1. The meeting of the leaders of North and South Korea in June 2000 has set the pace for the development of inter-Korean reconciliation, peaceful co-existence and eventual achievement of reunification of this divided peninsula. ☛ Delegates of the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business (KFSB), visited

North Korea in December 2000 and have recommended establishing a technical

support center and liaison office for SMEs in Pyongyang, in order to solve

problems in business and setting up an export-industrial complex exclusively

for small companies in the North. ☛ The Korean Venture Association also plans to establish a venture-only industrial

complex to boost exchanges and an exclusive communication networks and

fiber-optic cables.

☛ North Korea has adopted the settlement of accounts by hard currency.

☛ A team from the North’s trade and finance ministries went on a study visit

to the USA to discuss with American experts on how to rebuild the North’s

economy, boost foreign trade and join international banking facilities.

☛ In March 2001, heads of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Asia

Development Bank and the World Bank said that the two bodies will work

together to assist North Korea in its efforts to restructure the economy.

These international financial institutions are expected to be able to help North

Korea reestablish its economic institutions and assist in the fields of agriculture,

infrastructure and education.☛ In May 2001 the EU sent a high-powered delegation to Pyongyang in support of

the development process and expecting a better legal framework for business.

PYONGYANG – Right in the heart of “New Thinking”

A Historic City with a Modern Pulse:The city has many large public buildings that reflect the Korean

version of Socialist architecture. Among them are the Grand

Theatre, People’s Palace of Culture and the Tower of Juche Idea. You

can also find landmarks in the city such as the huge bronze statue of

a winged horse, and the Central Historical Museum. Several temples

dating to the seventh century have been rebuilt.

Pyongyang was completely rebuilt after the Korean War (1950-

53) and today it features wide avenues, neatly designed parks and

enormous marble public buildings. The gates of Pyongyang and the

Arch of Triumph are particularly impressive. Many ancient buildings

in Kaesong, a city near the frontier to South Korea, bear witness

to Korea’s 500-year imperial history. The place is surrounded by

beautiful pine-clad hills. Famous is the magnificence of Kumgangsan

(Diamond Mountain), the country’s largest national park, consisting

of a range of mountains along the eastern coast of the country.

Although still far from offering international cuisine for connoisseurs,

Pyongyang does have a range of well managed restaurants offering

Asian as well as Western foods.

A night at the opera provides a unique experience. There are also

circuses and musical events of a high quality.

As the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang is the

headquarters of the nation’s Workers Party as well as

its economic, educational and cultural center. Located

on the Taedong River in the northwestern part of the

country, Pyongyang is one of the oldest cities in Korea,

destroyed and rebuilt many times dating to 2993 BC,

when it was the site of an ancient capital.
