewhat of a tension – what should we do for our kids and what should we teach them to do for themselves? Family Coach Jo Batts answers three questions she frequently gets asked by parents seeking advice on raising responsible kids.

1. At what age should a child take responsibility for their daily needs? There is no ‘right time’ for a child to take

on responsibility. It’s different for each child. What we’re really looking for in our kids is their ability to recognise that they are part of a team and that they can operate as a contributing team member. My advice is to start small and build.

You want your child to be taking small steps towards responsibility and inde-pendence, but it pays not to have a really rigid idea about how and when this evolves. All progress is good prog-ress. Kids develop at different ages

and stages. They learn to crawl, walk and talk in their own good time and the same applies to the way they manage themselves.

2. How can I encourage my child to be more responsible in the mornings before school? This question comes packaged with

another – how realistic is the goal of kids making their own lunches, packing their bag for school, remembering their togs/library book/homework…?Get kids started early with the idea that

the family is a team and everyone can do something to help. When your child starts school, it makes

sense that you are modelling and lead-ing the way with pretty much all the steps involved in getting ready for the day – from getting dressed to having breakfast and packing a lunch. With encouragement, you will find that your child’s ability and confidence naturally grow and you can then let go (bit by bit) as your child learns to take the lead in getting organised. Every child is differ-ent here but in general, things will go more smoothly if you stay engaged and alongside as your child learns to take on responsibility for the task in question.

If you just take it slowly, one step at a time, your child will have space to mas-ter the task without getting overwhelmed by all the ‘to-do’s’. Be prepared for the ball to be dropped a few times as they learn to take responsibility – there might well be some odd socks or forgotten library books along the way, it’s all part of the journey. Experiencing the conse-quence of forgetting something (library books and swimming togs are good examples here) is a helpful part of the learning journey towards responsibility, however it admittedly tugs on the paren-tal heartstrings a bit when the children have been dropped off at school but their lunchboxes have remained on the kitchen bench! Trust your instinct for the response that best suits your child in this instance.

3. Is a morning routine beneficial for children?Absolutely, though be careful that you

don’t expect too much, too soon. Help your kids by providing a list of morning essentials (which you could brainstorm and write together), and for younger children, perhaps some pictures of the few things they need to do in the morn-ings. Making their bed, getting dressed,

brushing their teeth, packing their bag… As your child grows in confidence, give them a bit more responsibility. Older kids could factor a household task into their routine – taking out the rubbish, feeding a pet, unloading the dishwasher…Independence is not the goal – con-

nection is.Things get busy in the mornings so

it’s important to appear relaxed and to speak calmly, and tackle just one thing at a time. Try and avoid the pointing and shouting from room to room in the hope that kids will ‘get it’. You will need a bit of patience in the transition phase between you doing it and them doing it. This is the time for modelling, encourag-ing and supporting as your child learns a new skill. While responsibility is a valuable life

skill, I think it’s even more valuable for parents to remember that independence is not the goal – connection is. If we can empower our children to be contributing members of our family team in an envi-ronment that prioritises connection, we’ll be on the way to raising kids who are confident as well as capable. Connec-tion is where the growth and learning really happens. Connection is always the key.

Education & TuitionEarly childcare centre chases PJs for children Polka dots, onesies, good old flannelette and all the

colours of the rainbow were on show at Chasing Joy Early Learning Centre’s pyjama day last week. It seems that every child (and the teachers) at the centre love a good dress up day, and they had a great reason to do so.Towards the end of June, Chasing Joy Early Learning

joined the “Jammie Army,” becoming a local drop off point for brand new pairs of childrens’ pyjamas that go to children in need in the Counties Manukau District. For every pair donated by friends and family, Chasing Joy matched it. In total, 70 pairs of pyjamas are heading to Middlemore Hospital: 33 pairs from families and 37 pairs donated by Chasing Joy Early Learning. Dedicated teachers all worked together to make the

project a success. It is obvious that the teachers at this centre care about all children, not just those that attend Chasing Joy Early Learning. Getting the word out became a task for the whole

centre. The children eagerly wore their high-vis jackets and went visiting all the shops in the local Pohutukawa Coast Shopping Centre to distribute flyers. Involving the children at every level helped them understand the whole point of our pyjama day.Parents of Chasing Joy really got behind the initiative

too. Knowing the pyjamas were going to a worthy cause was a great motivator, but it was fun choosing pyjamas too. Being parents of young ones it was hard for them to think of the children who aren’t so fortunate. One dad went to great lengths to choose awesome dinosaur pyjamas!Pyjama Day was filled with fun activities, and the teachers all mentioned how

everyone had a spring in their step. The weather decided to close in, so it was a perfect time to snuggle up and watch a movie (a real treat!) in the Treetops Room

upstairs.Chasing Joy Early Learning Centre may be small in numbers, but it has a great

big heart, and they are always looking for small ways to bring a little joy to those who need it most. Chasing Joy would love to thank the Beachlands community for being so supportive.

Four weeks after walking from Howick to Beachlands via Clevedon, Charlotte Symons still has the blisters to show for her efforts.

Charlotte (from Clevedon) and two fel-low year 12 students from Saint Kentigern College, Anna Maria Moehler (Beach-lands) and Bridget Han (Howick), walked the 43km trip to raise funds for World Vision’s 40 hour famine.

Charlotte says that walking for 40km seemed an appropriate challenge as the trio raised funds to help families in plac-es like Vanuatu and Malawi. “In those countries kids have to walk that far every day just to go to school, or get medicine, or see friends.”

The girls set off on their walk at 6.45am one Saturday morning from Bridget’s home near Stockade Hill in Howick. They wore high-vis vests and carried their school bags containing water, rain jackets, food and first aid items.

“We were really excited, and made it quite well to Whitford Village without any pain,” says Bridget. “It was definitely better to do with friends.”

Walking towards the sunrise was a high-light, but less enjoyable were the blisters they developed after their shoes became wet from walking on the grass verges.

The girls remained positive, and carb loaded with a pie in Clevdon before car-rying on the final leg to Beachlands.

“North Road was the hardest part,” says Charlotte. “It seemed to go on forever!”

Anna Maria says they talked to “lots of cats and sheep”, and were intrigued by what they spotted along the way. “I noticed so many things that I had never seen before from the car or school bus,” she says. Along with golf balls and street signs, the girls say they were disappointed to see lots of rubbish. “It made us think that we should have brought along rubbish bags,” says Anna Maria.

After 10 hours on the road, the girls reached Anna Maria’s home in Beachlands where the first thing they did was soak their sore feet in the bath.

Aching feet aside, the girls say they really enjoyed the experience.

“We are hoping to do something similar next year, maybe with a bigger group of people,” says Bridget.

Anna Maria says it would be great to see it become an annual event. “It would be nice to create a little legacy.”

Charlotte suspects their parents didn’t think they would make it. “We didn’t know if we could do it either!”

“It’s a great achievement that we are all proud of,” says Anna Maria.

So far the girls have raised over $700 for World Vision, but they are keen to reach a total goal of $1500. Donations can be made at: https://my.worldvision.org.nz/ss/RVzFeH/bridget-anna-maria-charlotte
