In the weeks approaching graduation, each year Academic Divisions are invited to identify students that theywould like to recognize for Medals of Distinction in their respective discipline areas.

Each division chair works withthe faculty in his or her division to come to consensus on a graduating student or students who have been stand-outs in their division’s classes.

The process varies among the divisions and even from division chairto division chair within the same division. The principle is that the faculty in the disciplines within each division reach a consensus on a student or students who were outstanding.

The only requirements are that the student must be graduating and must hold a 3.5 or higher GPA.

PC Connection Registration

In April, the annual PC Connection registration event was a huge suc-cess. The staff worked over the two day event. We asked high school seniors to RSVP for the event, however, many students attended the event that did not RSVP. These students were not turned away. Everyone worked together to serve the very last student.

We assisted 447 students registering for both summer & fall during the event.

PC Connection was envisioned when the “I Can Afford College” campaign began it’s statewide

Financial Aid Awareness Initiative sponsored by the California Community Colleges. The campaign launched in 2004, shortly after the California community colleges increased their enrollment fees. The governor and the state legislature wanted to make sure Californians knew how to make college affordable, so they set aside money to create an awareness campaign about financial aid. Each year events are posted to the icanaffordcollege.com website and funds are requested from the State Chancellor’s Office. We use these funds for various events in-cluding PC Connection, College

and Financial Aid Night, Pirate-in-a-Day and Financial Aid Awareness Week. PC Connection has become a one stop workshop for student success in one convenient location for high school seniors and their parents to access important information and services. The event is a cam-pus-wide operation that allows stu-dents to visit with support services, staff, administrators and our faculty. Students meet with a counselor or advisor, complete an abbreviated educational plan, select and register for classes, apply for financial aid or check their application status and apply for EOPS. High School Seniors leave the event registered as Porterville College students.

Forever In Our Hearts - Grace Martinez

Grace (Gracie) Martinez, with 25 years of true service to Porterville College students and staff, has unexpectedly passed away. In addition to being a dedicated Library Technician, Grace was a devoted mother, grandmother, youngest sister, aunt, and friend.

Grace loved Porterville College and the Porterville College library. She was a PC alum who after receiving her BA returned to work in the library where she had discovered her own love of books and learning - and she wanted to pass that gift on to others. She always met students and staff approaching the library service counter with a smile and a “helping hand.” Students were fortunate that Grace was a “morning person” as she could be depended upon to open the Library at 7:00 a.m. year after year so those last minute papers could be printed or that

reserved book checked out before class. Gracie particularly liked checking books out to students, and every semester she got to know students who would return to the counter repeatedly for assistance or a word of encouragement.

Grace cared deeply about every aspect of our library. If she saw a problem, like a book cataloged with the wrong number or in the wrong place, she would fix the problem, even if it took time.

She often suggested to the college librarian book titles that students asked about or that she thought would be valuable additions to the collection. She showed her own love of learning by reading library books on a wide range of topics and continuing to take college classes in multiple disciplines.

Perhaps what we will remember most about Grace - and what so

many of us have appreciated over the years - will be the heartfelt relationships she developed and nurtured with college staff who worked in every capacity and every corner of campus. Gracie’s spirit and presence can never be replaced. Her name suited her perfectly - she brought grace into our library and into our lives.

Story by Ann Marie Wagstaff

“Farewell” (For Lorie Barker, at her retirement celebration)

I look at you, in your robe of experience, what you showed me - the time well spent.

My words are of history and mistakes.

My words are of the future and mistakes.

Each is the same. Each is always ignored.

Both history and future test one another.

I look at you, in a gown of reassurance; my word for you is to say thank you for the

wisdom you have shared with me.

Our paths were joined for our chosen time and together we grew stronger than we would have grown alone.

Now, you go beyond this place, a destination unknown: I thank you for the time well spent.

Veterans Recognition Dinner

Photo and Story by Maria Roman

The Porterville College student veterans had their third annual Veterans Recognition Dinner on Friday, May 5, 2017 in the Porterville College Cafeteria.

All the student veterans and their families were invited to celebrate the end of the year and recognize those who were graduating and who demonstrated scholastic excellence & outstanding leadership throughout the year.

New Veterans counselor Maria Roman gave the opening remarks and reflected on some of the most memorable moments of her first year in the Veterans Resource Center. Current Student Veterans Organization President Robert Cooksey led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the President’s Welcome from Dr. Rosa Carlson.

