FROM THE EDITOR

WELCOME Welcome to the December Pony Club NSW Newsletter It has been such a fantastic year for Pony Club in 2016. This year we introduced a new format for our State Championships, having combined disciplines over two week-long events in Quirindi and Camden. The Combined Championships were a big success with increased entries in many disciplines, and a big surge in media engagement and coverage. We have seen incredible performance from our riders at the many State events and schools held throughout the year, as well as the efforts of the NSW Team at the Pony Club Australia Prince Phillip Mounted Games Championships in WA. On behalf of the Pony Club Association of NSW, thank you to every one of our members for continuing to support Pony Club NSW and providing such a fantas-tic sporting environment for our 13,000 members throughout 2016. We have so much to look forward to in the new year, with another series of combined State Champion-ships, as well as the PCA National Championships be-ing held in Toowoomba, QLD. The 2017 Annual State Camp is the first State Pony Club event, being held from the 8th-13th January.

Applications have been received and we have a fan-tastic group of riders set to receive instruction from our great coaches. We wish our State Camp riders all the best and would like to thank the State Executive Committee for giving up their time to run the State Camp. Canberra Royal Pony Club event entries have now closed and Sydney Royal entries will close on 6th Jan-uary 2017. We look forward to watching many of our Pony Club Riders representing NSW and will have re-sults and photos released as they happen through social media and the state newsletter. The schedule for the first of our Championships in 2017 has been released on the association’s website, with entries closing on the 24th February 2017 for all Sporting, Campdraft, Team Penning and Polocrosse nominations. Enjoy this edition of the State Newsletter and don’t forget to send through results, photos, reports and stories from your Pony Club’s events & rally days for our Around the Grounds segment in the next March 2017 Issue.

News Stories— 2017 State Camp

Applications Soar for 2017 Pony Club State Camp

The Annual Pony Club NSW State Camp is less than one month away and successful riders have now been an-nounced. With only 70 positions available, over 120 applica-tions were received for the Camp being held from the 8th – 13th January at The Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

The NSW Pony Club Executive Committee had the

difficult task of selecting riders based on their recent perfor-mances, attendance and ambassadorship of Pony Club. All 70 positions were filled, with a very high standard of riders applying. A full list of selected riders can be found on the next page, or on the Pony Club NSW website.

The selected young equestrians are aged between

14 to 25 years and will enjoy four days of instruction to im-prove their skills in Dressage, Showjumping, Eventing, Mounted Games and Advanced Horsemanship. The State Camp provides coaching from some of the country’s highest qualified equestrian instructors in their chosen discipline.

This year the State Camp will host Peter Shaw as the Dressage coach, Jamie Coman as the Show-

jumping coach, Sam Lyle as the Eventing coach, Jane Frankum and Sarah Venamore as the Advanced Horsemanship coaches and Anthony Newman as the Mounted Games coach.

The Riders will be responsible for taking excellent care for their horse during the camp, in what is usually a very warm summer week. The riders will also get to know each other by taking part in the annual State Camp Volleyball Tournament, Trivia night, and other fun social activities.

The Pony Club NSW Executive Committee look forward to hosting the young talented riders and wish them all the best in their preparations for the Camp. The Pony Club NSW State Camp is supported by Horseland, Mitavite official feed partner, Club Colours Direct, Interna-tional Animal Health, Ego Pharmaceuticals and Australia’s HorseWyse Magazine. To find a Pony Club near you visit the state website on www.pcansw.org.au

70 riders will attend the 2017 Pony Club NSW

State Camp from the 8th-13th January at the Syd-

ney International Equestrian Centre.

Riders will receive instruction from some of Aus-

tralia’s top coaches in Dressage, Showjumping,

Eventing, Mounted Games and Advanced Horse-

manship.

Berrima District Pony Club Tulip Time Gymkhana

The last event for 2016 on the Zone 10 calendar was the Berrima District PC Tulip Time Gymkhana on Sunday 27 November. With just under 100 riders it was a huge day. Riders from all over the Zone came in droves with the first horse floats arriving at 6.30am. The classes were big especially in the 11 and under 13 years (25 riders) and the 13 and under 15 years (20 riders). Ribbons were hard to get but that didn’t disappoint anyone – smiles were beaming all day long.

Champion Pony Club Mounts in the 3 rings went to Bamborough Sabrina ridden by Al-exandra Berle (Berrima), Stormy ridden by Luci McManus (Berrima) and Runaroo Abra-cadabra ridden by Tarnee Scriven (Loopline). Champion / Reserve Champion riders went to Olivia Carter (Cobbitty) / Jack Rae (Cobbitty) - under 11 years, Brielle Powell (Loopline) / Amirah Harvey (Berrima) - 11 and under 15 years and Alana Richards (Loopline) / Amelia O’Sullivan (Berrima) - 15 and under 25 years.

