Earphones may soothe yo -ur mind but they may alsoclaim your life if you wearthem while walking or dri -

ving on the roads. The City trafficpolice have noticed that the wid -espread habit of listening tomusic has become one of the ma -jor causes for the road accidents.

Recently City traffic policeconducted a special drive againstusing cellphone while driving, inNorth District covering 13 policestations, and booked 2,122drivers for using earphones whiledriving. Interestingly, of the 2,122booked, 1,226 were car drivers,857 are motorcyclists and 38 ofthem are auto rickshaw drivers.

Ironically, many of them whowere booked for the same viola-tion are posting their queries on

Hyderabad Traffic Police Faceb -ook page saying “Why can’t weuse headphones while driving?

Police commented: “Head ph -o nes are a form of distraction asthey interfere with hearing. A dis-traction is anything that draws thedriver’s attention away from driv-ing towards something within oroutside the vehicle, thereby affect-ing his driving performance.”

While pedestrians are posingthreat to motorists by walking

along the roads or crossing theroads while listening to musicthrough mobile phones/Mp3players, motorists are hittingpedestrians while they are walk-ing along the road. Pedestriansare forced to walk on the roadssince there are no footpaths inmany parts of the City.

“Parents now-a-days are allo -wing their children to carry mob -ile phones to the schools and su -ch freedom would sometimes le -

ad to disasters. In foreign countr -ies there are proposals to intro-duce legislation for iPod oblivion. However, we don’t think makingit illegal to cross the road using adevice is the answer unless it re a -lly changes once behaviour,” sa idDCP (traffic) GVG Ashok Kumar.

In Britain about 17 roadaccidents that occur every

day is attributed to peopleusing MP3 players, mobilephones and electronic gad-gets while on the move, revealed a survey.

Incidentsn D Shanti Kumar, 19, an

engineering student ofMethodist EngineeringCollege in Abids was runover by a train while hewas walking on the trackswhile listening to musicthrough his mobile phone. He failed to hear traincoming from behind sincehe was wearing head-phones , said theGovernment RailwayPolice.

n A few months ago, MohiniShanti Priya, 23, a softwareengineer was hit by a trainat Fatehnagar while shewas crossing the trackswhile listening to musicfrom her mobile phoneusing earphones.

n In yet another case JTheresa, 16 died after atrain hit her atSitaphalmandi railway sta-tion. Here too she was lis-tening to music and hencecouldn’t hear the warningsof other passengers.

“If we notice anymotorist using ear-phones while driv-ing and couldn’tstop them, we alertour men stationedin the next junctionto catch them. Theviolator is bookedunder Section 184(A) of MV Act,which attracts apenalty of `500

Step foot into RythuBazaar in Erragadda andapart from the fresh veg-etables sold by vendors,

one sees piles of them in thegarbage bins.

While these vegetables maynot be spoilt, it is still disposedoff without even giving it athought that thousands of thepeople in the City go to sleephungry.

This criminal waste is notrestricted just to this vegetablemarket, the practice to throwaway any excess vegetables, sadly, is prevalent in all themajor vegetables and fruitsmarket area.

It is an overwhelming sightwhen fresh vegetables or veg-etables which are on the vergeof getting spoilt, end up asgarbage.

And this is when an esti-mated 624689 people inHyderabad live in 104 identi-fied and 24 unidentified slums.

What is worse is that thevegetable vendors are indenial. “Why would we throwfresh vegetables? We onlythrow what is spoilt,” saidKrishna Babu, a vendor.Apparently, the sight of freshvegetables in the garbage bindoesn’t move him much.

There are some, however, who are honest enough toagree. “Sometimes, we throwvegetables that are in excess

even if they aren’t spoilt. Thereare many here who can’t carrythe vegetables back home andprefer to throw it instead,” saidKaleri Mahesh, a vendor.

When asked him why hedoesn’t give away the ‘excess’vegetables to the poor orneedy, Mahesh sheepishlyreplied, “That idea neveroccurred to me. I will startdoing this now.”

Why blame the often illiter-ate vegetable vendors wheneven well educated restaura-teurs prefer to throw the left-over food straight into the bin. After closing hours, the GHMCbin near the Tolichowki foodcourt area is overflowing withfood, good enough to be eaten.

The leftover food is aplentyin the City with an abundanceof restaurants.

“At the end of the day inour restaurant, we haveenough food to feed at least 50people comfortably, yet wethrow it away. The thoughtless-ness is shocking,” said a waiterof a restaurant in Banjara Hills.

“So insensitive are we arethat even when we haveexcess food at home kept inthe refrigerator for more thanthree days, instead of it beinggiven to somebody hungry, weprefer to throw it regardless ofit still being edible,” said a dis-appointed Anjum Khan, asocial worker.

The nawabi culture of wast-ing food is undeniably wellrooted in all of us. Call an NGOand you will know exactly howmany people need to fed, evenit is just leftovers or excess.

A step in the rightdirection Postnoon News

Google ‘orphanages andold-age homes inHyderabad’ and there are

171 search results. What doesthis signify? There are as many(and more) who need food andrehabilitation in the City.

And while someone is cel-ebrating a wedding, anniver-sary or any special occasion, they send the unused or left-over food to them. This is anew trend in Hyderabad andpossibly the only silver liningto a City that otherwise dumpsthe excess food into the bins.

Srivyal Vayyuri of SpoorthiFoundation, an NGO for chil-dren, says the organisationreceives up to three calls amonth where people offer todrop food over. “It is quite hum-bling when people do that. Thisway the children will eat goodfood and the excess food doesn’tgo waste. Having said that, thereis a need for more such contri-butions, especially during wed-dings as a lot of food is unuti-lized,” he said.

Not many NGOs are fortu-nate enough to receive suchgenerosity. There is a desperateneed for more people to comeforward and donate food toNGOs. “In fact, there is also anurgent need for NGOs to stepforward and collect food fromvarious sources includinghomes and distribute it andHyderabad has no social organi-zations to do so,” said AnjumKhan, a social worker.

Restaurateurs are steppingup in this direction. There mightnot be as many, but at least theyhave taken up the initiative. “Wehave been giving our leftovers tovagabonds since six years. Wealso collect whatever food isreusable that our customersleave and distribute it to thehomeless,” said Syed AghaHussain, owner, Dine HillRestaurant.

