The city police willincrease their hi-techquotient soon and all thegrey areas in policing will

be covered, said City police com-missioner AK Khan.

“Our men can only shift theinjured victims to the hospitalsbut can’t treat them on the spot. Many a times by the time we takethem to the hospital they are pro-nounced dead. We are now coor-dinating with other agencies anddepartments like fire, medicaland others to rush to the spotalong with the patrolling vehicles. To reduce the response time weare now fitting our patrolling withGPS, so that when we get an alert

the nearest vehicle can be spot-ted from the main control roomand sent to the spot. Services ofHyderabad IT companies are

being sought, he said.General public always faced a

problem because of Cyberabadand Hyderabad police jurisdic-

tion. “To overcome the problemwe are now going for tetra com-munication systems, which willenable us to have seamless two-way connectivity. This will alsoenhance the patrolling proficien-cy. We are also planning for acommon emergen-cy number. All theagencies can bealerted from a single point,” heexplained.

Saying that there are about200 security agencies in city, theyhave to work in close co-ordina-tion with the police from time totime and all agencies must giveall the details to the police hestated.

The Narcotics Control Bureauwill have a Intelligence wing,Chemical analysis wing. The

intelligence will definitely have avigil on the pharmacy and bulkdrug companies around the out-skirts of city.

Regulatory steps for cybercafes and security agencies are onthe way. All religious processions

and activitieswill be restrict-ed in such a

way that they do not disturb oth-ers. Referring to the recent Hinduleaders’ protest, he said any ritualor pooja conducted in publicusing loudspeakers will have toobtain police permission. AyappaBhajans and Poojas being con-ducted late in the night hadcaused discomfort to many, hesaid. In another major step, deci-bel metres are being obtained tocheck the sound pollution.

The beautiful rock formations thatadorn the outskirts of Hyderabad areremnants of a land more than 2.5

billion years old. But the fact unknown tous is that these rock formations strewnacross the Deccan Plateau are on the vergeof being wiped out andwe have urbanisation toblame for it.

To prevent thedestruction of this environmental her-itage, a group of artists, photographersand environmentalists from Hyderabadformed a registered society in 1996 calledthe Society to Save Rocks and it has beenworking hard towards the cause. Themembers of the society believe that rapidurbanisation in and around the City haveled to uncontrolled mining and quarryingof the rocks. As a result rock formationshave become a rare sight. The Societywants to impress upon land owners, developers and the government that it’snot yet late and the beautiful granite boul-ders can be used as pieces of art in houses, gardens, colonies and parks. Houses can

be built without destroying the rock for-mations and one such example is authorNarender Luther’s house in Banjara Hills.

Spearheading the awareness pro-gramme in Hyderabad, the Society wasawarded the Heritage Award 2003 fromINTACH for its efforts. They were alsoawarded a certificate of excellence for ser-vice in the field of Tourism Promotion

Everyday is a chal-lenge for him becausethere are so manybutchers that the com-petition is cut throat. At Rs 320 a kilo, mut-

A fullgrown goat costsanywhere betweenRs 2000-3000 andmost butchers buythem from Jiyaguda.A butcher does notmake more than Rs5000 a month, whichis not a great amountthese days.

HYDERABAD: Friendshipbetween the YSR Congress andTelangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)has apparently fortified so muchthat they entered into an ‘unan-nounced’ electoral truck.

It has been in the air that thetwo parties are engaged in talks fora political understanding for allfuture elections. The statement ofpresident of the YSR Congress YSJaganmohan Reddy on Friday

cleared the air on this issue, as heleft ample hints on the prospect ofthe electoral understanding. As ifto crystallise the deal, he said hisparty would not pit any candidateagainst those who resigned forTelangana. As they resigned withstrong aspirations for a separateTelangana, the YSRC decided torespect their sentiment.

The party would contest all 18seats which may go to by-electionsin the State. Jagan said that the leg-islators who voted in favour of theno-confidence motion to highlight

the cause of farmers would conteston their behalf.

He said that he appealed to thewife of late Mahbubnagar MLARajeswara Reddy, to contest forthem. He announced that even ifshe chose to contest on behalf ofanother party, they would not fielda candidate against her.

Sobha Nagi Reddy andNallapureddi PrasannakumarReddy would resign from theAssembly and also their respectiveparties — PRP and TDP — wouldseek re-election from their con-

stituencies on behalf of the YSRC.By issuing the statement, Jagan

apparently cleared the decks forKonda Surekha to seek a re-elec-tion from her native constituencywithout any resistance from TRS.

Jagan’s party would supportNagam Janardhan Reddy fromNagarkurnool constituency, whileit would not field candidatesagainst Jupalli Krishna Rao, and TRajaiah, who joined the TRS.

The relationship between TRSand Jagan loyalists is in the throesever since the latter was preventedfrom going on his ‘Odarpu yatra’ inWarangal. Analysts say that TRSrealised the benefits it could reapby aligning with Jagan and theconverse is true too.

Flesh trade organisers, who recently shiftedtheir bases to the City

outskirts following the policecrackdown, are back with big-ger and better offers.

From arrests made recent-ly, it emerged that pimps arerenting apartments and aremaking them one-stop shopsfor their clients — they boastof lavish entertainmentrooms, bedrooms and alsoguest houses for the clients to rest.