The show jumping and sporting arenas were very competitive with very little sepa-rating the places. The Conan Memorial Trophy is given each year to the fastest barrel race time and this year it went to Sam Thompson (Berrima) with a time of 18.6 sec-onds. This year we had six very generous sponsors who donated beautiful woollen rugs for the Age Champions. The results were:

Under 9 years – Henrietta Hayman (Berrima) – Tudor House 9 and under 11 years – Abbey Holcombe (Berrima) – Widden Stud 11 and under 13 years – Sam Thompson (Berrima) – Matthew Smith Racing 13 and under 15 years – Brielle Powell (Loopline) – Baskerville & Brown 15 and under 17 years – Tarnee Scriven (Loopline) – Nature’s Botantical Associates – Alana Richards (Loopline) – Ms Fix

To top it all off was Lavender Equestrian’s “Pavlova Memorial Trophy” for the Cham-pion of Champions – awarded to the combination with the highest overall points of the day. This was won by Runaroo Tomcat, ridden by Brielle Powell (Loopline).

Low-Glycemic Feeding: Is This the Answer to Behavioural, Metabolic

and Growth Disorders? Glycemic index: You’ve probably heard this terminology at some point or another. The “buzz phrase” has been circulating among in-formed horse owners for several years now, but what is glycemic in-dex (GI), and why is it important in eq-uine nutrition? GI is a system used to rank carbohy-drates based on their effect on blood glucose levels. Though originally developed for humans, the system has been modified and proven reliable for horses. The reason glycemic response is re-ceiving so much interest from scien-tists is the observation of a marked increase in certain metabolic diseas-es and growth disorders occurring in horses over recent years. This influx has focused attention on the chang-es in the way we feed and keep horses in the modern day. What’s the big deal about glycemic response? A strong relationship has been found between glycemic response of feeds and certain health and behavioral issues in horses. Condi-tions that are potentially the most debilitating for the horse, and more often than not are commonly influ-enced and even managed by diet, include: Laminitis Subclinical acidosis Cushing’s syndrome Metabolic disease Osteochondritis dissecans

(OCD) Insulin resistance Tying-up (RER and PSSM Obesity

So what influences glycemic re-sponse and how does it affect the horse? Glycemic response to feeding is di-rectly affected by the ease and speed of digestion of NSC (nonstructural carbohydrates; namely starches and sugars) in the small intestine. Starch is a particular type of NSC found predominantly in grains, but also in much less concen-trated supply in forages, and is par-ticularly important as it makes up the major portion of NSC consumed by horses. All feedstuffs for horses contain some level of starch, with the exception of oil. When fed to horses, starch is gener-ally broken down in the small intes-tine to the simple sugar glucose. When the enzyme amylase acts on starch in the small intestine, the re-sulting glucose is released straight into the bloodstream where it can be observed as a rise in the level of blood glucose. Starch is a very natural and neces-sary part of the horse’s diet; howev-er, its use in modern horse diets must be carefully managed and con-trolled in order to avoid common problems that are directly linked to overconsumption. Excessive con-sumption of readily digestible NSCs in a single meal, such as a horse giv-en access to lush pasture or a horse that breaks into the feed room, can lead to one or both of the following outcomes: (1) A sudden and large change in blood sugar levels as large amounts of glucose enter the blood-stream from the small intestine, and (2) the small intestine becomes overwhelmed and there is not enough amylase available or enough time for digestion as food quickly passes through the intestine and overflows into the large intestine.

Once in the large intestine, starch is digested by sugar- loving microbes, and this disrupts the microbial bal-ance and leads to a change in pH balance of the hindgut. This chain of events is instrumental in many neg-ative outcomes for the horse, in-cluding hindgut acidosis, colic and laminitis. Cereal grains and sugar products such as molasses contain the high-est amounts of NSC and thus have the greatest influence on blood glu-cose levels in the horse. However, all carbohydrates are not created equal and some types of NSC are broken down more easily and more quickly than others. Energy is derived from other sources, not just starch. How can horses get the energy they need for work without the risks as-sociated with grain? Let’s not cast grain as the bad guy, as grain is use-ful for the vast majority of horses and will always be one of the best sources of supplementary energy for horses in any amount of signifi-cant work. Forage and readily digested fibre sources (known as super-fibres and include feedstuffs such as soy hulls and beet pulp) are very different from grains in that they are predom-inantly made up of complex struc-tural carbohydrates or SC (including cellulose and hemicellulose and lig-nin), which resist being broken down by amylase in the small intes-tine and instead continue on to the large intestine.