Think of all the hungry youcan feed and how much you willbe helping them.

Is it the end of the road for Chiran -jeevi at the Centre? And if so, will hewait for the Cabinet expansion in theState? Will he be rewarded, or will it

be his followers who land berths?Chiranjeevi has to wait for the Delhi

nod for his induction and also for seatsto contest in the proposed by-election.Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy andPCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana canassure Chiranjeevi and cajole him fromtime to time, but the final clearance hasto come from the high command.

Chiranjeevi needs to have a lot ofpatience to wait for this. It might take three to six months for all this to happen. On returning from Delhi,Satya narayana informed Chiranjeevi ofthe developments in Delhi. After men-tioning about the induction of AjitSingh, Satyanarayana promised a plumpost to Chiranjeevi in the near future.

While the party position is open,Chiranjeevi will have to wait if he is opt-ing for the Cabinet berth. It is learnt thata former minister with Chiranjeevi, warned him that the Congress party wasnot taking them seriously.

It is learnt that he has advised

Chiranjeevi to demand his pound offlesh by way of seats for the proposedby-elections. Consequently, even beforethe disqualification drama unfolds,Chiranjeevi has started bargaining forhis share of seats.

If the speaker disqualifies Congressand PRP rebels, 17 Assembly seats willfall vacant. Chiranjeevi has sought fourseats for his loyalists while the Congresshas considered only one so far. It lookslike Chiranjeevi may cut a sorry figurewith regards to seats for the by-polls.

Chiranjeevi, it is said, wants seats forK Subbarayudu, G Ramaiah, ThotaTrimurthulu and G Srinivas.

However, the PCC chief has offeredonly Rajampet to Chiranjeevi, the for-mer minister told Postnoon. Even afterconsultations with Satyanarayana, theChiranjeevi group could not come toany conclusion.

The scene is now set to shift to Delhi.

Although the general strike is over andthe chief minister has won the no-con-fidence motion, files are still not mov-

ing in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). Thereasons could be genuine, but several indi-viduals and parties who come to the CMOhave been complaining that files are held up.If one walks into the chief minister’s cham-ber and the chambers of the four secretaries, one can see stacks of files on the tables. It hasbecome a common feature. Files are pilingup in the offices of CM’s secretaries BinoyKumar, Jawahar Reddy, Sridhar and Rawat.

“The chief minister has instructed allofficials in the state secretariat to clear filesat the earliest. But it is reported that theCMO itself has a large number of pendingfiles,” said a teacher requesting for transfer. There are genuine reasons though, forsome files not being cleared. Around 8,000files are said to be waiting for clearance theCMO. The secretaries must give their rec-ommendations to the chief minister on cer-tain files. Once the files come to the secre-taries, they have to first get the clearancefrom the chief minister.

Around 4,000 files pertain to the ACB andvigilance. Cases against the officials can bedropped only by the chief minister. If they

are dropped, it would appear that they areprotecting the corrupt officials. Some of thecases are pending in court. Medical andhealth, education, transfers and those ofteachers are some of the regular files in theCMO. It is reported that the chief minister isnot touching the ACB and vigilance files as ifhe signs them, some officials might lose theirjobs. There are pyravikars moving aroundthe CMO in the evenings for getting filescleared in cases of ACB and vigilance for get-ting some of employees reinstated.

Iam not very fond of green leafyvegetables but I keep hearing

that they need to be included in the diet on a regular basis. I want to know more about green leafyvegetables.

Green leaves contain vitamin A,C, folic acid, riboflavin, thiamine, Bcarotene, minerals like iron and cal-cium, a lot of fibre and antioxidants. The carotene in Glyns is convertedin the body into vitamin A that pre-vents blindness. Many types ofgreens are available and consumedall over the country, the commonlyconsumed greens are palak, ama-ranth, fenugreek, and drumstick, mint, gongura etc. Green leafy veg-etables are inexpensive and easilyavailable. They contain all impor-tant nutrients required for growthand maintenance of health. Hencegreen leafy vegetables must be con-sumed by children and pregnantand lactating mothers to get themuch needed beta carotene, calci-um and iron.

Indian diets are more of cerealbased and vegetarian diets, includ-ing green leafy vegetables in the dietregularly is very important to avoidmicronutrient deficiencies. Try toinclude at least 50gm of green leafyvegetables every day in your diet.Even though green leafy vegetablesare a very good source of manymicronutrients, care must be takenin the preparation of these leaves, asthey contain a lot of mud and soil. Also, to remove the pesticide con-tent proper cleaning of the leavesbefore preparation is very impor-tant. All green leafy vegetables areseasonal and not available in sum-mer months.

One can take an extra effort togrow them at home; that is inkitchen gardens. There are variousways to cultivate the home gardenseven in cities. Terrace gardens andone square-foot gardens etc arepossibilities. Developing kitchengardens can ensure regular supplyof greens and an added advantageof this is that they are free from con-tamination of chemicals in the formof pesticides.

Located in Mangalhat, a stonethrow away from Nampally, isthe 200-year-old Ram temple

— Sitaram Bagh. It is not wellknown in Hyderabad unlike thePeddamma Guddi or Chilkur Balajitemples but Sitaram Bagh is aunique one of a kind abode of theGods.

It was built in 1833 by aRajasthani family who were settledin the Nizam state of Hyderabad. The founder of the temple donatedfunds to the nawab and when thenawab asked him what he wantedin return, the founder requestedhim to allow building of this temple.

Many believe that when LordRama was in vanvas, he had stayedin this particular bagh too. Therefore they constructed a tem-

ple dedicated o him. The sixth gen-eration of the founding family stillremain its trustee members.

A group of 60 brahmin familiesoriginally from Tamil Nadu resideon the temple premises and theirjob is not only to do seva to the Godsbut also act as caretakers to the

temple. It has been graded B,Tirupathi being an Grade A templeand has recently been taken underthe Endowment Act.

Today the Bagh spreads over 25acres but according to local legendsit stretched from Mehdipatnam toNampally. The main temple of theBagh is of Ram and it also has holyabodes for Lakshmi, Ganesha,Vardharaja, Hanuman and Shiva. The main gateway of the bagh isalmost three stories high andenclosed by huge wooden doors. Allthe structures are constructedaccording to North Indian architec-ture. They look very different fromSouth Indian temples, including thestyle of the Gopuram.