They go a step further toentertain customers byorganising obscene dancesand card games in the enter-tainment room, and prostitu-

tion in bedrooms. After theact, customers may restbefore leaving. They arecharged according to the timethey spend with the girl andthe offers they avail.

To keep their regularshappy, pimps get a fresh stockof ‘wares’ every week spend-ing amounts between Rs25,000 and Rs 30,000 for eachgirl; earlier, it used to be donemonthly.

Despite warnings andnotices served by the police, owners of commercial com-plexes and residences inAmeerpet are still renting outtheir properties to thoseinvolved in flesh trade andfly-by-night software compa-ny operators just for the hugeamounts they get in rent.

“Owners rent out their

premises without even check-ing the antecedents since theyare only concerned about themoney,” said A Srinivasulu, awatchman attached to anapartment located inAmeerpet, who professed toknow about the different tac-tics that pimps employ.“Organisers pay them any-thing in the range of Rs40,000 and Rs 50,000,” he

reveals. “Earlier, affluent people

including ministers, business-men and other VIPs used tovisit these places, but aftersome people from the filmindustry were caught by thePunjagutta police, theystopped coming,” he said.

It is learnt that cops tooare involved. They get their‘mamools’ (bribe) everymonth. They sometimes evenalert the organisers aboutpossible raids by the TaskForce police.

Ramaiah, Krishna andRatnam, constables attachedto the SR Nagar police stationwere suspended by City policecommissioner AK Khan foraccepting ‘mamools’ from anotorious gang behind a prostitution racket.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2011 7Matters of saving and spendingBusinessCity Supply 2010 Absorption 2010 Supply 2011 Absorption 2011

HYDERABAD: The Citywitnessed a 28 per centdrop in office space absorp-tion compared to the previ-ous year recording almost3.76 million sq. ft.

IT and ITeS sector con-tinues to dominate theCity’s office market withnearly 78 per cent of thetotal absorption. The sub-urban locations ofMadhapur and Gachibowliretained their position asthe micro market share witha 77 per cent absorption, according to the annualreport by Cushman &Wakefield, global real estateconsultants.

Builders in the cityaccept location and infras-tructure drive the absorp-tion. There is high demandfor properties from 2,000 sq.ft to 4,000 sq. ft officespaces, if they are at vantagelocations, said T JanardhanReddy, Managing Partner,Vamsiram Builders. Thesupply numbers went up by67 per cent as compared to2010 in areas like Madhapurand Gachibowli.

“The City is losing itsimage in the minds ofinvestors as far as the officespaces are concerned. Newcompanies are not movinginto the City and a few com-panies are moving out too.

The main reasons are politi-cal instability and lack ofadequate power. Investorsgo by hearsay. They relatethe city with these negativeattributes and often theabsolute strengths of thecity are overpowered. Thereis an urgent need to solvethe issues to regain theimage of the City,” said ShivKumar, CEO, Shanta SriramConstructions.

In contrast, the figuresshow the overall absorptionin the country has grown upby eight per cent, reaching35.5 million sq. ft in 2011.On the other hand, therehas been a reduction of over20 per cent in the total sup-ply entering into the marketin 2011 over last year.

This has helpedmarginally reduce demandand the supply gap in theoffice; however, the overallvacancy is still as high as 18per cent.

Bangalore has recordedthe highest absorption inthe country at 11.53 millionsq. ft. This is the highestabsorption rate in the lastfive years of the city.Chennai and NCR haveshown an increase inabsorption rate by 32 percent and 15 per cent respec-tively in comparison to theprevious year.

Kim Jong-un namedarmy commanderNorth Korea’s new leader,

Kim Jong-un, has been for-mally named supreme com-mander of the country’s armedforces, state media said.

Kim Jong-un, who took overafter the death of his father KimJong-il earlier this month, wasappointed at a meeting onFriday, KCNA news agency said.

The move is seen as a clearsign that the young leader isfast consolidating power overNorth Korea.Kim Jong-il,died ofa heart attack on 17 December.

On Wednesday, a hugefuneral procession was stagedfor the late leader in the snowystreets of the capital,Pyongyang. According to KCNA,Kim Jong-un “assumedsupreme commandership ofthe Korean People's Army” at aWorkers’ Party meeting onFriday.

The appointment, whichputs the young Kim in charge ofthe world's fourth largest army, was made in accordance with awill written by Kim Jong-il on 8October, the news agency said.

In a statement, the news

agency referred to him for thefirst time as ‘Great Leader’ -regarded as a clear message ofcontinuity of the regime of hislate father.

Kim Jong-il - known inNorth Korea as the ‘DearLeader’ - was in the process offormalising Kim Jong-un as hissuccessor when he died.

However, the transition wasnot complete, leaving regionalneighbours fearful of a powerstruggle in the nuclear-armedpariah state. On Friday, NorthKorea told the internationalcommunity not to “expect anychange” in the wake of KimJong-il’s death.

LOS ANGELES: Unbeaten US boxing championFloyd Mayweather, already facing three months injail, Friday pleaded no contest to a misdemeanorcharge stemming from an altercation with a securityguard.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in an arti-cle posted on its website that the plea was part of adeal Mayweather had reached with prosecutors andhad paid a $1,000 fine.

On December 21, Mayweather was sentenced tothree months in jail, to begin January 6, after plead-ing guilty to domestic violence charges.

