CONSUMER CONNECT INITIATIVE Nafees Ahmad B ringing back the enthusiasm of cycling, around 100 cyclists took part in a cyclothon titled 'Pedal to Greenery' that took place on February 18 in Haldwani. The event aimed at creating awareness about staying fit as well as the importance of having pollu- tion-free environment. Organised by The Times of India, this activity was co- sponsored by Bike Station Haldwani, Bajrang Motors, Bajrang Sports, LSC Auto Wheels Pvt Ltd, Tanishq GN Pal and Sons, Sahas Homeo Clinic and Giant Cycles. The event was flagged off by Janmejay Khanduri, SSP, Nainital. The cyclothon start- ed from Rampur Road and culminated at the Nainital Road, covering a distance of 12 kms approximately. On the way, cyclists were greeted by sports enthusiasts and onlookers. Schools that par- ticipated in the event includ- ed Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, SKM School, Gurukul International School, St Theresa Sr Sec School, KVM Public School and Whitehall School. Sharing his views, Khanduri, said, "Nowadays, hectic work schedules leave hardly anytime to take care of one’s health. If we include activities like cycling in our daily routine, then we don't have to put in extra effort. Also, cycling is an eco- friendly means of transporta- tion, which is an added advantage." Automated lifestyle aimed at easing people’s life, per- haps has resulted in less physical activity. Speaking about the benefits of cycling, Dr Naveen Chandra Pandey, owner, Sahas Homeo Clinic said, "Cycling helps in attain- ing cardiovascular fitness, IN AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE AWARENESS ABOUT LEADING A HEALTHY LIFE, STAYING FIT AND KEEPING THE ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION- FREE, THE TIMES OF INDIA ORGANISED A CYCLE RALLY TITLED 'PEDAL TO GREENERY' muscle strength and flexibility. It is also helpful in improving joint mobility and decreasing body fat level.” Sanjay Agarwal, managing director, Bajrang Motors and Suneel Agarwal, managing director, Bajrang Sports, said, “Though there are many state- of-the-art fitness centers mushrooming across the city, yet cycling is one of the exer- cises that makes workout a fun process. The best part about cycling is that people do not realise that they are actu- ally exercising.” The cyclothon saw massive participation. Sanjay Papnai, a retired teacher who enjoyed the early morning spectacle, says, “Cycling has become a style statement today. Markets are flooded with branded and high- end bikes." Participants pre- pared in advance for this cyclothon. It was neither a race nor a compe- tition of sorts. All the participants gathered to create awareness about keeping fit and healthy as well as keeping environment pollution-free. Sharing their views, Abhishek Agarwal, director, LSC Auto Wheels Pvt Ltd and Gopal Pal, director Tanishq GN PAL and Sons, said, "Most of us know about the negative impact of pollution on envi- ronment. However, what most of us don’t know is that to bring about a change, one needs to make a smart choice in terms of personal mode of transportation, which is opt- ing for cycling.” To this, Raghubir Kalakoti, director, Bike Station Haldwani, added, "The purpose of this event was to make people aware about the ills of pollution created by vehicles, and to opt for cycling.” Such events help in bring- ing pivotal issues to the fore- front, making people realise what they are doing to their environment and their health. Tanishq Pal, a tenth grade student who partici- pated in the cyclothon, said, "The rising level of pollution in metros has forced people to stay most- ly indoors. During the win- ter season, they are liter- ally prisoners in their own homes. We don't want this to happen in our hills. Thus, such activities will prove to be beneficial in times ahead.” Anant Ericson and Rajesh Negi, participants from the Whitehall School’s cycling team, say, "People are paying less attention to their health and the pollution is hitting us like never before. This cyclothon helped in put- ting across this senti- ment.” Joint efforts, no matter how small they are, can make a huge difference.