This year’s highly anticipated guest speaker was former veterans counselor Steve Schultz. Steve introduced himself to all the new students, and joked about his own college days at Chico State, which he remembered had been ranked as Playboy Magazine’s top party school. He went on to talk about how at the time, he never thought he would enlist in the Army. But after thinking back and remembering everything that he went through and learned, he was sure he would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Erin Cruz, Director Enrollment Services and Kailani Knutson, Dean of Instruction continued the evening by presenting the “Patriot Awards” to students being inducted into the SALUTE Honor Society who earned a GPA of 3.00 and higher. The inductees included: Neftali Bautista, Maria Beltran, Brian Butler, Steve Cha, David Esquivel, Juan Godoy, Scott Hinton, Randall Kirkham, Stephanie Ledesma, Francine Leyva, Trent Lindsey, Alexander Lopez, Jose Luna, Matthew McCallister, Asha Melson, Carl Mendez, Nelida Ortiz, Priscilla Pettit and John White. Cruz and Knutson also presented the Service and Community Support Award to Richard Osborne, a US Marine who served in Vietnam and a retired PC Anthropology instructor. He continues to be active in the VRC activities by currently serving on the VRC Advisory Committee and by being a coordinator

for the Operation Lend-A-Hand. He also has raised funds for the Veterans Memorial at PC. Tim Johnston, a veteran whose two children attend PC, was recognized for being a longtime supporter for the VRC by ensuring the veterans have plenty of water, snacks and soft drinks. Greg Meister, President of the Rotary Club of Porterville, was recognized for leading the fundraiser for construction of the Veterans Memorial at PC.

Maria Roman presented the Guts, Glory and Goat Awards. Trent Lindsay received the “Guts” award. He is an Army Veteran. He raised the most funds for the spaghetti dinner and sold the most bricks for the Veteran’s Memorial. He is always supporting his fellow comrades in the VRC. Edward Gallardo received the “Glory” Award. Ed is an ArmyVietnam Veteran and a member of the Springville VFW. He volunteers countless hours at the VRC serving a mentor to other young veterans. Shawn Flynn received the “Goat” Award for being the rowdiest of the veterans. His sense of humor keeps fellow comrades in check. Maria says we enjoy his company and make us all laugh.

Dr. Rosa Carlson was surprised with flowers and an award as “Commander in Chief” as being Porterville College President. She is always in support of the VRC and will retire in September. We wish she the best of luck; she will be missed.

Dr. Rosa Carlson and Steve Schultz recognized the graduating students and presented them with their SALUTE stoles and veteran ropes to wear on graduation. Theseincluded Francine Leyva, Carl Mendez and Ruben Ochoa. The graduate students who are dependents of veterans recognized were also Heidy Benitez, Stephanie Norton, Emilia Romero and Jacob Sandoval.

Maria Roman ended the night by thanking the PC staff who helped with the dinner and the PC Administrators who helped make the Veterans Resource Center possible. Finally, she gave a sincere and whole-heart-ed thank you to the veterans for their sacrifices and their commitment to their country and their fellow citizens.

Retiree Luncheon

On May 10, 2017, a luncheon was held in the Student Center for faculty retiring this year.

James Thompson started the program with honoring David Hensley, music professor. James did a great job of rendering David speechless (Yes, for those of you not in attendance; David said very little and I even saw him laugh at the video presentation developed for him). We all found out some VERY interesting things about David’s childhood that none of us knew about.

Ann Maria Wagstaff read a very touching poem Grace Martinez had written for Lorie Barker. Those of us at the luncheon can now name at LEAST six things about Lorie none of us knew. Ann Marie ended the presentation with a song written just for Lorie that truly depicted the person she has been on this campus. And then there was Muriel Josten, drama professor. As usual she was not at a loss for words. She is such an open book that no one found out anything new about Muriel. But we now know why if we ever saw a set of lost keys on this campus, it’s a sure bet they were Muriel’s. Never one to shy away from a micro-phone, Muriel reminded us all why we do what we do and why we love it. In times of uncertainty, you always tend to draw close to loved ones and family. That is what happened today. The PC family drew closer in honor, in respect,in sorrow over the recent loss of Grace Martinez.

Porterville College Stories Alyward James Johnson

Alyward graduated from Porterville

College in 1950.

After serving with the U.S. Army,

wounded in Korea, he spent almost two

years in Letterman Army Hospital, San

Francisco.

Upon returning to Porterville he was able

to enroll in Porterville College for two

classes that were necessary before he

could enroll at Fresno State College to

obtain his Teaching Credential.

Dean Basil Jamison and former Porterville

Principal Benjamin Greisemer were very

helpful with this. In one class he was the

only student, so he had to be well

prepared!

It was at P.C. that Alyward met his future

wife, Frances Bohannon. They were able

to celebrate their 60th Wedding

Anniversary together before his death on

May 15, 2011. Alyward taught in

Porterville schools for 30 years, and