Las Vegas judge Melissa Saragosa also orderedMayweather to complete 100 hours of communityservice and fined him $2,500.

The guilty plea, and no contest plea to twoharassment charges, ensured the 34-year-old fighterwon't go to trial on charges he hit his ex-girlfriendand threatened two of their children during an argu-ment at her home 15 months ago.

Mayweather's no contest plea on Friday tookcare of the last criminal charge he faced. He wasaccused of poking a neighbourhood security guardin the face as they argued over the fighter's park-ing violations.

LIVERPOOL: Craig Bellamybagged a brace and Steven Gerrardwas also on the scoresheet asLiverpool boosted their bid for atop four finish with a 3-1 win overNewcastle at Anfield on Friday.

Kenny Dalglish’s side trailed toDaniel Agger’s own goal midwaythrough the first half, but Bellamyequalised soon after and the for-mer Newcastle striker netted againfrom a free-kick in the second half.

England midfielder Gerrard, who has missed most of the sea-son due to injury, capped a finecameo performance from the sub-stitutes bench with his side’s thirdgoal.

Liverpool are now in fifthplace, level on points with fourthplaced Chelsea, while Newcastleremain seventh after anotherfailed trip to Anfield.

All eyes were on misfiringLiverpool striker Andy Carroll whohas struggled for goals since com-pleting a £35 million move fromNewcastle last January.

With Uruguay striker LuisSuarez suspended, Carroll wascharged with leading Liverpool’sattack yet the 22-year-old had notfound the net in a Liverpool shirtfor almost seven hours.

Pressure had been growing onLiverpool after their failure to kill

off teams at home threatened tocost them a top-four finish.

But they travel to leadersManchester City on January 3 withhopes of securing a place in nextseason’s Champions League verymuch alive.

Just as they did against bot-tom-of-the-table Blackburn onMonday, Liverpool were forced tocome from behind despite makingthe brighter start.

Jose Enrique, anotherLiverpool player facing his formerclub, delivered a delightful lowcross into Newcastle’s six-yardarea in the 16th minute.

Yet the home team’s failure to

make the most of their chancesthis season has been well docu-mented and once again anotheropportunity went begging as therewas no red shirt to turn the ballover the line.

Three minutes later Carroll’sfirst serious attempt at goal can-noned off Bellamy who was stand-ing in front of the Newcastle goal.

Charlie Adam fired high andwide before Stewart Downing, stillwithout a goal since completing a£20 million move from Aston Villain July, forced visiting keeper TimKrul into his first save after goodwork by Bellamy.

He’sbackin styleLIVERPOOL: Liverpool managerKenny Dalglish admits he is glad tosee the back of 2011 because hebelieves 2012 could be a big yearfor Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard ended a troubled 12months by scoring his secondleague goal of the season asDalglish’s side came from behind todefeat Newcastle 3-1 at Anfield onFriday.

The 31-year-old Liverpool cap-tain was making only his sixthleague appearance of an injury-hitcampaign.

Having undergone surgery on adamaged ankle towards the end oflast season, Gerrard has missedmost of the present campaign dueto an ankle infection.

“It’s great to see him get thereward because he has workedreally hard to get where he is,” saidDalglish after Gerrard climbed offthe substitutes bench to score hisside’s third goal. “It was a freakinjury that got him in trouble in thefirst place so the boy deserves awee bit of luck. Maybe 2012 willbring him that. “He is getting hisway back to fitness. It’s fantasticreward for him and everybody whohas helped him to get back to thelevel he is at the moment. AFP

Arsene Wenger has warnedArsenal fans not to expectthe Thierry Henry of 10

years ago if the legendary strikerrejoins the club as expected on atwo-month loan deal.

The Arsenal manager con-firmed Henry will sign for theGunners, for who he scored 226times in 370 appearances beforemoving to Barcelona in June2007, dependent on insuranceagreements being worked outwith New York Red Bulls.

And Wenger revealed it washis idea to bring back the 34-year-old, saying: “You can nevertake away from people what theyhave done, that will remain forev-er. Nobody expects him to bewhat he was 10 years ago, we justwant him to help out.”

He added: “I think it is justcredit to him to be wanting to behelpful to a club that has givenhim so much. Therefore I feelthere is no special pressure to bethe player he was before.

“You cannot put too muchpressure on him. He is here tohelp out, not to suddenly be theleader, the main player in thesquad, and I respect his desire tohelp us get through a periodwhere we lose two strikers.

“He and I are conscious thathe is 34 years old, but he has notlost his class or his brain. Thatwill be just enough for us.”

Wenger wants Henry, who isavailable until the MLS seasonrestarts in March, to fill the sup-porting striker void which willbe left when MarouaneChamakh and Gervinho leavefor the African Nations Cup nextmonth, although Arsenal aretrying to delay their departureby two days to leave them avail-able for the FA Cup tie against

Leeds on January 9.The Gunners boss insists

Henry needs two weeks to befully match fit but in theory hecould be available for sevenPremier League matches, includ-ing key encounters againstManchester United andTottenham as well as FA Cup tiesand Arsenal’s Champions Leaguelast-16 encounter against ACMilan.

On Henry’s return, Wengeradded: “He (Henry) still has hispace, because he always hadexceptional pace. What you losewith age is the capacity to repeatit. He still has class and quality. Idon’t worry about him at all. He isthere to help, nothing else.

