Location

Canberra

Position Duration

152 hours

Commencing June / July

Position Overview

The State of the Environment (SoE) section has responsibility for environmental reporting and

implements two key interrelated initiatives: the State of the Environment report and the Essential

Environmental Measures (EEM) for Australia program.

Major Tasks

As a multi-disciplined team our work relies on strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation

skills, data analysis and management skills, digital transformation skills (ie. improving SoE Digital),

problem solving and collaboration within the department and with partner organisations such as

CSIRO or NCRIS facility organisations.

Major Project for Placement

We have interesting discrete pieces of work to progress in the following areas—dependent upon

field of study and interest of the intern:

Option 1: Participation in user research in support of State of the Environment reporting and

environmental-economic accounts. Carrying out user interviews, reaching out to NGOs,

environmental groups and businesses to understand what they need from environmental reporting

to inform their decision making.

Level 3, 80 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW 2000 (02) 8270 9200 www.and.org.au

Option 2: Assistance with program redesign of the EEM program to implement required change

following a program evaluation, and to align with new initiatives such as environmental-economic

accounting.

Option 3: Assistance with Project Management planning for the delivery of the 2021 State of the

Environment Report, providing input to governance and contributing to designing an approach to

incorporate susainable develop goal (SDG) reporting and environmental-economic accounts into

the report.

Option 4: Assistance with developing data and technical solutions for the workings of EEM, SDG

indicators, environmental-economic accounts and SoE datasets and reporting. This may include

inforgraphic animations, data life-cycle management, data management, information flow design.

SoE runs as a collaborative team using agile and lean tools such as Kanban. We work in 4 to 6

week sprints to deliver outcomes required to improve environmental reporting. The team

collaboratively set priorities of activities with task deadlines set by the individuals to meet the

broader activity timelines. The intern will work as part of a small team within the section to deliver a

piece of work that they can own with regular access to colleagues and manager as required.

The section contributes to the Meeting of Environment Ministers (MEM) secretariat for direct policy

input to environmental outcomes through MEM and the inter-jurisdicational Environment Senior

Officials Group. This placement is a great opportunity to build networks and collaborate with

experts on making meaningful changes in the way the public value the environment’s contribution

to our quality of life. Flexible working arrangements can be accommodated, with consideration to

operational requirements, and we will work with you to design a placement that supports your

career objectives.
