Conditions of Entry

Age: The minimum age for entry is 18 years old with no upper age limit (The minimum age for ‘Role Actors’ and ‘Wildlife Support’ volunteers is 16 years old with no upper age limit).

Health: You must be physically and psychologically capable of effectively undertaking the tasks you may be asked to do.

Education: Formal academic qualifications are not essential but all applicants need to demonstrate that they have appropriate skills and abilities to perform the role of a Police Support Volunteer.

Nationality & Residency: You must be a British citizen or a member of the EU. Commonwealth citizens and foreign nationals are also eligible but only if they are resident in the UK free of restrictions and can provide proof of this. You must have been resident in the UK for a period of 3 years prior to applying.

Character: Only persons of good character will be accepted as you must respect and uphold the law. If you have been convicted or cautioned for any offence you may still be eligible for the role depending on the nature and circumstances of the offence. However, failure to disclose details will result in you not being able to become a Police Support Volunteer. If you are convicted or cautioned for any offence after the date you completed this form you must disclose the relevant details immediately.

Conflict of Interest/ Non-Eligibility:

Applications will not be accepted from individuals where there is a significant possibility that this could lead to a conflict of interest in your professional life or another voluntary role. You must therefore give full details of your current employment or other voluntary work you do as part of your application. Please refer to the list below for guidance.

Other roles you carry out may bring a conflict of interest. You must give full details of your employment or any other voluntary work; if we consider there will be a conflict of interest we will not be able to progress your application.

Vetting Procedures: Police Support Volunteers are subject to the Data Protection Act, Misuse of Computers, Official Secrets Act and ACPO National Vetting Policy 2012. It is important that the reliability and integrity of individuals is maintained and for this reason you, your family and others who live at your address may be subject to the appropriate vetting process.

BNP: The Police Service has a policy of prohibiting any of their staff or volunteers from becoming members of the BNP or similar organisations whose aims, objectives or pronouncements may contradict our duty to promote race equality. If you are, or have been, a member of the BNP or similar, your application may be rejected.

Tattoos & Piercings: Some tattoos are unacceptable, for example if they cause offence to members of the public or colleagues and/or invite provocation, or are considered to be rude, lewd, crude, racist, sexist, sectarian, homophobic, violent or intimidating. Other tattoos and piercings are not necessarily a bar to appointment although they may affect which roles you can fulfil if they could offend others or bring discredit to the Police Service. The Chief Constable will wish to undertake suitability checks on any persons having access to police premises and/or acting on his behalf and reserves the right to decline any person considered unsuitable without giving reasons for the decision.

Your application to be a Police Support Volunteer will cause background checks to be carried out to ensure your suitability for this role. These will include Counter Terrorism Checks, Criminal Record checks and checks of other Police held databases. Also all force positions are subject to random drug testing.