“When we need him he willcome on and play. He wants tohelp out for two months, becausethis is a club he loves. He hasexceptional talent, he is a veryintelligent man and has a desireto help the club, so it can only bepositive.”

The hardest kind of love is PetLove because it is a differentkind of love — unexplainableand inconclusive. You can nevercategorise what you feel for your

pet even if you could put your feelings foryour mother, father, teacher, husband, girlfriend, wife, lover, or friend into buck-ets.

I am glad I made a life-changing deci-sion — possibly the only right one till date— of getting a dog in April, 2001. As it turnsout through the thick and thin of my yo-yoexistence through cities, loves, relation-ships, and friendships that have come andgone, along with taxing jobs and unsympa-thetic bosses, Ginger remainedunchanged, unfazed and in my mind, eter-nal. I was certain the dog was born tohaunt me till my death.

Unlike many other seasoned or curiousaspirants, my call to get a pet was based ata very supernatural level: I wanted to getover my fear of dogs because I believed thefear was attached to my mother’s fear ofcanines at a spiritual level. Also, three-odddecades ago, on the terrace of Mona’shouse in Kolkata, while playing hide-n-seek I was chased by her gorgeousand huge German Shepherd. At thetime, I thought the dog was trying tokill me, but later I found that my sillyfriends had played a prank on me —and the dog was also playing with us!

So, Ginger’s arrival in my conscious-ness happened almost 32 years ago, when I didn’t imagine what beauty lay insharing my life with a Golden LabradorRetriever. Little would I have believedthen if anyone had told me Ginger waspre-ordained to come into my life evenbefore she was born!

Possibly the runt of the litter, the lastone peering from under the bed of abreeder’s unkempt home in Bengaluru’sFrazer Town, Ginger greeted with severallicks. So, for the past 11 years and stillcounting (though raggedly now), Gingerdid everything that a human beingcouldn’t possibly ever do for me. Throughthe turbulence of life and its uncertainties,Ginger was the only constant factor thatkept me anchored. When I thought ofjumping off the roof over a betrayed love, Igot reprimanded by her challenging eyes:“Hello? What happens to me then?” Damn! The dog could read my mind. When I pon-dered about renouncing the world andgoing off to a monastery after gettingcheated by some lowly friends, I foundGinger looking amused! “Who cares?Forget them — I am here! Let us go for adrive!” (I gathered that Ginger was clearlynot keen on that kind of a hard life in themonastery). Whenever I ailed with flu ordepression, Ginger would jump up on thebed, exactly next to me, pressing the lengthof her body against my shivering one tocomfort me. If I was howling too much, she

would place her head on my stomach. Well, you guessed it. She wasn’t letting

me die on her for any reason whatsoever.Of course, a dog has to have her own rea-sons, too. Could be the gluten-free chewsticks, imported mattresses, and tinnedmeats. After all, she is a sophisticate! But,honestly, I suspected that Ginger was reallyon a mission to rescue me from the world. She was definitely responsible for me topersist in my career in the toughest of

times. Her look would be unbelievablydisapproving if I told her I wanted toquit my job. “Yeah, and then who paysyour rent? And who feeds us?”

Oh yes, I knew I had to workbecause Ginger was used to the goodthings in life, just like me. I knew I hadto come home at night, because shewas waiting for me. I knew no matterwhat I did or what I failed at or whatI ranted about, Ginger was never theone to stand in judgment of me like

other human beings did. Believe thiswhen I say, there is actually no relationshipin this Universe that can match the oneyou are likely to have with your pet.

Over the past couple of years, I actuallybegan to understand that her philosophyof life was pretty much what we all need tolearn: Keep It Simple. Eat on time, sleep ontime, walk twice a day, enjoy your owncompany when alone, greet everyone withunbounded joy, and whenever you can, seize the opportunity to be loved.

Even now, in the winter of her life,Ginger is a tough one to convince. Shebelieves it is all pretty simple. Thoughshe was diagnosed on December 26 witha possibly terminal giant ball of atumour that is attached to her spleen, which has disrupted her appetite, madeher lose over 10 kgs of weight within 90days, and is causing her some pain, shestill tries to carry on surviving with justwater and milk.

But her happiness in seeing me arrivefrom work is still sky high. She not onlylooks older each day, she is slipping in andout of sleep often like an 80-year-oldgrandma. Yet, she gurgles with joy when Irub her belly or responds as best as she can

when I call her name, like the tiny pup of 6-weeks that she was when I first got her.

Ginger is no longer concerned aboutmy career or money, or the house rent, Ithink. She is happy to see me at home withher today. When I say to her – How will Ilive alone? Didn’t you agree not to die onme until you turned 14? Should I get youoperated? Will you make it if I do? Gingerlooks at me with pathos in her eyes andsighs: “Get real…I’m tired. All I want to dois sleep.” I cry and try to argue, but shegently rests her face on the mattress, andshuts her eyes. She is probably done withher list of things for me, I think. Or elsewhy would she seem quite ready to startfor Heaven alone?