What makes Sitaram Bagh veryunique is that it shares a wall with aMasjid. Only in Ayodhya can it beseen where a temple a masjid sharea wall. Also Sitaram Bagh has adepiction of the pattabishekhamwhich is very rare.

Sitaram Bagh is a beautiful tem-ple but on its way to ruin because oflack of proper funds and alsobecause it has been caught in theugly political net. Places of historydeserve more respect than this.

Prime Minister ManmohanSingh has put an end toambiguity over the govern-

ment’s policy on how it plans toimplement the controversialnuclear power projects by sayingthe Kudankulam plant will startoperations in the next couple ofmonths.

The four reactors, built withRussian technology, are slated toprovide 4,000MW to the nationalpower grid and cater to both thedomestic and industrial con-sumers.

One can’t help but wonder ifthe newfound panacea for ourpower woes will go the same wayas the mega dams, whichJawaharlal Nehru had touted as“temples of development”. Theseprojects provided electricity andirrigated millions of hectares butalso displaced millions of people

and drowned vast stretches ofpristine forests.

Till Fukushima, Japan was theposter boy for champions of “safe,fail-proof” nuclear power and thetsunami nailed all the well-craftedand well-publicised lies. It hascome to a point where evenbreast milk in the nearbyprecincts have been found con-taminated by radiation.

If somebody wants to estab-lish a firecracker factory next toyour house won’t you want itshifted to some uninhabited area?Won’t you be worried for the safe-ty of your family and that of theneighbourhood even if the toprocket scientist comes and tellsyou about its safeguards?

In a country where operationsand safety features of all nuclearfacilities are ‘classified’ and detailsopaque due to ‘national security’concerns, it is only natural thatthe threatened population is up in

arms.Visuals of tribal folk near the

Jaduguda uranium mines suffer-

ing from unknown diseases, con-genital defects in newborns, sterility in young adults, and lung

disease in mine workers, fromAnand Patwardhan’s War andPeace (the filmmaker had to go allthe way to the Supreme Court toget the censors’ cuts quashed) areenough to make anyone have sec-ond thoughts about ‘safe’ nuclearpower production.

The prime minister’s softvoiced yet razor sharp concludingobservation that Kudankulamprotests were “overdone” smacksof arrogance and makes a mock-ery of the idea of democracy. Notsurprising for a head of the gov-ernment who is used to being dic-tated by a higher power.

When the whole world isphasing out nuclear power andreplacing it with greener and sus-tainable technologies, it’s sad thatour government is going for it — apolicy with single-minded focusof burgeoning the wallets of pri-vate players at the cost of healthand safety of public.

Whose power is it anyway?

Troops and protesters areclashing for the thirdstraight day in Cairo, pelting each other with

rocks in skirmishes near parlia-ment in the heart of the Egyptiancapital.

At least 10 protesters havebeen killed and 441 wounded inthe three days of violence whichbegan when one of several hun-dred peaceful protesters staginga sit-in outside the cabinetoffices was detained and beatenby troops. The protesters aredemanding that the nation’s rul-ing military immediately stepdown.

Sunday’s clashes took placeas unofficial results from a sec-ond round of voting in parlia-mentary elections showed thecontinued dominance ofIslamist parties at the polls. Thethird and final round of voting isslated for next month.

On Saturday, troops pulledwomen across the pavement bytheir hair, knocking off theirheadscarves. Young activists

were kicked in the head untilthey lay motionless in TahrirSquare, Cairo.

Unfazed by TV camerascatching every move, Egypt’smilitary took a dramaticallyheavier hand to crush protestsagainst its rule.

The most sustained crack-down yet is possibly a sign thatthe generals who took power

after Hosni Mubarak was oustedin February are confident thatthe Egyptian public is on its sideafter two rounds of parliamen-tary elections, and that Islamistparties winning the vote will stayout of the fight while pro-democracy protesters becomemore isolated.

Still, the generals risk turningmore Egyptians against them,

especially from outrage over theabuse of women. Photos andvideo posted online showedtroops pulling up the shirt of onewoman protester in a conserva-tive headscarf, leaving her half-naked as they dragged her in thestreet.

“Do they think this ismanly?” Toqa Nosseir, a 19-year-old student, said of the attackson women. “Where is the digni-ty? No one can approve or acceptwhat is happening here,” shesaid. “The military council wantsto silence all criticism. They wantto hold on power .I will notaccept this humiliation just forthe sake of stability.”

Nearby in Tahrir, protestersheld up newspapers with theimage of the half-strippedwoman on the front page topassing cars, shouting sarcasti-cally: “This is the army that isprotecting us.”

SEOUL: Belying his caricature ima -ge as an eccentric playboy, Kim Jo -ng-Il was a politically skilled andruthless ruler who kept North Ko -rea's brutal regime in place despitefamine and economic decline.

Kim, who died on Saturday of aheart attack aged 69, perpetuatedhis power using propaganda, prison camps, an all-pervadingpersonality cult inherited from hisfather and a massive army.

He defied widespread predic-tions of regime collapse as thecommunist state's commandeconomy wilted under its owncontradictions and Soviet aid driedup in the early 1990s.

In the mid- to late-1990s Kimpresided over a famine that bysome estimates killed one million— but he still found resources tocontinue a nuclear weapons pro-gramme culminating in tests inOctober 2006 and May 2009.

Severe food shortages contin-

ue. The UN children's fund esti-mates one-third of children arestunted by malnutrition.

The regime faces increasingpressure from sanctions over itsnuclear and missile programmesand the parlous state of the econo-my. But the late leader's state ofhealth accelerated a perilous suc-cession.

Kim suffered a stroke in August2008. Some reports say he also suf-fered from kidney failure whichrequired dialysis, diabetes andhigh blood pressure.

More worryingly, analysts saidhis decision-making had becomeincreasingly erratic — because ofthe stroke's after-effects, orbecause he was trying to bolsterthe credentials of his youngest sonJong-Un as eventual successor.

