A Concrete Imagination
A Selection of Concrete Experimentation
For over twenty years my secret hobby has to get my hands in the mud of cement, of sand and dirt and make something from what seemed nothing.

Imbedded into wet concrete slab makes a fossil.
“The idea of making my own fossils appealed to me but the results of seeing that life’s beauty captured inspired me to make tabletops, boxes, planters, sculptures, antiquities from today’s garden.” –– JM

From an invasive acanthus leaf into a concrete stepping stone -17 inches diameter.
I make use of those clear plastic dishes placed under potted plants as water catchers.
A path made with wet concrete filling small garbage bags tied with a knot. Each turned upside down and forced into one an-other like interlocking tongue and groove. The bags cured for four days, then the bags removed.
The path is to the grave of a beloved pet.
– 12 x 24 throat 6 inches –
Ferrous sulfate and green concrete stains vessels fashioned from tubes I got free from a carpet store.
Sealed to be waterproof painted twice with garage floor acrylic sealers.
Tall cases – acanthus leaf impressions
Birdbath inspired by a osprey nest across the canyon from me. Cinder block stand on concrete base, branches used to mimic a bird’s nest. Bath is watertight, the leaf pattern in the bath is from Hydrangea, in white with grey leaf veins.

Inspired by the story of St. Nemoise - (French Saint 1400s) - possible origin of Mother Goose – 25 X 16 X 2.5 inches thick.
Cast from the original in plaster. Open edition garden sculpture.

Stained with ferrous sulfate, a Garden Supply, produces a “rust” stain. Variations in color are by bathing the sculpture for longer periods of time.
ALSO IN GRAY AND WHITE, AT TIMES BLACK

On another path we mixed faux stones with real. The Quikrete took on the ferrous sulfide rust color as well as the stones. Four people working together for two-and-a half hours made this eighteen-foot -ong garden path. Each bag interlocked with its neighbor by tongue and groove. Garage floor acrylic sealer used twice.
A waist-tall garden sink is impressive, original, but a tad heavy.