But Ginger being Ginger reminds ofthe list of instructions she leaves behindfor me: Bear your pain or bad day with agood round of sleep; Don’t eat if yourstomach hurts because the digestiontablets mostly don’t work; Be disciplinedand follow the rules of the house no mat-ter what (like I am doing even in thisstate!) even if it means tons of effort toeven totter; Try and get some exercisetwice daily, and for God’s sake don’t wastefood; Like me, learn to be thrilled eachday…for what you get to eat, what you areallowed to do, and who knows what othertreats will come your way!

Ginger, you will probably have to set upa video-conferencing facility in Heaven, because I may not have the fare to visit youup there yet, or worse, I may not be evenallowed to enter.

Besides, we have to be in touchbecause I sure as hell haven’t got most ofthese instructions right yet.

I love you.

I suspected that Ginger wasreally on a mission to rescueme from the world. She wasdefinitely responsible for meto persist in my career in thetoughest of times. Her look

would be unbelievably disapproving if I told her I

wanted to quit my job. “Yeah, and then who pays your rent?

And who feeds us?”

A logo is an intergral part in the creation of a brand. Marketing a product in everyway possible is the mantra and having the right kind of logo is as important as having a good product. We spoke to some brand consultants to find out their picks for the best logos of 2011

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 201118Design

Shiba [email protected]

Alogo creates an identitythat is fundamental tobuild any brand, makes itpopular among the target

audience. Take for instance Coca-Cola, the world’s most popular softdrink. The red and white colouredscheme in the Coca-Cola logo waskept simple and distinctive to lureyoung minds. The Coca-Cola logo, like the product itself, is ratedamong the most recognised logodesigns and brands in the world!

Today, we take a look at some ofthe logos that made an impressionthis year. Monika Rosario, a brandconsultant in an IT firm says, “Oneof the best designs that I have seenin the recent past is that of VowelsEntertainment Private Limited — aservice provider for event manage-ment purposes.” She continues totell us why she thinks it outstand-ing, “I loved the idea behind thelogo, which is simple, interesting, and easy to relate. Without beingtoo ostentatious, it has a strongrecall value and is unique inapproach, that perhaps has neverbeen tried before.” She adds, “Youcan clearly interpret the intentionbehind the conceptualisation andthe drawing does not distract fromthe overall design.”

Santha John, managing directorof JWT Mindset, talks about a logothey created for the tourismdepartment of Egypt. “The visionbehind the logo was to build anicon that stands for Egypt, its richhistory, heritage, nature and diverseculture. After a lot of brainstorm-ing, the makers went back to ahigher form of art — the craft ofArabic calligraphy. An Egyptian cal-ligrapher, used the traditional cal-ligrapher’s instrument, the Qalam, made of dried bamboo.” She con-tinues, “The idea was to find a keyand that turned out to be a “T” inthe end. The symbol represents,“Strength, life, fertility, health andeternity. After that colour had to beadded to the logo, to keep it frombecoming dry, after trying severalcolours the colour of Lapis Lazuli, asemi-precious stone that was usedin the jewellery of Pharaohs wasfinalised— an uncommon blue! The outcome as we see, is the sym-

bol of Egyptian tourism today!”Ramakanth T, managing direc-

tor of RBC worldwide, is of theopinion that the redesigned logoof NBC Universal is among thebest he has come across of late. Itwas launched by the internationaldesign branding company LandorAssociates. Ramakanth says, “Thislogo I feel has the fine qualities ofcommunication, purpose anddesign prowess. The new logo hasdone away with the famous NBCpeacock and globe iconographyfrom the old version. The newsolution is a simple typography, anintelligent clubbing of NBC andUniversal brands. They tried toaddress the continuity with an‘effortful’ combination of Sans ser-ifs with serif fonts likeCopperplate. The new logo evenhas a purple patch as the back-ground.” He continues, “The rea-son why I like such design solu-tions is that they are visually sim-ple and extremely media friendly .It addresses the present and thefuture of corporate businessstrategies. Refreshing and original,it is certainly not a design madefor the sake of it.”

Mahendra K. the director of IBrand, loves the new logo of HeroMotocorp formerly known asHero Honda. He says, “The newlogo of the two-wheeler majorshows the letter ‘H’ in capital witha neat white background alongwith ‘Hero’ written beneath inred. The black colour in the logostands for solidity and exclusivitywhile the red gives a feeling ofenergy, passion, and confidence. This symbol of Hero appears in3D, the logo even has a triangle, trapezoid and a parallelogram inthe first letter of its name. Thesharp edge of the logo depicts thestyle, engineering, innovation andconnect with the new brand.”

In fact, as an executive fromHero Motocorp explained in aninterview to Business Line, ‘Thenew logo stands for the new faceof India and the youthful energyand ‘can do’ spirit. It is in everysense a catapult, which signalsthat while it is deeply rooted inIndian values, it is also poised togo for global expansion.”

So take note, your logo is theface of your brand, choose wisely!

World Wildlife Fund

World WildlifeFund, a simple

pictorial mark. Likemost pictorial marks,it doesn’t have deepmeanings within butwhat it lacks, it makesup for in terms ofbeing a national sym-bol of China andevoking the emotionsof people. Its symbolism also associates warm, adorable, innocent feelings you get from seeingPandas.

GOOD LOGOS make good products

MTVMTV’s logo has a

few interestingaspects about it. Themost important is thatit’s actually designedso that the ‘M’ isinterchangeable withother styles of M’s.