Kim Jong-Il inherited powerfrom his father Kim Il-Sung, the100th anniversary of whose birthcomes next year in another flash-point date that has US and SouthKorean analysts watching on ner-

vously. According to hagiographicofficial accounts, Kim Jong-Il wasborn on February 16, 1942 at

Mount Paekdu, a sacred site toKoreans.

Independent experts say hisbirthplace was actually a guerrillacamp in Russia, from where hisfather was fighting Japanese forceswho had colonised the Koreanpeninsula. Some put his birth yearas 1941.

After graduating in 1964 fromuniversity, Kim began his climbthrough the ranks of the rulingWorkers' Party.

He was officially designatedsuccessor in 1980 but did not for-mally take power until three yearsafter the 1994 death of his father.

Visitors or escapees portrayedKim as a cognac-guzzling playboy, with an appetite for foreign films, fine dining and women.

He was said to have a collectionof 20,000 Hollywood movies, andengineered the kidnap in 1978 of aSouth Korean film director and hisgirlfriend.

But the playboy imageobscured his dark past.

Playboy and delusional tyrant

The young man tipped to beNorth Korea's next leaderand propel the Kim dynasty

into a third generation is evenmore of an enigma than his mer-curial father Kim Jong-Il, who hasdied at the age of 69.

North Korean state media onMonday urged people to followKim's youngest son and heirapparent Kim Jong-Unn (above),aged in his late 20s, afterannouncing that his father haddied on Saturday, plunging thecountry into confusion.

Kim Jong-Un's life is shroud-ed in mystery, but in recent yearshe has been pushed to the fore-front as his father apparentlyspeeded up plans for a seconddynastic succession after suffer-ing a stroke in August 2008.

In a memoir, Kenji Fujimoto,a former Japanese sushi chef forKim Jong-Il, described the Swiss-educated Jong-Un as a "chip offthe old block, a spitting image ofhis father in terms of face, bodyshape and personality".

Zlatko Salaj, a 67-year-oldCroatian, has created aChristmas Story for himself.

Not a story to tell, but one toshow the world. His ChristmasStory is actually his home, whichhe decks up in lights and coloursevery year around the holidays.

The former telecommunica-tions engineer owns a countryestate in Grabovinca, located incentral Croatia. The entire estateis decorated at this time of year.Thousands of visitors come by toview the spectacle created bySalaj and his family. When hestarted this practice in 2002, Salaj

had a modest 70,000 light bulbsthat were put up on all the shrubsand trees across his 17-acreestate.

When people asked him howmany he would put up the nextyear, his reply was a 100,000. Inthis way, the lights and decora-tions kept growing in number. This year, the number has uppedto 1.2 million Christmas lights. Not just ordinary ones, he haslights shaped like Santa Clausand reindeer.

The festive spirit of his deco-rations is contagious and attractschildren and adults alike from all

over the region.Salaj says that he was not

always able to afford such extrav-agances. In fact, when he was achild, his family was poor.

As a grown up, he spent manyyears working abroad, in theMiddle East and Africa.

When he returned home, hefelt the need for such a projectand began to work on theChristmas Story

Preparing for the event startsthree months prior to Christmas, and it takes them an equalamount of time to dismantleeverything.

Long-gone are the days whenpainting was strictly donewith specialised tools, like

brushes, on canvases. Nowadaysartists use anything from remote-controlled toy cars to Molotovcocktails to express their talents. So it should come to know sur-prise Kyle Lambert uses just onefinger and the Apple iPad to cre-ate detailed celebrity portraits.

Kyle Lambert is a young Engl -ish artist who specialises in por-traits rendered using an iPad tab -let and an $8 app, called Brushes. He only uses one finger as thebrush, but judging by the detailedoutcome, you’d think he has awhole set of professional toolsand paints. Lambert starts out bysketching the basic facial propor-tions, drawing simple lin es where

the mouth, nose and ey es shouldbe, making sure he gets the shapeof the sitter’s head just right. Itlooks like the kind of sketch evenI could do, but he says it’s the

most important part of making aportrait, because it serves as theframework for the entire piece

After the initial sketch, hemoves on to sketching the facialfeatures, making sure he achievesa satisfying likeliness to the sitter, because modifications to the facewill be difficult to make after thispoint. Then he adds tone to hissketch using the black paint-brush tool with various levels ofopacity, before introducing high-lights to the face, using the whitepaintbrush. Colours are addedon ly in the final stages of theproce ss, and blend with the blackand white underneath. It’s amaz-ing the level of detail he canachieve, starting from scratch, but it’s also proof of how far tech-nology has come in recent years.

The Chinese hotel is notthe only one which has beencreative with its festive decora-tions this year. The KahlerGrand Hotel in Rochester,Minnesota, recently unveiled agiant gingerbread house in itslobby in a bid to provide

Christmas cheer to its guests.According to reports the

only goal in a 1-0 win overArsenal. The Spaniard slid in hissixth goal of the season after 53minutes at the Etihad Stadiumto finally give City reward forsome brilliant attacking play.

Yet Arsenal, although per-haps lucky not to have Alex Songsent off, threatened on a num-ber of occasions and Joe Hartsaved well from ThomasVermaelen late on.

Gervinho had Arsenal’s firstserious opportunity but Hartsaved well.

Mario Balotelli almost gaveCity the lead with an oppor-tunistic acrobatic shot butWojciech Szczesny reactedquickly. City caught Arsenal onthe counter-attack to take thelead seven minutes after the

restart. Samir Nasri foundBalotelli in space down the leftand the Italian charged forwardto cut inside and shoot.

Szczesny parried but SergioAguero reacted quickly to headacross goal for Silva to slide inand score.

It was a lead which wasalmost wiped out within aminute as Theo Walcott forcedHart to tip over from 18 yards.

Robin van Persie thought hehad equalised when he deftlychipped Hart three minuteslater but the flag was raised foroffside and Pablo Zabaletaalmost made it 2-0 when heseized on a poor pass fromLaurent Koscielny but droveagainst the post with Szczesnybeaten. Arsenal pressed untilthe end with Vermaelen forcingHart to make a brilliant savewith a well-struck shot followinga short free-kick. ES

Manchester United th -rew down the gauntletto Manchester City by

reclaiming top spot in theBarclays Premier League with acomfortable 2-0 win at QPR.

