The uture should seea continued expansion

    o engineering activity

    at Tomago, which is

    regarded as a good

    site or these

    industries.

    Manuacturing is a major

    activity in Port Stephens

    and accounts or 17% o

    employment. Manuacturing

is ocused in metal products -

    mainly the aluminium smelter,

    machinery and equipment

    and abricated metal products

    and other manuacturing.

    Tomago has developed as

    a location or metals and

    engineering operations andsome associated logistics

    unctions with most o the

    larger manuacturers located

    at Tomago. In addition to

    the smelter, Tomago contains

    a large share o businesses

    producing abricated metal

    products, machinery and

    equipment and mineral

    products.

    In other parts o Port

    Stephens, manuacturers are

    mainly small light industrial

    operations located in the

    various industrial estates,

    with concentrations o

    manuacturing businesses

    in Salamander Bay and

    Williamtown.

    Much o the engineering

    capability is linked to

    the resources sector,

    manuacturing and servicing

    mining equipment, port

    equipment, transport

    equipment and construction

    products.

    Recent development activity

    at Tomago includes the

    expansion o Ampcontrol, the

    proposed Westrac operations

    and the development o new

    acilities or Sandvik. The

boom in the resources sectorhas seen major growth in

    a number o engineering

    companies, with associated

    growth in their employment

    numbers. Tomago

    Aluminiums Smelter remains

    the largest regional employer

    with around 1350 employees

    and contractors and is located

    on a 500 hectare site.

    Forgacs Shipyard at Tomago

    constructs both steel and

    aluminium hull vessels such as

    tugs, passenger crat and naval

    ships. Tomago has other sites

with access to the river which

makes it suitable or large boat

    building activity.

    Many manuacturingbusinesses service a local

    and regional market and

    are sustained by population

    growth, housing construction

and by business growth in the

    Lower Hunter Region. The

    major drivers o the sector

    are global demand or energy

and metals and the rate o

    growth in inrastructure

    development in Australia.

There are a number o supplier

    links through Port Stephens

    based engineering companies

that are suppliers to the coalmining industry.

    The uture should see a

    continued expansion o

    engineering activity at

    Tomago, which is regarded

as a good site or these

    industries.

    Business & Knowledge Based

    Services have increased with

    the growth in overall business

    activity at Williamtown and

    Future growth in this sector

will be driven by the projected

    population growth in Port

    Stephens and the broader

    region the expansion o

    industry at Tomago and

    Williamtown, and the

    attraction o larger service

    organisations (private and

    government) to locate in

    Raymond Terrace.

    Increasing the number o

    business and knowledge

based service jobs is a major

    economic development

    priority and Port Stephens has

    major potential or growth in

    this sector.

    The largest individual

    category is real estate agents,

    based in Nelson Bay and

    Raymond Terrace. This sector

    is signicant because as a

    holiday destination, there are

    substantial sales o holiday

    homes and leasing o rental

    properties.

    The area is also well

    represented by banks, legal

    and accounting services and

    a mix o small proessional

    services rms in Raymond

    Terrace, Nelson Bay, Tomago,
