In addition, Year 8 were excellent company during their activity week last week, with many of the people we encountered along the way commenting on their impeccable manners and saying that they were a credit to the school. We enjoyed a couple of PHSoc events at the end of last week. The author, Rachel Hickman, launched her novel One Silver Summer at Polwhele on Fri- day afternoon with many children leaving with signed copies. Our thanks to Rachel and her team for coming to visit, and the Chair of the PHSoc, Nata- sha Haslam-Hopwood, for helping to organise this event. The PHSoc Summer Fête (full report next week) all came together wonderful- ly in the end with something for all the family: pony rides, hook a duck, a bouncy castle, hobby horse making, Mrs Knight Bennett’s band, tombola, the RNLI, face painting, plenty to eat and drink, and games (some of which in- volved water!). Thank you to Miss Galaxy UK 2017 for opening the fête and to Sandy Thomson and her large team of helpers for pooling resources and putting on a lovely event. We look forward to more events of this nature in the future as they help to showcase the very special community feel at Pol- whele. Thank you to those parents who completed the questionnaire which was sent out before half term. The results have been overwhelmingly positive with one or two helpful suggestions for the future which we will take on board. Pupils at Polwhele House achieved 1 silver and 2 bronzes in this year's UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Over 250,000 pupils from across the UK sat the Junior Maths Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiv-ing a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze.

Congratulations go to William Piccin-White, who achieved Silver and Arthur Trotman and Timothy Rob-erts, who both achieved Bronze. Harry Alford and Patrick Luke also received certificates for best score in their year group.

The Junior Maths Challenge is run by the UK mathematics Trust and supported by the Institute and Facul-ty of Actuaries. It is aimed at those children in Years 7 & 8 and is sat in schools. Well done to all of the chil-dren who entered. It was a tricky challenge.

YEAR 2— FISH, TIN & CHINA CLAY TOPIC

Year 2 have been continuing to enjoy their learning in their topic ‘Fish, Tin and China

Clay’ by researching the life and work of Barbara Hepworth.

After reading some information about her we watched a video about her work. The chil-

dren made some fantastic, quick sketches of her awe-inspiring sculptures. We talked

about the ideas behind her abstract pieces and how her work changed to become more

evocative and less realistic. The children talked about their favourite sculpture and jus-

tified their ideas. Some of us liked her tall bronze sculptures that stood like giants and

some of us preferred her wooden sculptures which had wires in them representing ele-

ments of the sea.

We used all the ideas and elements we had noted and discussed to inspire our own de-

signs for a sculpture in Hepworth’s style. After drawing out our own designs we got to

the exciting part…cutting into a white bar of soap to make a three dimensional piece of

art. We thought carefully about shaping the soap with our knife and about the form

and shape of our envisioned final sculpture. We had a wonderful time working with the

soap and you could hear a pin drop when we were carefully carving. Do you like our

finished sculptures? What do they remind you of?

PREP SCHOOL

Prep School Den Day

Polwhele took part in this year’s Save the Children Den Day and raised (with gift aid) an

amazing £964.53! Many thanks to all who sponsored our pupils to build shelters

and raise money for this charity.

We took the opportunity to build our dens in the school’s woodland area with the expert

help of Colour Sergeant Richard Bennett of 6 Rifles, who during his 22 years in the regular

army, was as a survival skills instructor. He continues to teach survival and bushcraft skills

in the Reserves and with local company Footsteps of Discovery.

The children were taught the basic skills of building a shelter with an A-frame and how to

insulate it with fern and leaves before splitting off into small groups. Everyone managed to

build very sturdy shelters, although not everyone had enough time to complete their

dens. Fergus and Lila, Y5, particularly enjoyed scavenging for natural materials to build their

dens and Ethan, Y5, really liked spending time having fun with his friends. What everyone

has agreed on is that they all want to return to their dens to continue working on them

and even spending the night in one too! Mrs Knight-Bennett

Storytelling at Polwhele

We like to explore stories and storytelling here at Polwhele so with the beautiful

weather upon us Miss Topsey decided to get her classes to plan in new and exciting

ways.

Year 3 ventured into the woods where

Miss Topsey cast a magic spell to

make them very tiny. They used their

imaginations moving their miniature

selves around the environment think-

ing of all the adventures they could

have. This exercise encouraged the

children to describe their surround-

ings with greater detail, think creative-

ly and offered a whole new perspec-

tive of their woodland classroom. Next Year 3 will invent plots for their

stories and plan them carefully before writing.

