Assignment/Activity Title— Fourth Quarter Interdisciplinary Year—Freshman Skill—Writing, Research Portfolio Category— Critical Reasoning In my fourth quarter freshman year I was assigned to write an article on the Cuban missile crisis, a well-known event of the Cold War that had many Americans speculating the possibility of a nuclear war. When I was assigned by my groupers to write of the Cuban missile crisis I had close to no knowledge on the situation, all that I knew was that Cuba had missiles and the US was unhappy about that, it's fair to say that history is not my best subject. The assignment itself was to write a two page article about our subject, for most of my group this was an easy process, as they had written news articles in the past, for me however, this was my first time writing a news article. I put this assignment in critical reasoning because this was one of the first times that I had to write a news article, and research a topic that I was not familiar about. This project really illustrated my strengths and weaknesses because in the article it shows how I am not very good at this sort of serious writing, and also how I struggle with basic sentence structure in my writing. If I could redo this project I would have slowed down on my writing, and taken more time to make the sentences less choppy and more easily understandable. This project from my fourth quarter interdisciplinary is important to put into my portfolio because it shows how I am changing, and becoming a better writer throughout my first year in the CAP program. This assignment is also a good example of me stepping out of my comfort zone, and writing news articles, which I never thought I would end up doing. This project has helped me change as a student and make me more comfortable with different writing styles.
