Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Pope’s desk: 9th Sunday after Pentecost Pope Francis, Sunday, 24 March 2013
Jesus enters Jerusalem. The crowd of disciples accompanies
him in festive mood, their garments are stretched out before
him, there is talk of the miracles he has accomplished, and
loud praises are heard: “Blessed is the King who comes in the
name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the
highest!” (Lk 19:38).
Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air.
Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the
simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not
matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human
sufferings, he has shown the face of God’s mercy, and he has
bent down to heal body and soul.
This is Jesus. This is his heart which looks to all of us, to
our sicknesses, to our sins. The love of Jesus is great. And
thus he enters Jerusalem, with this love, and looks at us. It is a
beautiful scene, full of light - the light of the love of Jesus, the
love of his heart - of joy, of celebration. (…)
Jesus is God, but he lowered himself to walk with us. He is
our friend, our brother. He illumines our path here. And in this
way we have welcomed him today. And here the first word
that I wish to say to you: joy! Do not be men and women of
sadness: a Christian can never be sad! Never give way to
discouragement! Ours is not a joy born of having many
possessions, but from having encountered a Person: Jesus, in
our midst; it is born from knowing that with him we are never
alone, even at difficult moments, even when our life’s journey
comes up against problems and obstacles that seem
insurmountable, and there are so many of them!
And in this moment the enemy, the devil, comes, often
disguised as an angel, and slyly speaks his word to us. Do not
listen to him! Let us follow Jesus! We accompany, we follow
Jesus, but above all we know that he accompanies us and
carries us on his shoulders. This is our joy, this is the hope
that we must bring to this world. Please do not let yourselves
be robbed of hope! Do not let hope be stolen! The hope that
Jesus gives us. (…)
Let us ask the intercession of the Virgin Mary. She teaches
us the joy of meeting Christ, the love with which we must
look to the foot of the Cross, the enthusiasm of the young
heart with which we must follow him throughout our lives.
May it be so.

Weekly Feature: Power in Prayer - Sr. Mary Gabriel, SV
The YOUCAT says “Prayer is the great gate leading into
faith.” It is such an important topic that the Church has set
aside an entire section of the Catechism for it. In this talk,
Sister Mary Gabriel, SV discusses prayer, its importance, and
the power it has to change us. Speaking from experience, she
encourages all of us to re-dedicate ourselves to growing in
relationship with Christ through a prayerful life.
Thanks to all who came to welcome Michael and Christie
King last Monday. Michael is the President of a small Catholic
College located in Fort Worth, Texas, Ss. John Fisher & Thomas
More College. They also have online Junior College and High
School programs. It is truly a wonderful traditional Liberal Arts
College. Check it online at: www.fishermore.edu

August 9 - 11 K of C Barbeque : Birthright will once again
have a booth at the K of C Barbeque. Our bake sale has become
extremely popular & a wonderful support to Birthright so we are
asking again for each Catholic Church in Adams County to
participate by donating home-baked goods for the Bake Sale.
Nine churches have been divided into three teams to
provide baked items for each day of the three day event. Each
parish is asked to donate 10-15 baked items or batches of
cookies, etc. These can be brought to the K of C grounds during
your assigned day. For questions or to set up a pick up time
please call Patty at 217-440-8388. St. Rose is set for Friday,
August 9 together with St. Anthony and St. Peter. There is a sign
-up sheet in the vestibule.
In conjunction with the Bake Sale, Birthright will hold a
raffle for a handmade “Quilt” and a “Dining Out” Package. Each
person who bakes for the bake sale will have their name entered
into this raffle with our grateful thanks for your generosity. If
you bring your baked item to the K of C grounds you can fill out
your own raffle ticket. If you have your items picked up please
put your name, parish and phone number secured to your baked
item and we will make sure that your name is entered.
Birthright operates an office at 12th and Broadway in the
lower level of the Zanger and Associates building. In a non-
judgmental atmosphere Birthright assists young girls and women
who are struggling with unexpected or unwanted pregnancies see
their babies through to birth and beyond. Birthright operates
solely on donations and is solely staffed by volunteers. If you
have any questions about Birthright and its services please
contact Birthright director Patty Adam at 217-440-8388.
With our sincere thanks! Our loving God will always bless
us for our generosity. Patty Adam, Director
