The Potable Aqua™ PURE Electrolytic Water Purifier is a miniature electrolytic generator that uses patented technology to convert common salt, a few drops of water, and power from a rechargeable battery into a powerful mixed oxidant disinfectant capable of purifying even the dirtiest water. PA PURE™ is pro-grammed to treat water volumes ranging from 1 liter (1 quart) up to 20 liters (5+ gallons). When treating larger volumes of water, the disinfectant made will be more concentrated, requiring a slightly longer reaction time in the device (about 20 seconds for 1 liter up to a maximum of 6½ minutes for 20 liters).

The mixed oxidant disinfectant generated by PA PURE™ is capable of inactivating even the most difficult to kill microbiological contaminants. The wait time required before drinking treated water depends on the microorganism of concern: bacteria, viruses and Giardia, require a 30-minute wait before drinking, while Cryptosporid-ium needs 4-hours to safely inactivate. These times are based on testing in the worst possible water, “EPA Type II challenge water”, that carries a high organic load, has a high pH and low temperature, and is highly turbid (visibly very cloudy or dirty) – presenting the most difficult conditions for disinfectants.

The PA PURE™ Electrolytic Water Purifier can be recharged more than 500 times via the on-board micro USB port. Each full battery charge will generate enough disinfectant to treat about 150 liters* (40 gallons) of water. The device also incorporates a small on-board solar panel that can add enough energy to the battery in one hour to treat 2 liters* (½ gallon) of water.

With a PA PURE™ Electrolytic Water Purifier, all you need to make your water safe to drink is common salt and sunlight. PA PURE™ is the smallest and most cost effective water purification device available – Pure & Simple.

For a fast & simple video demonstration of how to operate your PA PURE™ device, use your smart phone to scan the QR Code below or go to www.potableaqua.com

*Volumes are based on a standard single dose in align-ment with the EPA Guide Standard & Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers. Treating for protozoan cysts may require dosing in excess of the standard, and may reduce the total volume of water that can be treated on one battery charge.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Potable Aqua™ PURE INSTRUCTION MANUAL 13

Salt and Brine Solution

1. What type of salt can I use? Food grade salt is recommended since it dissolves rapidly and is easy to add to the brine bottle. However, if food grade is unavailable any type of sodium chloride salt can be used (e.g., granular salt, rock salt, etc.).

2. How much salt is held in each salt reservoir? One reservoir, filled to just below the top (so that the salt plug can be securely closed), holds approximately 4 ml or a rounded ¾ teaspoon of salt.

3. How much salt do I add to the brine bottle? Add one reservoir of salt (about 4 ml or a rounded ¾ teaspoon) to the brine bottle to make one bottle of brine solution.

4. What if I don’t mix the brine solution exactly right and the concentration is incorrect?

Some variation in concentration of the brine solution is OK – exactness is not required. That said, if your brine concentration is so low that PA PURE™ can’t make disinfectant strong enough to purify your water, the LOW SALT icon will light and you will be required to correct the problem (See Problems & Solutions Table on page 12) before activating the device.

5. What type of water can I use to mix the brine solution? Any water, including the water that is to be treated, may be used to mix the brine solution. It is recommended to use the cleanest water you can find, but you do not need to bring any special water from home.

6. What should I do if I lose my brine bottle? If you lose the brine bottle included with PA PURE™, you may use another 1-ounce bottle with cap to mix a brine solution as directed in Step q. Alterna- tively, you can make brine solution directly in the reaction chamber of the device by adding a pinch of salt (1/16th teaspoon) to the chamber, filling the chamber with water, then covering the chamber with your thumb or finger and shaking thoroughly to dissolve the salt.

7. How much disinfectant can be made from one full brine bottle? When made according to Step q, the brine bottle holds 1 ounce of brine solution or enough to make 10 doses of disinfectant.

8. How much brine solution do I add to the device? The volume of brine solution required to fill the reaction chamber is 2.5 ml, or about 50 drops from the brine bottle.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Potable Aqua™ PURE INSTRUCTION MANUAL 15

Using the PA PURE™ Device

9. I am using a ½ gallon container, how many liters is that? One half gallon of water (2 quarts) is equivalent to about 2 liters.

32 oz. = 1 quart = 1 liter

64 oz. = 2 quarts = 2 liters

1 3 gallons = 53 quarts = 5 liters

10. Should I cover the reaction chamber with the blue PA PURE™ rubber plug while disinfectant is being made?

No, do not allow the plug to cover the chamber while disinfectant is being made.

11. Can I move or hold the device while disinfectant is being made? No, the device should remain stationary, front side up on a flat surface with blue plug open while disinfectant is being made.