This is relative to the music industry, which is alwayschanging. It’s a successful design in that sensebecause as new trends and new generations comealong, the logo will still remain great in the future.

PUMA

Puma’s wordmarkis great not only

because it is convey-ing the authority, speed and dexterityof a large cat, itscomposition makes itreally interesting. Itseems as if the catwere jumping acrosstall skyscrapers. The typeface used further establish-es the authority and dominance the company has.All-in-all a very consistent and clever logo.

NIKEAh, Nike. A logo so

ridiculously goodthat it was designedfor a ridiculous priceof $35! It’s great inso many regards andconveys deep mean-ings within the simple

abstract mark. A swoosh like this can bring about amultitude of different emotions such as speed, direc-tion, progress, correct tick – the right choice, andmuch, much more.

ADIDASAdidas has a

clever abstractmark that uses thebars to represent pro-gression and accom-plishing the chal-lenges and rigours oflife. The bars whenseen from a distance, can be interpreted as a moun-tain, further reinforcing the previous notion. From ashort distance, they can also look like statistical barsand the progression of success in a graph.

This year saw Apple cement its place at the top of thetech totem pole. But close on its heels were Samsung,

and Kindle. Let’s hope this bodes well for 2012

THE BESTGADGETS OF 2011

Samsung LED 8000 Series TVThere’s a lot to like about Samsung’s 8000 Series LED TV — it’sLED backlit, 3D-capable, and packed with services and apps peoplemight actually use, such as Skype and Facebook. Samsung’s engi-neers whittled the bezel down to just 0.2-in, increasing screen sizewithout increasing the overall footprint, and creating a picturethat’s more other-wordly portal than a TV monitor.

iPad 2After defying critics in 2010 with the

success of the first iPad, Apple wowed usagain with the iPad 2. It has a faster dual-

core processor, thinner and lighter body, and rear and front-facing cameras.

Casio Tryx CameraThe classic camera brick has long been in need of

a refresh, and Casio delivers a deft twist with thiscontorting 12-megapixel (1080p for video) shooter.A multitude of hinges enables it to fold, bend, hangfrom a hook, perch on a table and even flip its 3-inch screen for a well-aimed self-portrait.

Nintendo 3DSWho says 3D is just a

gimmick? Nintendo’s 3DSbroke new ground this year by

being the first major portable consolethat displays 3D images without glasses.

As more gaming goes mobile, Nintendodepends on the 3DS to keep it competitive with gameson the iPhone and Android.

Macbook AirThis summer’s refresh of

the MacBook Air was adoozy: Backlit keyboard,

faster processor, and a newThunderbolt port. It’s easily

one of the best ultra-lightlaptops you can buy.

MacBook Air sets the stan-dard for the new wave oflight and thin Ultrabookswe’ve seen at the end of

this year.

Motorola Atrix 4GOne day, the mobile phone

will do double duty as the CPU ofa full-fledged laptop. The

Motorola Atrix 4G takes a bigstep down that road. The Atrix

would be a powerhouse based onits smartphone chops alone: a

dual-core 1GHz processor runningAndroid 2.2, a GB of RAM, front-

and rear-facing cameras, andaccess to the future 4G network. But the phone is a game-changer

because of its Laptop and HDMultimedia docking systems.

iPhone 4SOn the outside, you may not notice ahuge difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. But it’sthe inside that counts. The iPhone 4S has a zippy dual-core pro-cessor and a camera that takes some of the best photos andvideos we’ve ever seen on a phone.

Kindle FireDespite lukewarm reviews,

Amazon’s Kindle fire is selling likecrazy. The company won’t give spe-

cific numbers, but “millions” havealready been sold, it says. The Fire

only costs $199, which is $300cheaper than the iPad. While you

sacrifice some polish and function-ality for that price, the Fire is still a

decent tablet for the casual user.

Adolescenceis a delicateperiod

Dr Suneetha Sapur

My daughter is 12 years old and I amnot too sure what kind of food Ishould be giving her to meet hernutrition needs. Please advise.

During the pre-adolescent periodthe child grows, on an average, 6-7 cmin height and 1.5 to 3 kg in weightevery year, during the teenage yearsthere is rapid increase in height andweight, hormonal changes, sexualmaturation and wide swings in emo-tions. Adolescent growth spurt startsat about 10-12 years in girls and twoyears later in boys. The annual peakrates for height and weight are 9-10cm and 8-10 kg.

Mineral density of the boneincreases during this period so thedevelopment of critical bone massis essential during this periodwhich is essential for strongerbones later in life.

At the same time adolescence isthe vulnerable stage for developingwrong food habits, the peer groupplays an important role in theirchoices of food. For instance, girlswill become more conscious abouttheir body changes, and try to reducetheir intake of food but their nutri-tional needs are much higher thanthat of boys.

Muscle, bone and fat increaseduring adolescence. Adolescentsparticularly require more energy, protein, calcium and iron along withall other nutrients. Though the rec-ommended dietary allowances forcalcium are about 600-800 mg/donly, it is desirable to give higherquantities of calcium to kids duringthis age to achieve high peak bonemass. Milk and milk products, greenleafy vegetables, seasonal fruitsshould be included regularly in everyday meal. Cooking oils/ghee (25-40g)should be consumed based on theiractivity. Excess intake of fat may leadto weight gain and obesity, so it isbetter to avoid them.

tant nutritionist at LV Prasad EyeInstitute, Hyderabad)

It’s New Year’s eve and a hap-pening party is on every-body’s mind. Foot tapping

numbers, dancing the nightaway, lip smacking food andendless rounds of drinks areprobably on most people’smind as they gear up to usherin the New Year. But so is a nig-gling worry that the next morn-ing could bring a nigglingheadache and a terribly dehy-drated feeling that could justabout ruin New Year’s day. Doesthat mean you go easy andusher in the New Year in atamer fashion? Not at all.

