Introduction to EnergyManagement and the

International Responsein Shipping

Introducing key notions of energy sources and securitythe impact of air emissions and the internationalresponse particularly in shipping The aim of this moduleis to build a common vocabulary and understandingstarting by exploring notions such as externalitymanagement and governance The focus will thenshift to energy and its use particularly relating tosocial contexts societal evolutions and our continueddependence on fossil fuels Thereafter air pollution andassociated international responses will be examinedalong with the rise of the concept of energy efficiencyand the importance of energy management The last partof the module focuses on the response to air pollution

Energy Efficiency andShip Design

Fuel consumption in ship design and operation hasbeen widely studied over the years by ship owners andoperators and a complete ship energy system designis presented in this module including pertinent IMOregulationsBoth ship resistance and propulsion are reviewed toestablish principles of ship powering in the contextof energy efficiency improvement methodologies

Design approaches and technologies are assessedfor applicability to different vessel types Ship mainand auxiliary engines energy consumers and theirinteractions including renewable energy devices are alsoreviewedShip energy efficiency is considered not only for thesea voyage but also for the port approach and portoperations in addition to special conditions such asshallow water and river transport A probabilistic shiplife-cycle approach is employed to measure the effects ofship design and energy efficiency improvementsGuidelines and interpretations of IMOrsquos work on shipenergy efficiency through the Energy Efficiency DesignIndex (EEDI) are appraised and the issue of shipboardemissions is examined from the ship design perspectivebull Ship design and energy efficiencybull Frictional and viscous resistance reduction

Energy EfficientShip Operations

Optimal ship operation provides by far the greatestopportunities for energy-saving and CO2 reductionAchieving this depends on a number of stakeholders

from charterers and port operators to ship owners andmanagers Also there are binding legal contracts thatneed to be observed All these impose constraints andcreate barriers to the most efficient operation of ships This module considers key topics from management tolegal and commercial issues from just-in-time and virtualarrival to slow steaming and relevant technical and legalconstraints from weather routing to e-navigation andadvanced communication systems and from ballastwater to trim optimisation and the all important portoperationbull Ship management legal aspects and energy efficiency minus Shipping contracts minus Contractual legal and regulatory frameworks minus Commercial requirements minus Role of industry stakeholders

Energy ManagementOn-board Ship

The proper management and maintenance of variousship-board systems and technical assets represents animportant opportunity for greater energy efficiencyand reduced costs Most of these measures are underthe control of the ship owner andor operator and cantherefore be relatively easy to implement This module deals with ship-board activities and theirimpact on fuel consumption with particular focus onthe optimal performance of technical systems andmachinery

Distance learning is a flexible cost-effective way of studying without theneed to take time off work or away from home