Wayne Rooney scored his

15th goal of the season after just52 seconds and the championsmissed a succession of chancesbefore Michael Carrick’s firsttop-flight goal for almost twoyears all but sealed the points.

United could easily have

scored six against a QPR sidewho twice went close them-selves through Heidar Helgusonand also saw substitute DJCampbell miss the easiest ofvolleys. It took the visitors 52seconds to strike. Rooney nod-

ded the ball out to AntonioValencia before bursting intothe box and stooping to headhome the winger’s cross.

Only a block from DannyGab bidon prevented DannyWelbeck making it 2-0 minuteslater, while Welbeck was wrong-ly flagged offside after steeringin what he thought was United’ssecond goal before JonnyEvans, Phil Jones and Valenciaall ought to have scored in thespace of three minutes justbefore the half-hour. QPRalmost made United pay fortheir wastefulness when DavidDe Gea saved Helguson’s lowstrike with his leg, while JayBothroyd was close with a skid-ding shot from 20 yards.

The away side held their on -e-goal lead through to the inter-val, and United continued to lo -ok more likely to score the ga -me’s second goal after the break. In the 56th minute Joey Bartongifted the ball to Carrick, whowas allowed to carry it 30 yardsbefore drilling beyond RadekCerny. ES

Alcoholism worrisomeThe opinion piece on alcoholism in India isa well-balanced article. It feels good whensomeone approaches the subject withobjectivity and refuses to sing the regularmoralist tune on alcoholism. Mindlessbans are not only ineffective but also tendto drive people to dangerous hooch andhelp smugglers. An open-mindedapproach, which places importance onawareness rather than judgmental views, will be more effective in controlling alco-holism. State governments should learnfrom their mistakes while framing theirpolicies. – Anirudh Krishna

TALK BACKWorking womenThe article Supermums face HR Kryptonitehas brought out an issue, which is deliber-ately ignored by most employers. Workingmothers, from top executives to corporationsweepers, are at the receiving end offlawed policies, which show little sensitivityto their demanding schedules.

An HR executive’s take on the need toestablish good rapport to avail special ben-efits smacks of arrogance. The companypolicy-makers must understand that theseconcessions are not charity handouts butessential measures to keep the employeesmotivated and ensuring quality output.Kudos to Postnoon for the candid story.

Caution onmetro rail The Comment pagecolumn on Metro railis a welcomereminder and a wake-up call forHyderabadis. We have lost most of ourlakes and green cover in the process ofbecoming an IT hub. While progress hascreated jobs, it has also destroyed ele-ments that were inseparable from thereal Hyderabad. If we rush through theMetro without scrutiny, we will end updestroying the building blocks that makethis city one of the most preferred workdestinations. – Humaira Ali

Don’t taunt thecopsIt is wrong to pick up rows withcops when they advise, or warn usto ensure our safety.

Walking on railway tracks withearphones plugged in one’s ears isindeed a sure means of inviting danger. It isunclear whether the death of the boy whowas walking on the tracks was an accidentor suicide.

But warnings like the ones issued bythe Hyderabad city traffic police onFacebook should be taken in the properway. There’s no point in ruing something ofwhich one was clearly warned. Forewarnedis forearmed. – Venkatesh Bharadwaj

Child labourshamefulIt is sad and shameful that forall the development andprogress we boast of, we arestill tolerating or encouragingchild labour. When officials

file reports of ‘zero cases’ it soundsincredibly stupid as there is not one dis-trict in the state that does not have chil-dren working in eateries or as domestichelps. We are also equally responsible forthe plight of these children as we have noqualms in going to such places or employ-ing child labourers. The public should takean active role and ensure that officialsperform their duties diligently.

Except for signing a $150-milliondeal on November 26 with CalsRefineries Ltd, whose shares aretrading at a petty 25 paise per scripon the Bombay Stock Exchange,

Kuwait-based Al Qebla Al Watya is no Caltexor Shell to bear a popular label on itself.

A search through google.com for thisname doesn’t throw the company website inthe first page of results.

And, the Kiran Kumar Reddy-led CongressGovernment in the State made a grandioseannouncement of its signing a memorandumof understanding (MoU) with this firm for theestablishment of a $2-billion oil refinery inVisakhapatnam as part of the Petro Chemicaland Petroleum Industrial Region (PCPIR). TheMoU was signed by the representatives of AlQebla Al Watya with the officials of the StateGovernment on December 15 in the presenceof Kiran Kumar Reddy and his Cabinet col-leagues Vatti Vasanatha Kumar, Erasu PrathapReddy, Pasupuleti Balaraju and J Geeta Reddy.

Next day, former Secretary to Governmentof India EAS Sarma wrote to the Governmentraising doubts about the credibility and pop-ularity of the company.

It’s not too long since the Governmentsigned an MoU with Amerind PetroleumPrivate Ltd for the setting up of a refinery nearVisakhapatnam at an estimated cost of`12,000 crore. The environment groups underthe aegis of Sarma cried foul over this dealtoo. The promoters ensured that they signedthe agreement in the presence of the chiefminister on November 17.

Media too, cried hoarse on the possibilityof realising the Amerind Petroleum refinery,as the promoters claimed that theywould dismantle an existing

unit in Newark in New Jersey (USA) and cartit to India.

The Government, on its part, remainedtight lipped. How should the silence beunderstood? Is it weakness or virtue?

As if to recall the age-old adage that histo-ry repeats itself, several such memoranda ofunderstanding were signed in its initialeuphoria during the regime of YS RajasekharaReddy. The Fab City MoU under the auspicesof Jun Min, considered guru in the semi-con-ductor industry, his representative VinodAgarwal of SemIndia, remained a blot on theindustrial character of the State. TheGovernment eventually seized the 1,200 acresgiven to SemIndia in a phased manner.

The list of projects that remained non-starters elongated with the Odyssey ScienceCity in Anantapur district with an investmentof $25 billion in a whopping 65,000 acres, the$1.60-billion Nizampatnam port develop-ment by Skoda Export, the upstart SpecialEconomic Zones (SEZ), Brahmani Steels(`20,000-crore investment, spread in 10,700acres in Kadapa district), Vadarevu-Nizampatnam Port and Industrial Corridor(VANPIC) with an estimated `2,500-crore ini-

tial investment in more than 10,000 acres, promises made at partnerships summits inthe last one decade are fresh in the minds ofpeople.