12. How long does it take for PA PURE™ to make disinfectant? PA PURE™ generates a more concentrated disinfectant for larger water volumes. Making more concentrated disinfectant takes more time, so the device cycles longer for larger water volumes (20 seconds for 1L up to about 3 minutes for 10L).

13. Why does the 20L icon start blinking after making one disinfectant dose? When treating 20L of water, disinfectant dosing requirements are doubled. The 20L

icon starts blinking after making the 1st dose to indicate a 2nd disinfectant dose must be made. After adding the first dose to your water, immediately repeat Steps w-t, then add the 2nd dose of disinfectant to your container.

14. I don’t know if my water contains Cryptosporidium, what should I do? If you’re uncertain about the presence of Cryptosporidium in your water and have not pre-filtered with a cyst removal filter (absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller), it is recommended you treat your water as if Cryptosporidium is present.

15. My test strips are expired (or unavailable) and although my water looks clean/clear, I’m still worried about Cryptosporidium – what should I do?

If you haven’t pre-filtered your water with a cyst removal filter and don’t have usable test strips to check for chlorine residual, you must increase the disinfectant dose by a factor of 8X to ensure inactivation of suspected cryptosporidium (i.e., dose your water as if the volume were 8 times larger). For example, to treat 1L of water susect-ed of crypto with no test strips, you need to dose your 1L as if it were 8L, adding 4 disinfectant doses, each made for a 2L volume, to your water. (i.e., repeating Steps w-tfour times, selecting 2L each time)

16. I’d rather buy more test strips than add an 8X larger disinfectant dose to my water – can I purchase more PA PURE™ test strips?

Yes, go to www.potableaqua.com for information about how to purchase more PA PURE™ Chlorine Test Strips.

17. I am concerned about Giardia in my water, but not sure if I’m supposed to use the PA PURE test strips or not – what should I do?

The mixed oxidant disinfectant made by PA PURE™ does effectively inacti-vate Giardia in just 30 minutes. However, if your water has a cloudy or dirty look to it, you must confirm it has sufficient chlorine residual as directed in Steps o-1@, and this requires use of PA PURE™ Test Strips. See the table below for a summary of treatment and wait times requirements.

About the Disinfectant Made by PA PURE™ Device

18. What is the concentration of one disinfectant dose? When used as instructed, the concentration of one disinfectant dose, after added to the water being treated, is 5 mg/L FAC (Free Available Chlorine).

19. What is “residual disinfectant” and why does it matter? Unlike physical treatment methods (i.e. filters or ultraviolet disinfection), purifi-cation with mixed oxidants leaves a trace amount of disinfectant in the water container. This little bit of disinfectant provides extended protection that helps to prevent the formation of biogrowth/slime in the water storage container.

20. How will water taste after treatment by PA PURE™? Treated water will contain chlorine residual to help protect it from recon-tamination and that residual may impart a chlorine taste. The ability to taste this residual provides verification that you have extended protection of your treated water.

WHAT PA PURE DOES & DOESN’T DO

21. What organisms are killed by PA PURE™? The Potable Aqua PURE Electrolytic Purifier has been tested against and shown to meet the requirements identified in the U.S. EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers, destroying over 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses, and 99.9% of protozoa when used as directed. Tests have also shown compliance with aspects of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Household Water Treatment Standard. For additional details, please refer to our website at www.potableaqua.com.

22. How do I know the water is safe to drink? The dosage guidelines and wait times (See PA PURE™ Treatment & Wait Time Summary, page 15) are based on treating EPA’s worst case water so post treatment testing is not required to demonstrate safety when using the PA PURE™ device. However, if you prefer visual confirmation of efficacy, PA PURE™ Chlorine Test Strips may also be used to verify the presence of trace residual chlorine after the required wait time. A trace residual chlorine at the end of the wait time ( indicated by any blue/green color at all on the test pad, no matter how faint) confirms that ample disinfectant was added to your water to inactivate all microorganisms in the specified wait time.

23. Will PA PURE™ remove heavy metals, pesticides, or pharmaceuticals? No, PA PURE™ is designed for microbiological treatment to prevent the contraction of waterborne disease resulting from bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts, including Cholera, E. coli, Giardia, etc.

24. Does the PA PURE™ Purifier filter dirt? No, however it can make the water safe to drink even if it still looks dirty. Since most of us don’t like to drink dirty-looking water (no matter how safe it may be!), an easy method for dirt removal is to pre-filter the water with a cloth, paper towel, coffee filter, or similar material.

MISCELLANEOUS

25 How many liters of water will the PA PURE™ device treat? The Potable Aqua™ PURE device can be expected to treat more than 60,000 liters* of water over its lifetime with no replacement parts. Each complete battery charge can generate enough disinfectant to treat about 150 liters* (40 gallons) of water and the integrated solar panel can transform one hour of sunlight into treatment of 2 liters* (2 gallon) of water.
