Page 1: Poster analysis 2 insidious

The protagonist of the film is a male character in a medium shot in the central of the poster, indicating the power and importance the character has. His left eye has been ‘possessed’ as it possess numerical figures indicating to the audience that the protagonist’s family have until a certain amount of time also that he is under some sort of control. Whereas the right eye contains the normality suggesting to that the evil is within him. This suggests to the audience that the boy is in a trance trapped under the evil spirit/demon’s control. The protagonists appear to have a darker face with sharper features on point, alongside an expressionless facial reaction. The direct eye contact with audience draws the person in. However the male character appears to look lifeless, with no colour on his face and his behaviour unlike a child, indicates to the audience that death and the beyond signify importance in the film. The use of such a young male child on a horror post is unconventional as it’s seen that female children crop up more often. Children are usually connoted with such innocence and vulnerability. Nevertheless this character’s face and the dull colours surrounding him indicate the innocence has vanished! The vibrancy of the rest of the poster compared to the rest of the props within the poster indicate the child has power over the house and possible a dark side of him that has a supernatural essence following where he goes. The main character takes up the majority of the film thus highlighting his significance within the film also suggesting the film will revolve around this character.

The house in the background represents a typical American family home. The semi detached family home may suggest the child having been possessed by the evil yet still alive within. With a light over the house it suggests the control of the character over his family. The storm that appears to be occurring indicates this family will go through a lot during the film. Two different asymmetric patterns that occur on the house window panes suggest the goodness and evil that lurks within. The dark blue, grey and green shades, suggests mysteriousness and are conventional colours of horror films.

‘From the makers of’, draws in the target audience of the pervious horror films that are stated almost as a guarantee that the film will be just as terrifying as the ones previously mentioned. The bold writing where the website and release date are the only institutional information to stand out, this is because these are what the audience essentially need to know. The website allows an interactive form of communicating to the audience. The fact that the rest of the institutional information is not as clear emphasise that it’s not needed. The tagline is positioned in unconventional form. There is more emphasis on ‘The House Haunted’, insinuating the house is haunted and the boy is in possible danger. Coming to the title of the film in the centre on top of the protagonist suggests the name has a interlink with character as it suggests there is something within. The red on ‘SI’ indicates danger and blood thus highlighting the colour’s significance. The word ‘Insidious’ means to entrap treacherous or deceitful. Acing in a harmless way but with great effect. The capitalised and therefore stands out. This as a title is the main aim behind it.
