ONE COMMUNITY CHURCHFRISCO, TEXASTHIS BUILDING SERVES TWO FUNCTIONS, A CHURCH ON THE WEEKENDS AND A SCHOOL DURING THE WEEK. RENOVATION PLANS CALLED FOR MULTIPLE STAGES, THEREFORE PAINT REMAINED ON ALL WALLS AND ONLY FLOORING CHANGES WERE MADE TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH FUNCTIONS.

PIZZERIA TESTA FRISCO, TEXASLOCATED IN FRISCO’S TOWN SQUARE, THIS RESTAURANT IS ANYTHING BUT THE AMERICAN PIZZA CHAIN. THE CLIENT, HAVING A STRONG ITALIAN HERITAGE, DREAMED OF BRINGING ITALY TO THE STATES. FROM IMPORTED ITALIAN PIZZA OVENS TO BRICK WALLS, THIS DINING EXPERIENCE CAPTURES THE TRUE ITALIAN FLAVOR.

LAKEPOINTE CHURCHROCKWALL, TEXASTHIS CHURCH WAS UPDATED WITH A WARMER AND MORE INVITING INTERIOR. NATURAL LIGHTING NOW PENETRATES THE EXTERIOR PASSAGES. THE INTERIOR IS FILLED WITH A WELCOMING SENSE OF CONNECTION, CASUAL GROUP SEATING, A COFFEE SHOP, BOOKSTORE, AND A CENTERED SANCTUARY.

ETTORE SOTSASS, BOTTOM RIGHT OPPOSITE, INSPIRED THE DESIGN OF THIS TINY, 200 SQUARE FOOT SUSTAINABLE RESIDENCE. AS SOTSASS CHALLENGED THE SERIOUSNESS OF FUNCTIONAL OBJECTS, IT WAS CHALLENGING TO DESIGN FUNCTIONAL LIVING IN SUCH A SMALL SPACE.

Arguably the GODFATHER OF ITALIAN DESIGN, it was under the leadership of Ettore Sottsass that the anti-design movement was formed. After graduating architecture school in Milan and moving to Italy, Sottsass began to challenge FUNCTIONALISM, and explored an alternative taste to the functional designs of the period. In 1981, Sottsass and other design leaders founded the Memphis group which produced provocative materials and colorful conventional forms, poking fun at the “seriousness of functional objects”. The design movement became defined by neon veneers and wildly plastic laminates. ETTORE SOTTSASS REAFFIRMED THE IMPORTANCE BEHIND THE NEED FOR DESIGN

RECEPTION DESK DESIGNUNIVERSITY OF ARKANSASAN EXERCISE IN FURNITURE DESIGN, THIS RECEPTION DESK BROUGHT AN AWARENESS OF DESIGN BASED ON FUNCTION. THE RECEPTION DESK PROVIDES LOCKABLE STORAGE FOR SECURITY, A PARTIAL DESK HEIGHT FOR ACCESSIBILITY, AND AN AESTHETICALLY PLEASING COMBINATION OF WOOD, STAINLESS STEEL, AND GLASS.

THE PENTHOUSE SITS ATOP THE UNDERWOOD PLAZA IN FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS. HAVING MOVED FROM CHINA, THE KIM’S DESIRED A MODERN HOME WELCOMING OF THEIR FAMILY TRADITION. FOR EXAMPLE, THE DINING ROOM WAS PLACED IN THE CENTER OF THE HOME, AS EATING WAS A PRECIOUS TIME OF COMMUNITY.

AKBAR RESTAURANT UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSASTHE CONCEPT FOR THIS RESTAURANT WAS DERIVED FROM THE SPICE AMCHOOR, KNOWN AS GREEN MANGO POWDER. THE SPICE IS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE EARTHY COLOR PALETTE AND ORGANIC DESIGN ELEMENTS. THE WARM ATMOSPHERE IS COMPLEMENTED BY THE SAVORY KICK OF THE FLAVOR FOUND IN THE MENU.

KEEPING ALL STRUCTURAL WALLS, THE BUILDING WAS REDESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS WERE PRODUCED. SKETCH UP WAS INTRODUCED AS A TOOL FOR PRODUCING PERSPECTIVES.

AS MY FIRST HAND DRAWN, MULTI-FLOOR RESIDENCE, I WAS FACED WITH TWO SPECIFIC CHALLENGES: TO MAKE A NARROW SPACE BRIGHT/FUNCTIONAL AND TO DRAW STAIRS. WITH STAIRS PUSHED TO THE SIDE, I ACHIEVED A WELL LIT SPACE, CARRYING LIGHT FROM WINDOWS AT BOTH ENDS THROUGH AN OPEN CONCEPT STRUCTURE.
