“Por” and “para” can both be translated as “for”.

Pray for

• Gracias por ayudarme.• Thank you for helping me.

For the sake of/Do for

• Yo hago todo esto por ti.• I do all this for you (for your sake).

In exchange for

• Me dio una manzana por mi naranja.

• He gave me an apple (in exchange) for my orange.

Motive/cause• Saqué una F en el examen por no

estudiar.• I got an F on the test because I didn’t

study (because of not studying).

In place of/On behalf of
