Poised for Greatness! A community of excellence
Pictured above from left to right: Dan Hedberg, Greece Chamber Interim CEO/ President, Monroe County
Executive Maggie Brooks and Bill Vallee, owner of BillVallee.com
We’ve got some great things happen-ing in Monroe County!
It is easy to understand why Rochester was deemed a city “Poised for Greatness” in 2012, named one of America’s Best Cities for Families in 2012 by Kiplinger Magazine, regard-ed as America’s 10th Smartest Com-munity, 13th Most Innovative Com-munity in the U.S. in 2013, Friendliest City in N.Y. for Small Business Own-ers in 2014, and 2014 5th Easiest City Nationwide to Start a Business. We’ve got an innovative and highly skilled workforce combined with a dedicated business owners and a committed community all working together.
On September 18, 2014, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks was
the featured guest speaker at the Greece Chamber’s Eggs & Issues Leg-islative Breakfast. The County Execu-tive spoke about many economic de-velopment initiatives that have brought and are continuing to have a very positive impact on our commu-nity. She spoke about how our com-munity just a decade ago was still largely dependent on the big box manufacturers.
Today we see 367,000 jobs in our area that have been the result of com-mitted leaders, a strong business com-munity and highly-skilled workforce that joined together to create produc-tive strategies that led to identifying and targeting industries like optics, cont’ on page 4

healthcare, education, alternative energy, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, and food and beverage. Our economic development programs and initiatives have led to creating and retaining 100,000 jobs in our community since 2004. Right here in our own Greece Chamber of Commerce, we have 800+ creative and innovative entrepreneurs and small business owners. This month, the Small Business Council of Rochester will name a 2014 Business Person of the Year in two categories: 1) Small firms with fewer than 50 employees and 2) Large firms with 50 or more employees. These awards span over three decades, are given annually, and are based on growth, leadership, achievement and community service . The Greece
Chamber of Commerce sends out a congratulations to Greece Chamber Board Members Mike West, owner and founder of West Fire Systems, Inc. and Russ Herman, owner and founder of Pet$aver Super Healthy Pet Superstore. Mike and Russ are both finalists for this prestigious award in the category of “Small firms with fewer than 50 employees.” The winners will be announced at a special luncheon on October 15, 2014. The Chamber would also like to congratulate Wendy Cooper, founder and owner of Healthy Highway. Wendy, a retired Physical Education teacher, has created a fun program that assists in fighting childhood obesity, promotes healthy lifestyles and encourages and rewards young children to participate. Best of all, the program can be incorporated into an
entire school curriculum. The program is now being used in approximately 25 local schools as well as other schools across the country. Wendy just returned from the 9th Annual Healthy Schools Leader’s Summit. This forum is sponsored by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, started by former President Bill Clinton. Healthy Highway was one of only 10 businesses asked to be a participating sponsor at this prestigious event. So there you have it, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks explains why our local business community excels and we are seeing proof of it right within our own Greece Chamber of Commerce membership! –Terry L. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) is gearing up to teach high school students the ropes when it comes to starting and running
their very own legal and real businesses. The program is in the thick of student
recruitment for YEA classes starting this fall. The YEA program has been a success for students all across the country. YEA teaches students how to pursue their passions, and
gives them the tools to start their own business ventures and social movements.
For more information on how to nominate a student, contact Paula at the Greece Chamber
of Commerce 227-7272 or [email protected]. We are also
looking for Chamber members that would be interested in mentoring these students for 7
weeks. Please let Paula know if you are interested in being a mentor.