There are ways to keep thathangover at bay and still drinklike a fish. A few simple stepstaken before, during and afterthe party can ensure that youhave the best New Year in town.

Gear up “There are a few simple

steps you can take to ensurethat you don’t have a hangover. Before you head to a partymake sure you eat something ordrink a glass of cold milk. Milkhelps slow down the absorptionof alcohol in the steam.Drinking on an empty stomach

can cause acidity and the alco-hol hits you faster,” saysHemalatha Rathi, clinical nutri-tionist at Soul Beauty andWellness Centre, LLP.

According to Hemalathaeating something before youdown those pegs also helpsensure that you don’t end uppigging out on the friedsnacks as much.

While you’re at itSince alcohol dehydrates the

body, one of the main reasonsfor a hangover, drinking water

in between drinks can help. “Itdoes not mean you glug down agallon of water, but a glass inbetween a couple of pegs canhelp. This prevents the bodyfrom getting dehydrated andalso reduces the severity of thehangover,” explains Hemalatha, adding, “It’s best to rememberthat it is dark coloured drinkslike rum and red wine thatdehydrate the most.”

It is also important to notmix your drinks. Mixing drinksonly means a load of vomitingand discomfort.

DetoxifyA good way to beat that

throbbing headache the nextmorning is by downing a cup ofsteaming black coffee. “Drinkingplenty of green tea through theday will help too. Try eating anegg, either boiled or as anomelette, with breakfast. Fruitsrich in potassium like bananasare a good option,” saysHemalatha, adding, “In case youare feeling overtly dehydratedthen it might be a good idea todrink some ORS, either made athome with water, sugar and salt

or get the ready made powdersfrom a pharmacy.”

It’s a good idea to go on aliquid diet the day after a crazyparty. “You can step up yourintake of water, soups (not theones available in a supermar-ket), coconut water and juices tocombat dehydration quite effec-tively. Also this helps flush outtoxins from your system.Coconut water will also helpreplace the minerals, salts andwater in your body. If nothingworks, try having another smallpeg,” smiles Hemalatha.

Usher in the New Year with asmile, not a hangover. A few sim-

ple steps to beat that headache

Beat hangover, party hard

Remakes not atrend, but creativechoice: Abhishek

Abhishek Bachchan is gearing up for the releaseof his new film Players, an official remake of theHollywood film Italian Job, and the actor feels

that remakes are more of a creative choice than just atrend.

“Players is the official remake of Italian Job. Thestory of players is the same, but the screenplay is com-pletely different because you have to make it for theIndian audience,” Abhishek said. “I don’t think there isany trend. We make a thousand films a year and, outof this, may be four or five are remakes. I think it ismore of a creative choice than following a trend. When Abbas-Mustan saw Italian job, they felt theywant to make this for the Indian audience,” he added.Nowadays, social networking sites are becoming aprominent platform for actors and filmmakers for pro-moting their films, but Abhishek doesn’t seem to be infavour of it.

“Social networking isn’t just for promotions. It is aplatform to exchange ideas and interact with ourfans... A little bit of promotion is fine but I don’t thinkpromoting the whole film is advisable,” said the actor.

Kay Kay Menon, who hasplayed varied roles in filmslike Sarkar, Life In A...Metroand Gulaal, doesn’t conform

to any particular style and says thereis no formula to make a successfulfilm.

“I don’t think of trends. I do filmsthat I feel I can give my best to andalso enjoy. So, I don’t think there isany formula for making successfulfilms. If there had been one, every-one would have been following it,”Kay Kay said.

The 48-year-old, who has beenworking in the industry for over adecade, says the current lot of film-makers are churning out wonderfulmovies, but audiences haven’topened up to such experiments in abig way.

“Over the years there has been a

lot of change in the way films arebeing made. There are some won-derful films being made today, something which we could not havethought of about a decade ago, butthe audience has not changed. Wedon’t get audiences for such films,”said Kay Kay.

“It will take time, but it is impor-tant for the audience to realise it,”added the actor who worked in TVshows such as Pradhan Mantri andTV movies like Zebra 2 and LastTrain To Mahakali at the beginningof his career.

Bollywood is divided into twocategories, commercial films andoffbeat films, and Kay Kay says he isnot in favour of such distinctions.

“People have distinguished filmsfor the sake of commerce. Whetherthe film is commercially viable, it is

known only after the film is released. This distinction is wrong. The indus-try is biased towards money. Oncethe focus of the industry shifts tocreativity from just money, we wouldgo a long way,” he rued. Having saidthat, he is happy with his actingjourney. “I have no complaints sofar. My career did have its ups anddowns, but at the same time it hasgiven me a lot of friends and I havebeen able to do different kind offilms.”

