    Area

    Why the North region?

    The North has one of the largest land areas in mainland Portugal, with an international land borderof 568 km and a coastline of 142 km

    Area (km 2): 21,286 Inhab/Km 2: 175.8 Population (N.): 3,741,092 (2010)

    The North has good infrastructures: motorways, railways, ports and air transport systems

    2 Maritime Ports ( Viana do Castelo and Leixes )

    516.2 km of railway networkElectrified rail network: 397 km

    Double rail network: 119.2 km

    1 Airport - Porto city

    9 Aerodromes - Braga , Bragana , Maia , Mirandela , Mogadouro , Vila Real , Chaves , Espinho ,

    Macedo de Cavaleiros (Heliport)

    The North Region (NUT II) covers 8 Districts: Viana do Castelo, Bragana, Braga, Porto, Vila Real,and part of Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda districts. For statistical purposes this Region is divided into 8

    NUT III, with different characteristics:

    Alto Trs-os-Montes

    With a rich cultural heritage combined with other diversified and modern resources, the North region

    has a strong potential for tourism development

    Why the North region?

    Population

    36% of the youth population, in Portugal, is centred in the North region Resident Population on 31.12.2010: 3.7 million individuals (35% of total in 2010 and an 0.2%

    increase in 10 years) Projections for 2025: 3.913 million individuals

    In 2010, the North region recorded the fourth highest rate of natural increase in population, following

    Lisbon, Azores and Algarve

    Education

    In the school year 2010/2011, students enrolled in primary and secondary education accounted for36% of national total, in both levels of education

    Between the school year 2006/2007 and 2010/2011 the number of students enrolled in highereducation increased by 9%

    In the 101 higher education institutions, located in the North region, the number of students thatenrolled exceeded 123,000 and graduates were more than 27,000 (1/3 of the national total). The

    areas of Health, Engineering and Mathematics and Business Studies (Management / Economics /

    Accounting), were chosen, respectively, by 17%, 15% and 14 % of the enrolled students. Graduates

    in these same areas represented, respectively, 23%, 11.2% and 10.6% of total

    3% between 2007 and 2011) and where exports outside the EU represents nearly 20% of total

    exports

    The manufacturing industry is represented by almost 35 000 companies, which generate a turnoverexceeding 25 billion (36% of national turnover) and have approximately 370 000 employees. The

    most representative industries are the following: Food industry (10.2% of total Manufacturing

    Industry turnover), Clothing (9.4%), Metal industry (9.3%), Textiles (8.2%), Leather Goods (6.4%)

    Electronic equipment (5.9%) and Wood and Cork (5.8%)

    The North region concentrates the largest number of companies in the areas of Industry and Energy,Construction and Wholesale and Retail Trade. In 2010, Industry and Energy companies

    represented 46% of total

    The North region has 1,083 Research Institutions (R&D Centres) with international recognition Engineering, Technology and Social Sciences were the areas that most invested in R&D (about
