The letter signed by Ross McGowan, Executive Director, Earth Resources Regulation advised that the RL 2013 has been granted for a period of eight years. Gelliondale Resources are wishing to facilitate the development of the Gelliondale Coal Project that will impact Gelliondale, Hedley and Welshpool and crosses from the Wellington Shire boundary to the South Gippsland Shire, also impacting on the Nooramunga National Marine Park, Gellions Run and the Ramsar listed Corner Inlet. Whilst this RL2013 does not give approval to mine, it does allow Gelliondale Resources to spend the next 8 years on planning for the development of a coalmine. It can be agreed that this flies in the face of Government diatribe regarding cutting greenhouse emissions and embracing renewable energy. Unfortunately for those farmers and land holders impacted by this decision, it places an 8 year embargo on their future plans, not to mention the tourism industry that this area now places a great deal of faith in for economic survival.

It was with quite a surprise that the Port Albert Progress Association received notification from the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources, that the submission forwarded in 2013 opposing Retention Licence Application 2013 (RL 2013) by Gelliondale Resources Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of Ignite Energy Resources Limited) was approved. Jack Daniels Fishing Story Kindly submitted by Trevor Klitzing I went fishing one morning but after a short time I ran out of prawns. Then I saw a redbelly black with a frog in his mouth.. Frogs are good barra bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite with a frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the problem was how to release the snake without getting bitten. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. It was that bloody snake with two more frogs!

Married Four Times Kindly submitted by Trevor Klitzing The local news station was interviewing an 80 year old lady, because she had just got married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80 and then about her new husband’s occupation. “He’s a funeral director,” she answered “Interesting” the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her early 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when she was in her 40’s, and a preacher when in her 60’s, and now in her 80’s a funeral director. Astonished, the interviewer looked at her and asked, “Why did you marry four men with such diverse careers?” She smiled and explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go!”

175th Anniversary Planning Planning is underway with regards to this event. The proposed dates remain as 13/14th & 20th/21st February 2016. Issues have been raised with regards to dredging of the channel and the proposed maritime memorial which all have been received positively thus far.

All interested persons wishing to come along to this are encouraged including anyone willing to stand for an executive or general member position. Enquiries can be made by way of email ([email protected]). The Hall is always open for hire and enquiries can be made to this same email. A booking officer would be a great addition to the currently existing Committee. The hall Committee are also looking for a leadlight designer to work with them for a 175th commemorative window. Any ideas as to who can be approached would be helpful.

Port Albert Market The Port Albert Market runs on the 4th Sunday of the month. Exceptions to these dates are when Port Albert Events are held. Port Albert Community Pick Up

The Progress Association is well aware that there is no public transport in the area, which makes it hard for local residents to get to Yarram and back. A grant application has recently been submitted to garner funds towards the purchase of a bus. In the meantime, an effort to address was proposed by way of a ‘Community Pick Up’ service. It is suggested that those needing to get into town wait outside the Port Albert Art Gallery. Anyone driving into town may be able to provide a lift to those waiting. There is no onus on drivers to return residents to Port Albert but anyone in Yarram needing a lift to Port Albert are encouraged to wait on the corner of the Coffee Palace which will be the pick up, drop off point. We will look forward to hearing feedback as to whether this works.

C95 AMENDMENT The Wellington Shire Council has prepared Amendment C95 to the Wellington Planning Scheme. The Amendment will be on public exhibition from Thursday June 25 to Monday July 27. The Amendment proposes to implement the recommendations of the Port Albert Planning Controls Review (June 2014) and the Port Albert Rural Residential Lifestyle Lot Review (December 2014). This amendment will focus on rezoning land surrounding Port Albert to provide rural lifestyle opportunities and correct a number of zoning anomalies. Proposed changes to the planning framework will focus on streamlining existing controls, reducing red tape and removing redundant provisions whilst strengthening support for tourism and economic growth in Port Albert. Inspecting the Amendment The Amendment documentation will be available to view from Thursday June 25 2015 and can be inspected, free of charge during office hours at the Wellington Shire Council service centres in Sale and Yarram as well as via Council’s website, www.wellington.vic.gov.au. Fact sheets containing detailed explanations of the proposed changes can also be accessed at these locations as well as the Port Albert General Store. Comments and feedback on Amendment C95 can be provided through a written submission or via the electronic form on Council’s website. All submissions must be received by close of business Monday 27 July 2015.Written submissions should be sent to:

ALLIES WIN

Much celebrating was heard from the Allies on the 6th June after their win against the undefeated Stony Creek. Nerves were shot as they beating them by a slim margin of 2 points! The Club’s comeback this year has been a very good one, with their first win occurring against Korrumburra-Bena Giants who finished in the top four last year. Winning against Stony Creek is their best win this year and no doubt for the last ten! Congratulations are offered to the Club and their tenacity to still remain. Meanwhile the Fourths, won back to back at the Stony Creek game, putting their Coach Benji Maher in a pretty happy mood. With the addition of some more Juniors to the Club he is confident that the Fourth kids find their mojo and their confidence as individuals and as a team.

Left: The Allies Fourths team had some fabulous team mates from Borroloola Robinson River AFL, NT help out for the Indigenous Round at Meeniyan on May 30th 2015

Port Albert Racecourse

No further progress has been made regarding the burn at the Port Albert Racecourse, which has been frustrating for many locals. It appears that the burn will be put off until the dryer seasons although no official word has been received from DEWLAP to date. The current committee has agreed to move into caretaker mode until October. For those interested in taking on any Committee positions, they are encouraged to contact Tamika Darragh at DEWLAP on 5172 2189.

Community Emergency Planning Meeting

Port Albert had its first meeting last week to formulate an emergency plan that will assist the Port Albert community to respond more effectively before, during and after an emergency. Identification of risks, resources and skills were identified and are now being put together by Joanne Kirkpatrick with assistance from other members. Once completed the Plan will be available for discussion.