His next is Chaalis Chauraasithat revolves around four cops —Pankaj Suri aka SIR (Naseeruddin),Albert Pinto aka Pinto (Kay KayMenon), Bhaskar Sardesai aka Bobby(Atul Kulkarni) and Shakti Chinappaaka Shakti (Ravi Kishan).

Directed by Hriday Shetty, it willhit the silver screens January 13. IANS

Yet another sequel to hitthe screen this season isGuy Ritchie’s Game ofShadows, an entertain-

ing but largely unimpressiveshow for Sherlock Holmes fans.Especially if you belong to thecategory of those who prefer toremain loyal to the writings ofSir Arthur Conan Doyle.Following the trail of the 2009movie, Ritchie derives tangentand then runs with it. So be

warned, his Holmes (RobertDowning Jr)is not the arm chairbound sleuth who solves thebest of crimes from the comfortof home on Baker Street.

Instead, what you are going tosee is a Holmes who is a martialarts adventurer; master of dis-guises, who can single-handedtake down an army of goonswho displays shades of JamesBond.

The plot on which the movieis based is quite simple. A seriesof anarchist bombings setFrance against Germany.Holmes connects the dots andrealises that they point to a sin-

gle source. A new criminal mastermind

is at large. Professor extraordi-naire, author and advisor to theBritish government, ProfessorMoriarty (Jared Harris) is notonly as intellectually gifted asHolmes, but his penchant forevil and greed combined withhis blood-thirst makes him aworthy opponent. How Holmesbeats Moriarty at his own gameand averts his heinous plan of

triggering the world war formsthe story.

Aside from the explodingtrain sequences and slowmotion action sequences, thebromance between Holmes andWatson (Jude Law)is what islikely to keep you entertained. While it has its moments andthe star cast add their weight ,the movie itself does not live upto the expectations of SherlockHolmes fans. Poor Man’s ArundhatiIt’s been a long time since Priyamani

has starred in a film where she’s thecentre of attraction. In Kshetram,

she plays two different characters; shefights, screams and gets enough spaceto display a whole array of emotions.Yet, the film fails to make a big impres-sion due to a bad script and the lack ofimagination. Directed by T Venugopal, the film stars Priyamani, JagapathiBabu and Shaam in the lead roles.

We are told that generations from aroyal family have not been able to rein-state the statue of Lakshmi NarasimhaSwamy at a temple. Several people inthe family have died every time some-one attempts to complete this ritualwhich in turn will bring a lot of wealthand prosperity to several villages sur-rounding the temple. Chinna (Shaam)falls in love with Sohini (Priyamani)and both of them manage to convincetheir parents about their marriage. When Chinna’s father, NarasimhaRayulu (Aditya Menon) sees Sohini, she reminds him of his sister-in-law Naga Penchulamma(Priyamani). A day after Chinnaand Sohini’s marriage, allhell breaks loose and Sohiniis possessed by a spirit. How this affects her andChinna and why does apowerful spirit possessher forms the rest ofthe story.

It’s a pity thatthe film offers

nothing new in terms of story. We havehad plenty of films like Indra, JayamManadera among many others wherethe protagonist wants to do somethinggood for the society, but he faces resis-tance from some people. In Kshetram, although Venugopal tries to keep fewthings hidden, the conflict point isquite apparent. Venugopal beatsaround the bush even after making itclear that the protagonist’s own familymembers are plotting against him. Nowonder the film turns out to be a bigbore and in a way, it seems likeArundhati, minus the visual effects andgripping screenplay. The only silver lin-ing in the film is Priyamani.

HEMANTH KUMAR

Veedinthe starring Vikram andDeeksha Seth in lead roles is abig disappointment.

Suseendran, who made a rivetingdrama like Naa Peru Shiva, is backwith a formulaic film this time; how-ever, it fails to capture the audience’sattention right from the beginning. Ifthere’s anything whichthis film gets rightthen it has to be givingVikram the license toflex his muscles andpresenting him as theubercool superhero.

Shankaram(Vikram) is an aspiring actor whowants to play villains roles. One dayhe rescues Dakshinamoorthy (KVishwanath) from some goons andlearns that his son wants to sell anorphanage, which is at a prime loca-tion. Akka (Sana) is a powerful politi-cian who wants to build a township

near the orphanage. HowShankaram saves

Dakshinamoorthy from the goonsforms the rest of the story.

It’s been a long time sinceVikram has done a masala

film but except for someslick action scenes,

where theactor

dazzles, there’s absolutely nothingwhich this film offers. The concept ofland mafia has been explored plentyof times in Telugu films and the onlynew aspect of Veedinthe is having awoman play the land grabber’s role.Vikram looks great in the actionsequences and his conversations with

K Vishwanath, whohas the best role inthe film, is a delightto watch. DeekshaSeth has very littlescreen time. Sana, who plays the role ofa politician, is a reve-

lation. It’s been a long time since shehad a meaty role and she delivers aconfident performance in the film. The film’s biggest drawback is itsscreenplay. Except for a well chore-ographed action sequence betweenVikram and Pradeep Rawat, there’sabsolutely nothing in the film tocheer about. Yuvan Shankar Raja’smusic is disappointing. Suseendranmakes a big mess out of this wafer-thin storyline. No wonder the filmseems like a series of actionsequences randomly stitched togeth-er. It’s silly to look for logic here, butyou expect a lot better from a talent-ed filmmaker.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