Year 4 took their story planning to the playground

where they worked in pairs to invent characters for

their stories BUT instead of draw-

ing these on paper they drew them

on the playground using chalk. Af-

ter creating a character each they

went on to draw their chosen story

settings. They had so much fun and

will now take these plans back into

the classroom where they will make

puppets and story tell before

eventually writing their wonderful stories.

Years 5/6 trip to FootballGolf and Charlestown

by Bertie Tillyard

On Thursday 15th June, Years 5 and 6 accompanied by Mr Main, Mrs Hounsell and Madame Fergus set off

to Cornwall Football Golf in St Austell.

When we arrived, we were split into four groups, we then raced off to choose balls and were then explained

the rules. We were there with another school so we started ahead of them at course eight. On each course,

between us and the hole there were some obstacles

that you either had to kick the ball under, over, to

the side, through or around.

After a few courses we could all agree that we were

rather thirsty but before we could have a break, Josh and George decided to go swimming as they had kicked

their ball into a near-by pond!

After we were refreshed we went back to catch up, starting again at course one. Digby was the winner of all

groups as he completed the course with 81 points.

After the Football Golf we went down to the beach in Charlestown, where we had lunch and enjoyed ice

creams and playing on the sand.

It was a good day in the sunshine, we all had a great

time!

Year 8 Activity Week Last week Year 8 enjoyed their post-CE treat: the Year 8 Activity Week. As part of this they enjoyed an activity day at BF Adventure, a coastal walk from Crantock to Perranporth and a three-day camping trip at Mother Ivey’s Bay, which included some cycling, surfing and go-karting. Thanks to Kathryn Nicholas (Jago and Leo’s mummy), one of the highlights of this year’s trip was a visit to Padstow Lifeboat Station. On arrival we were greeted by the Chairman, John Stephens (Jago and Leo’s grandpa), who explained how everything worked and we enjoyed see the boat launched for a training exer-cise from inside the station. It will be a week that the children remember forever, and my thanks go to all those who have contributed to its success, including Mrs Lusty, Mr Main and Mrs Hounsell. I think the photos tell the story. Mr McCullough

U8 & U9 Cricket v Truro Prep

On 13th June the U9s had a wonderful match against Truro Prep. The weather was very

sunny and we all had a great time playing particularly Yas-

min who played extremely well and hit some great points

for our team. The grand final score was a whopping 248

runs to Polwhele and 306 to Truro. Truro had some great

bowlers on their side but although their best bowler had

hurt his leg he was still there to play for them. Our batting

shone through and we had some great runs from Jacob,

Finn, Jack and Delfino. We’ll be working on our bowling for

our next match. Well done everyone. Our men of the

match are Yasmin and also Edward for his great effort.

CLUBS NEWS

GARDENING CLUB:

Thank you to Claire White for this lovely picture of Poppy and Harry, enjoying the fruits of

their labours!

EQUESTRIAN NEWS

We had some very changeable weather last week prior to the hot sunny spell, and one windy and stormy

night, a huge branch of a beech tree broke off and fell into the paddock! Thankfully the ponies were

tucked up safely in their stables that night. Here are some of the Scholars checking out the fallen trunk!

L-R Yasmin, Hannah, Emily, Nerayah & Harry !

We were also delighted to help launch the lovely

children's book One Silver Summer by Rachel Hick-

man.

Our Scholars took part in a photo-shoot to publi-

cise the book, prior to book signings and sale, and

although all of the ponies were present, there was

one very definite star of the show - Arnold!

He was very photogenic and Rachel's favourite new

equine friend!

Lots of pupils purchased this lovely book, and will

no doubt be able to share the highlights of the story

with us all this week.

As the week progressed and the weather became

even hotter, the woods were definitely a favourite

place for the ponies to keep cool. Here are Katia

and George enjoying a lovely cool woodland hack

with Bruce and Polly.

Zack took Missy out for a canter

around the edge of the playing fields.

We like the ponies to enjoy a variety

of work as this is what helps to keep

them happy and sweet for our novice

children to ride.

The weather was absolutely per-

fect for our Summer Fete on Sat-

urday afternoon, and ponies fea-tured heavily, with the very popu-

lar pony rides, and also the Show-

jumping Hobby Horse Competi-

tion. Pictured here are all the jun-

ior showjumpers! We are already

looking forward to next year.