The State signed an MoU with SpringfieldLand Corporation and Macquarie Bank fromAustralia and Singapore's Juron InternationalGroup and Semb Corp Industries for theOdyssey Science City.

Nothing came out of it, and the State’scredibility took a drubbing. A few hotels ben-efitted through hospitality charges and liver-ies cost, though. Out of the 113 SEZs, barely 30are functional in the State.

Struck by a brainwave, Kiran KumarReddy announced that he cleared proposalsfor 30 industrial units `25,000 crore on a sin-gle day, barely within six months of assum-ing office as the chief minister. Thisgrandiose announcement came on February11 this year.

What lays bare the shallowness of all thesetall claims is the fact that existing industriesare reeling under six-to-eight-hour powercuts a day. Some industries had to plead withthe State Government for lifting of ‘power hol-idays’. Who is the government trying to fool?

Is State’s silence aweakness or virtue?

It’s gonna be a hotArab Summer

In the last one year, severaldictators of West Asia

founds themselves dis-graced and deposed and in

some cases, executed. Thesegiants fell to the combined

onslaught of public resentment, effectively spread by social net-

working sites, and liberal sup-port from Western countries. The

Arab Spring, as it came to bepopularly known, removed the

dictators but left a power vacu-um in a region with little credi-

ble alternatives to replace thefallen despots. Egypt, where thepopular protests combined withmilitary support forced Mubarak

to abdicate, is bleeding againwith Islamists on the verge of

grabbing power and angryyouths battling it out with riot

police and the Army in thestreets. One bitter lesson that

keeps repeating in the history ofmankind is that when an estab-

lished structure is demolishedwithout a credible substitute

only chaos and suffering will fol-low. We can only hope the

shoots of Arab Spring don’twither in the political heat.

WHY WE LOVE...Václav Havel

In Disturbing the Peace, VáclavHavel wrote: “There's alwayssomething suspect about an

intellectual on the winningside”, and to many of his coun-

trymen, Havel’s rise to theCzechoslovakian presidency

reeked of suspicion. Havel was abetter dissident than a presi-

dent. And though he presidedover the breakup of his country,

his heart always rang true. Inpolitics, he was a man out of hiselement, but no one could ever

fault his spirit and courage.

EPERNAY: Do you take yourchampagne brut or rose? Aroundthe world the French sparklingwine is still the ultimate festivedrink, but these days it oftencomes in shades of golden pinkto pomegranate.

First seen as a quirky varia-tion on classic white bubbly —even dismissed as a “woman’sdrink” — rose champagne hasgrown into far more than a fad, with a market share that has beenrising steadily for 10 years.

All of France’s top champagnehouses have started offering

rose, and the northeastern grow-ing region is producing ever moreof it, according to Thierry Gasco, cellar master at Pommery.

“More and more wine lovers, including men, have acceptedrose in its own right,” said Gasco.

For 26 years Francois Domihas run the cellars at Billecart-Salmon, a 19th-century cham-pagne producer which sells 1.5 totwo million bottles, 60 percent ofthem exported, and whose rosehas secured a global reputation.

On a tour of the housecellars in Mareuil-sur-Ay, Domiexplained why in his viewrose champagne has an advan-

tage over white: “It adds colour tothe table — and it softens theimage of champagne, it makes itmore genial.”

Rose accounts for less than athird of production at Billecart-Salmon, made from the threemain grapes of the champagneregion: chardonnay, pinot noirand pinot meunier.

Wine producers are bannedby European Union law frommixing red and white wines toproduce rose, which has to bemade by the traditional methodof leaving crushed red grape skinsto soak with their juice.

Champagne is the exception:

here rose is made by mixing inred wine, less than 10 percent inthe case of Billecart-Salmon.

Domi doses the red wine untilhe achieves just the right colourand aroma, nothing too tannic, the aim being a champagne witha slight hint of dried fruit andstrawberry.

— ‘Getting more fruit fromthe grape’ —

A handful of champenoiswinegrowers — a tiny minority— choose to make their roseby steeping grape skins injuice, known as the “saignee”method from the French wordfor bleeding.

The result, says Domi, is awine with “more power, wherethe aromas are more pro-nounced, more striking.”

Billecart-Salmon, whose rosechampagne is seen by somme-liers as one of the best, prefers toput the accent on “subtlety, deli-cacy” — but the bleeding methodhas its fervent advocates.

One of them is Jean-BaptisteGeoffroy, whose nearby vineyardproduces 120,000 bottles per year,20 percent of them rose, against aregional average of eight to 10percent.

“A ‘saignee’ rose, in terms oftaste, is a world apart,” he said.

Made 100-percent from pinotnoir grape, his deep-colouredrose aims for something“scrumptious, explosive, withnotes of red berry.”

“When it’s young, a rose hasto have punch,” said the 40-something winegrower — whobelieves the bleeding methodenables him to get “more of thefruit” from the grape.

“What bothers me withblended roses is that many are —to the taste — near-identical towhite champagnes.

“And when you mix whitewith red, you never achieve per-fect unity. The touch of tannic redlacks harmony with the white”.

But he admits hismethod sometimes catchestasters off guard.

“Either they love it, or theyhate it — especially if they expecta rose that tastes either like white,or very light.”

Recently Geoffroy startedexperimenting with a new type ofrose altogether, with just 2,000bottles produced so far.

It is obtained by maceratinglight-skinned chardonnay anddark-skinned pinot noir grapestogether, instead of maceratingeach grape separately then dos-ing the mix — the standardmethod for almost all champagneand wine production.

“No one had tried it before,”Geoffroy smiled. The result? A flo-ral, mineral wine with hints ofexotic fruit.

In a period in which the fash-ion fraternity found itself

playing epic guessing gamesover the identity of the designer

chosen to create the futureQueen's wedding garb and who

would be John Galliano's suc-cessor at Dior, it was the jumper,

the lovely, straightforwardjumper, that provided light

relief. You know where you arewith a jumper, you see. It's a gar-

ment everyone understands, one you pull over your head

in the morning without stopping to think.

