Introduction
• With the advent of the electronic resources the cooperationbetween libraries was reinforced with their association inconsortia:– to negotiate better contracts,– provide access to contents in a larger scale (Big Deal),– making the transition to digital information.
• This practice was especially developed between academiclibraries, since these Institutions are the ones with greaterusage of the available electronic contents.
• We intend to present and analyse some bibliometric indicatorsof the Portuguese Scientific Production seeking to associatethem with the emergence of the Portuguese consortium, b-on,in 2004.
ObjectivesThe objectives of this study are:
• determine the usage that universities teachers and researchersmake of the online scientific information offered by b-on;
• identify and characterize the scientific output of universitieslinking it with the increased usage of b-on’s resources;
• measure the level of relevance and the use of online sourcesand identify the scientific subject areas with major output.
In addition to the usage data of the consortium, we used the Webof Science (WoS) and Scopus from which we identified the articlesindexed with Portuguese affiliation and by five Portugueseuniversities between 2000-2010
Methods
• The evaluation and improvement of the research qualitycarried out at universities is one of the primary goals of theEuropean Higher Education and that contributed tobibliometry earning additional emphasis in recent years.
• The sources of information used to obtain quantitativeindicators were the bibliographic databases that collectinformation about the articles published in scientific journals.
• There are several databases with bibliometric indicators andevaluation of scientific literature, however, in this study weused WoS from Thomson Reuters and Scopus from Elsevier
Methods
• In methodological terms a survey of the number ofdownloads per b-on institution was made (we justconsidered the journals downloads). The data has beentaken from the statistical reports provided by b-on, whosedata were obtained from the COUNTER reports (JR1)provided by each content supplier.
Methods
• In terms of the use of resources b-on has been growing year byyear, reaching in 2010 almost 7 million of downloads.
• These figures show the importance of the electronic scientificresources for the national academic and scientific community
Methods• We have chosen as sample the five universities with more
downloads per FTE (full time equivalent):– University of Aveiro,– University of Porto,– University of Minho,– New University of Lisbon and– Technical University of Lisbon
• These universities have distinctive sizes, the University ofPorto is the largest Portuguese university, the University ofMinho, Nova de Lisboa and Técnica de Lisboa have mediumsizes and Aveiro is the smallest of the five institutions.
Results
• The number of articles with Portuguese affiliation hasgradually increased in recent years in both databases.
Results
• Regarding the five universities we found 30.437 articlesindexed in WoS and 29.768 in Scopus published in the yearsunder analysis.
• The affiliation of the authors shows that from the fiveinstitutions analysed it’s the University of Porto the one withmore articles indexed either in WoS or in Scopus

There’s a tendency for agreater increase in thenumber of articles indexedin Scopus.
Vieira and Gomes (2009)using the set of Portugueseuniversities compare bothdatabases. They concludethat Scopus provides 20%more coverage than WOS.
Results
• We calculated the ratio of production per 100 researchers andconfirm that the number of Portuguese articles has graduallyincreased over the years in both databases.

Conclusions
• As anticipated we confirmed that the type of institution withmore downloads are the universities.
• These institutions are also the ones with more articles indexedin the WoS and Scopus databases.
• We believe that the availability of electronic resourcescontributes to the higher productivity of universities.
