1929 Indian FourYes, that’s right, this is a running street bike. A local resident has owned this beauty for almost thirty years. Ed Johnson of Johnson Vintage Engineering has been elected as the “caretaker” and rides it every now and then to keep it mechanically “fluid.”

Ed is a one-man shop who creates and restores some of the most interesting two wheeled marvels you’re likely to see. Don’t let the “vintage” name mislead you. Ed also does a lot of race specials like upgrading TZ750s and putting modern “X” brand motors into light-weight “Y” brand road racing chassis.

But Ed has resisted the impulse to restore this wonderful machine. All mechanical workings and chassis items are factory original from 1929. However, a former owner had repainted it around 1970 in an unauthentic shade. When purchased, the bike had been on blocks for a few years and the motor was tight from surface rust but not seized. Ed disassembled, cleaned and polished the original components back to serviceable life.

“It takes a little special ritual to start,” Ed says, “but once going she purrs nicely. I’m pretty easy on her, I don’t wind her tight and I give myself plenty of stopping room. But she’s still a very satisfying ride which pleases me in ways a late model American V-twin or a modern muscle-bound four just can’t manage.”

“The seat’s comfortable, the handlebars give plenty of lever-age and the shifter eventually finds its way into the next gear, albeit with a looong throw. The floorboards vibrate a bit more than the handlebars, but the seat is isolated quite well. I wouldn’t try a hundred-mile-day on her. She’s a bit stubborn, but she’s a keeper. Norm Blore

How badly do you want a motorcycle? $72,000 worth?

DesmosediciDucatiMotoGP, the top class of motorcycle roadracing, replaced the 500cc two-stroke era with brand new technology-rich 990cc four-strokes in 2002*. These wonderful new machines immediately dominated the older bikes. Although they were a few pounds heavier, they were easier to ride, had more tire gripping torque characteristics, made wonderful sounds and promised a new class of streetbike...the MotoGP derivative. This is the first bike of that class. Over 200 hp from 377 pounds of rolling sculptural elegance made from exotic steel, carbon fiber, titanium, proprietary tires and gp spec electronics. An initial offering of only 400 at $65,000 were gone in a single day off the Ducati website. A decision was quickly made to increase the number to 1500 total and to increase the price to $72,500. They all sold. The first delivery took almost two years from date of deposit. This is the pinnacle of street-legal motorcycle development to date.

Here’s a few words from the anonymous owner of this incredible motorcycle.

I have always been an avid MOTOGP enthusiast glued to the technology as well as to the competition. When the series opened up to 4-stroke machines and Ducati entered the picture with the Desmosedici I became even more of a fan. (I have always been a Ducati enthusiast and have owned 10 different models over the past 12 years, starting with the 916 right after it was unveiled; and most recently a Ducati-powered NCR Millona R). When Frank told me a D16RR version was going to be built for the public, I gave him the verbal commitment on the spot without even thinking about it. The $5000 deposit came a few days later. Was it refundable? I’m sure Frank would have given it back if needed, but I go along with the rules of the game. I don’t have a lot of money, I just don’t spend it on much other than motorcycles and endurance roadracing.

At the time I was single so the purchase commitment didn’t have to becleared by anyone but myself. I had almost 2 years to figure out how to pay for it, so it seemed like no big deal...I’m a little crazy like that.

When the day came in March for delivery, Touring Sport Ducati put on an after-hours unveiling with 50 of their closest customers and friends.By the time the party began to wind down and everyone had gone over the bike looking at the details and trick bits, I finally was able to take it for a quick ride. To tell you the truth, just the sound of it was worth it. I was not really able to get a feel for anything else. It was getting dark and I didn’t want to go out and “rail” on the thing as the tires were new, cold and unscuffed.

I plan to bring the bike to a track day at Roebling Road in Savannah later this year to ride it like it was meant to be ridden-–all the way on it’s side, suspension compressed, then rolling-on of the loud handle and steering with the rear as I come off turn 12 onto that long front straight. I can’t wait to hear the 14,000 rpm howl bouncing off the pit walls. You really can’t get a bike like this to do what it was designed to do on the street and be smart about it. I suspect though that it won’t get ridden much, but that is what I always say...and then temptation makes me forget all those promises and away I go.

Will Ducati ever build more of these? I hope not for selfish reasons, but history shows that there is always something better out there yet to be built. When Ducati built the MH900e I bought one to collect because it was such a “design exercise” but Ducati later built the whole line of Sport Classics with a more rideable Paul Smart 1000LE. All of a sudden the MH was not so unusual...so I sold it. Vicious cycle, isn’t it (no pun intended).