Offering unlimited access toa new, laid-back way of dressing

that requires no lengthy stylingsessions in front of the bedroommirror, the year's sweater revival

began back in January — onJanuary 22, to be precise. The

nights were long, the days dark(perfect jumper weather), and

Sarah Lund, stoic star of Danishdrama The Killing, made her

first appearance on our screens.A regular wearer of boxy Fair

Isle jumpers in a host of shadesand pallets, Lund, played by

Sofie Gråbøl, became this year'smost talked-about heroine and,

as a result, the chief ambassadorof this year's biggest

knitwear trend.On the autumn/winter cat-

walks, with Lund at the forefrontof designers' minds, the jumper

was reborn. While in previousyears jumpers and sweaters had

received little attention fromdesigners, who felt them too

unremarkable to put into aready-to-wear collection, this

was a season in which knitwear,in both unfussy and experimen-

tal forms, came into its own. At Jil Sander, a simple yet

beautifully made series of intar-

sia knit sweaters was the order ofthe season. At Céline, imaginingthe interiors of luxury cars,Phoebe Philo unveiled a geomet-ric-print sweater inspired by theSeventies.

Now, as we enter the festiveperiod, a time in which jumpersin all shapes and forms havealways been in favour, we turn toChristmas jumpers. The sort thatSarah Lund would be reallyproud of. No longer considered anovelty purchase, the Christmasjumper — be it detailed withreindeers or snowflakes — is afavourite with stylish Londoners.

And this year, thanks to Lundand her followers, there are morejumpers around than everbefore. Fair Isle knits remain afirm favourite with both menand women and are readilyavailable on the high street. Gap,Banana Republic and Topshophave a vast selection of the style, which was named after theScottish island on which thetechnique was developed, whilemore upmarket brands such asMoncler and Aubin & Wills alsohave substantial ranges.

For those seeking somethingthat screams Christmas, asweater detailed with prancingreindeer and jolly teddy bears isa popular option. London-basedillustration studio Lazy Oaf has abroad selection of sweaters bear-ing snowy motifs, while StellaMcCartney's polar-bear knit iscertain to go down well withfashion- forward Frozen Planetfans. Whatever your silly seasonsweater of choice, be sure toteam your Christmas jumperwith a low-key pair of jeans ortights, and remember: it's notjust for Christmas.

IIPM is among the best-known management colleges in the city. As students train tobecome corporate professionals, they also work towards developing a social consciousness.Shiba Minai talks to these IIPMians to find out more about what's in and what's not!

MANAGING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESSStudentswith a cause

The students of IIPM has takenupon themselves to support acause. IIPM Hyderabad has a

team called SACK — Studentsagainst corruption and kickbacks. The SACK team consists of 25 stu-dents and their faculty SyedMohsin Ali, who strongly believein the cause. These students dividethemselves into multiple groupsand give an hour-long presenta-tion on the repercussions of cor-ruption. They also give tips on howthe student community (the futureof the country) at their respectivelevels, can contribute to the eradi-cation of corruption from ourcountry. These IIPMians are sup-

portive of the Lokpal bill and havebeen advocating the same. Theyalso have an active page on FBthat is posted with activities andcontinues to create awareness. These students have visited morethan 50 colleges in the city andhave reached out to over 10,000students. Some of the collegesthey have been to are SriChaitanya Junior College, CBIT, StAnn’s, Badruka College ofCommerce and Arts, VVIT, VasaviEngineering College, Avanthi andDegree College located in all partsof the twin cities and many morein the outskirts of the city.

Coolest thing about thecollegeSome of the faculty is workingprofessionals who teach parttime. So their lecturers givethem a lot to learn because theyhave hands-on exposure asmanagement students. Studentsalso love the flexibility and inde-pendence given to them. Theyalso love the corporate cultureand all of them already feel like

corporate professionals!

Fashion Trend of thecollegeThe students of this college arealways ready to hit a conferenceor give a presentation in theirbusiness formals. There aresome days when they areallowed to wear business casu-als. Their dress code however, doesn't stop them from lookingstylish, they add that zing totheir attire — by using scarves, stoles and stylish ties.

Which is the coolesthangout outside thecollege?Students of this college trulybelieve in studying hard andpartying harder! These manage-ment students seem to be hav-ing quite a fine taste dining asmost of them love Fusion 9. Thiscollege also has a large numberof hookah lovers, who frequentHitlers Den in AshokaMetropolitan. Their favouritewatering-hole seems to be Rain. They love the music and the

ambience and some of themadmit that the cosy corners aregood to cuddle up with theirspecial ‘someone.’

What would thestudents want tochange about thecollege? We wish we were allowed to letour hair down and wear casualson most days. Also, any new ini-tiative takes long to be approvedas it has to be okayed by thecentral team in Delhi. Thesesmart management studentsalso have the solution. SALMAN KHAN: He should be titled ‘Hit Khan’. IfBollywood’s knight in shining armour bailed theindustry out in 2009 and 2010, he boosted the box-office business this year too, with Bodyguard andReady. In both, neither the content was premium, norwere the performances superlative, but what helpedthe actor stand out were the big bucks his films yield-ed at the box-office, strengthening his position as abankable star.

SHAH RUKH KHAN: Romance ishis forte! But this time ShahRukh Khan donned the garb of asuperhero in RA.One to woo hisfans. Though the film was notappreciated much for its con-tent, his fans liked him as a geekscientist and as a superhero. Healso earned praise for the use oftechnology, innovative market-ing and promotional techniquesto promote his product.

AMITABH BACHCHAN:Retirement? No way, says Big B.Instead he is grabbing centralroles at the age of 69 and thisyear too he came out with twofilms Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baapand Aarakshan — as different aschalk and cheese. If the formersaw him as a flamboyant under-world don, the latter featuredhim as a college principal fight-ing for the rights of students. Interms of business, neither weremoney spinners, but as far asacting is concerned, Amitabh isAmitabh. He was terrific in boththe roles and critics gave him athumbs up.

FARHAN AKHTAR: When thereis a huge star cast, it is not easyto make an impression. ButFarhan Akhtar did that inZindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which also starred Abhay Deoland Hrithik Roshan. The art ofacting is all about sensitivity, emotions, feelings and Farhangot them all right.