Whilst some simple sugars found in forage are digested in the small in-testine, the majority of SC are mi-crobially fermented in the large in-testine to produce volatile fatty ac-ids (VFA), which are used as an en-ergy source by the horse. Horses are also able to use fat as an energy source, and the popularity of high fat diets for horses has soared in recent years. Adding fat can significantly reduce the amount of grain fed and helps improve the energy density of the diet as oil contains three times as much ener-gy as grain. Adding oil to a grain al-so has the effect of reducing the glycemic response of the feed by

altering the rate of passage of the food through the stomach. Designing low-glycemic diets invari-ably means increasing both the di-gestible fibre and fat portions of the diet and reducing grain and simple sugar sources. How do we assess the glycemic index of feeds? Very simply, carbohydrates that are broken down quickly and easily dur-ing digestion have the highest gly-cemic indices. On the opposite end of the spectrum, carbohydrates that break down slowly, those with more complex structures and bonds or those that are protected from

amylase by the tough outer coating of the grain or seed have the lowest glycemic indices. As a reference point, whole oats have a glycemic index of 100, and all other feedstuffs are calculated to have a score based on the difference in response compared to whole oats. Those with scores over 100 have a higher glycemic response and those with a score below 100 have a low-er glycemic response than whole oats. The table below lists some simple feeds and their GIs as determined by a number of research studies in this area:

How is this knowledge transferred to practical applications for every-day management? Glycemic index of feeds is also influ-enced by the time it takes for differ-ent types of food to pass through the small intestine. Hay and forage typically pass through more quickly than grain, so if forage is fed immediately after grain this can in-crease the passage rate of the grain and reduce the glycemic response as food is passed through too quick-ly for the enzymes in the small in-testine to digest them. Therefore, ideally we should feed the bulky forage portion of the

meal (hay or chaff); followed by the grain or concentrate proportion; followed by a constant slow trickle of feed, such as through grazing. Interestingly, adding oil to a grain meal will slow the passage of the meal through the stomach and in doing so reduce the glycemic re-sponse of the feed by delivering a slower trickle of feed to the small intestine for digestion. It is clear to see that glycemic response can be influenced by many factors and that management of horses at meal times can have a significant impact on the performance of a feed. How can we manage horses suffer-

ing certain metabolic conditions through low-glycemic feeding? Some horses fine with feeds of a higher GI, however, for those hors-es that are susceptible to the prob-lems mentioned earlier, supplying a low GI feed may help to prevent some problems or reduce their se-verity. When glucose levels rise above nor-mal resting levels, the body releases insulin. Insulin is a storage hormone that acts to either store excess glucose or direct it to where it is needed. The rise in blood glucose following a meal is mirrored with a rise in insulin.

Page 18: PONY CLUB ASSOCIATION OF NEW SOUTH WALES STATE … · 2016-12-16 · 3. FROM THE EDITOR . WELCOME . Welcome to the December Pony Club NSW Newsletter . It has been such a fantastic

18

It is suggested that consistently feeding horses a high-GI feed can cause horses to become insensitive to insulin (insulin resistant) so that the effects of insulin are dulled. This causes more insulin than usual to be released as the metabolic sys-tem tries to regain control of blood glucose levels. High levels of circu-lating insulin have recently been related to conditions such as oste-ochondritis and laminitis. As research continues in these are-as, the risks of high-glycemic diets will become clearer. Rations with a low glycemic index are becoming popular management tools for horses at risk of or diagnosed with metabolic conditions such as Cush-ing’s disease, equine metabolic syn-drome, recurrent exertional rhab-domyolysis, polysaccharide storage myopathy and osteochondritis dis-secans.

Behavioural problems and the ad-vantages of low-glycemic feeding Following a meal that is high in NSC, the horse’s blood glucose lev-el suddenly increases, followed by a sharp decrease as insulin is re-leased to stabilize the increasing blood glucose level and a sudden decline in energy is experienced. These sudden changes in blood glu-cose levels can have a significant effect on some horses, quite often leading to inconsistent behavioural patterns and hyperactivity. Main-taining these horses on a low-glycemic ration to take control of spikes in blood glucose can often assist in returning some sanity to their lives. Do I need to put my horse on a low-glycemic diet? Horses that should be considered for a low-glycemic diet include:

• Weanlings: suggested reduction in the risk of developmental ortho-pedic diseases • Broodmares: some suggest that mares with high levels of blood glu-cose and insulin can influence the susceptibility of their foals to devel-opmental orthopedic disease, so there is an argument for reducing these influences during pregnancy • Aged horses at risk of developing Cushing’s disease • Chronically overweight horses along with a weight reduction pro-gram to reduce risks of insulin resistance • Horses diagnosed with equine metabolic disease

• Horses suffering from recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis or poly-saccharide storage myopathy • Horses at risk of or suffering from chronic laminitis

Where can I get help formulating a low-GI ration? The KER team of qualified equine nutrition advisors area available to help you formulate the best ration for horse horse’s long-term health and performance. Please contact Kentucky Equine Research’s FREE Nutrition Consultation Service on 1800 772 198, email [email protected] or submit a diet analysis request through our website www.ker.com.