AAMIR KHAN: What one missed in Salman Khan’s filmswas prominently present in Aamir Khan-starrer DhobiGhat. Aamir wowed his fans as a lonely painter in thedirectorial debut of his wife Kiran Rao, who deftly han-dled a bouquet of stories, travelling across various sec-tions of society in the lanes and by-lanes of Mumbai. Theactor had just one release, that too, consciously designedfor niche audiences, but everyone eulogised it, saying,“Wow! What a performance! What an actor!” If that werenot enough, Aamir was admired for daring to produceadult comedy Delhi Belly and the film’s success furtherstrengthened his image in volatile Bollywood.

RANBIR KAPOOR: If his great grandfather, grandfa-ther and parents are admired and respected for theircinematic genius, Ranbir Kapoor has proved that he isa true torch-bearer of the Kapoor khandan. Theyoungster excelled in his only release Rockstar, whichwas marred by a bad script. His role required a rangeof emotions and he stood out in every scene and keptthe audiences hooked.

From he-man to funny man, fromflamboyant to sombre, Bollywood’stop-notch actors have shone on thesilver screen in various avatarsand also kept the cash regis-ters ringing. We list the top10 actors of the year

MADHAVAN: An NRI, who belongs to a middle-classfamily, returns home to find himself a wife. Heencounters a drunken girl, who is not interested inmarrying him. But her spirit is such that he falls headover heels in love with her and it becomes heartbreak-ing for him to let her go with some other guy. That wasTanu weds Manu for you. Madhavan not only suitedthe role, but he revelled in it, earning plaudits fromboth critics and fans.

ABHAY DEOL: He emerged as the dark horse. Be it adoomed lover in Dev D or a smart thief in Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye, he has effortlessly carried his roles in thepast. He continued his winning streak as a confusedlover in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

SAIF ALI KHAN: This Khan showed his sparks inOmkara and after that he embarked on a journey thatshowed his versatility. This year he had just one releasein Aarakshan, which was not a super hit, but the film’sbox-office performance didn’t overshadow Saif’s work.Critics felt he scored very highly in sincerity, subtletyand sheer screen presence as a Dalit boy in the movie, highlighting the reservation issue. IANS

The Top 10

HRITHIK ROSHAN: Usually seenin over-the-top roles, HrithikRoshan for the first time did arole that was slightly offbeat andcloser to reality. If Kites didn’tallow him to fly high, his perfor-mance in Zin dagi Na MilegiDobara helped him unleash hispotential as an actor.

Put ‘em both togeth-er, and is it really, trulycrazy talk to ask ifMarvel’s laying thegroundwork for an

Avengers vs X-Men multiplex extrav-aganza?

A Marvel rep didn’t respond to anemail seeking comment.

Jim Littler, co-founder of Comi -cBookMovie.com, meanwhile, didn’tdismiss Conspiracy Corner’s inquiryor its inquiring mind. Well, notimmediately anyway.

“Marvel is indeed leveraging theircomics to tie into the movies, whichthey see as they natural evolution ofthe industry,” Littler said in an email.“But Fox is still the franchise owner ofthe X-Men movies.”

And, yes, Disney is still the fran-chise owner of The Avengers movies.

While rival studios work togetheroccasionally — see: Donald Duckand Daffy Duck sharing the stage inWho Framed Roger Rabbit? — thekey word is occasionally.

With Fox actively working X-Menangles, and Disney just beginningwith The Avengers, “I believe it is stillwishful thinking at this point,” Littlerconcluded of an all-star, big-screenteam-up. Whether Avengers lives upto expectations remains to be seen.

Is Avengers vs X-menthe new superhero flick?

Changingnotes of

themusic

industryAfter ruling the roost for several

decades, audio companies arestruggling to cope with the new

wave of music consumption

Hemanth [email protected]

The Telugu music industryhas undergone a massivechange over the past fewyears and today, some of

the leading audio companies arestruggling to cope with the newwave of how people listen tomusic. There was a time when peoplewould queue up to buy the audiocassettes of eagerly-awaitedfilms. But now, physical salescontinue to drop enormously andaudio piracy seems unstoppable. The onset of digital era has poseda lot more challenges to audiocompanies and it’s only in thepast two years that they areembracing the change. “This is atransition period and slowlyaudio companies are trying tounderstand the paradigm shift inmusic consumption. There was alot of confusion till last yearabout the revenues. Finally, theaudio companies and film pro-ducers have realised that the rev-enue from audio sales hasdropped considerably andbecause of this, the prices beingquoted for audio copyrights havealso decreased,” says filmmakerMadhura Sreedhar who alsoowns a leading audio companycalled Madhura Audio. “Companies can survive only ifthey have a huge catalogue offilms and only then they canthink of recovering the invest-ment over a period of time.Otherwise, it’s very tough for newcompanies to survive in the mar-ket,” he says.

In 2009, the audio of SSRajamouli’s Magadheera was ahuge hit and one of the songs,Panchadhara Bomma set a newrecord in terms of caller tunedownloads and the audio com-pany reportedly recovered theentire investment on the filmfrom that one song alone. Noother song in the past two yearshas been able to match its success. This year JagadanandaKaraka from Sri Rama Rajyamand Endhuko Emo from Rangam are reportedly two ofthe biggest hits.

To compensate for the lossesfrom the physical sales, audio

companies are increasinglylooking at Internet and mobilemarkets to reach out to theaudience. More than 85 percent of the revenue comes fromdigital sales, especially fromValue Added Services (VAS) likecaller tunes and ring tones. After an audio companyacquires the copyrights, theyapproach a third-party serviceprovider, who negotiates withall the mobile service providersto enlist the songs as callertunes and ring tones. Apartfrom the mobile serviceproviders, audio companies geta good share of revenue fromradio stations and event man-agers every time they play asong. Several websites likeRaaga.com and Muzigle.comhave sprung up, which let theusers to stream songs directlyon their websites and they endup paying royalty to the audiocompanies proportional to thenumber of times a song isstreamed.

“The success of a film isvery important to sustain theaudience’s interest in the songspost the release of a film.Sometimes, we don’t evenrecover the investment on theaudio if the film doesn’t work,”Madhura Sreedhar says.Although the future looksbleak for audio companies, they are slowly trying toexplore other avenues to gen-erate revenue and going digi-

tal is definitely on the cards.“In future, most of the

audio companies willstart their own websitesenabling digital sales, downloads and stream-ing of songs,” he pre-dicts.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
