Spare Time Interests

I enjoy going to the gym, and I aslo participate in several sports such as Gaelic, swimming, Hurling and adrenaline sports such as

bungee jumping and abseiling. I tend to lead an active life and find this rewarding. Another interest which appeals to me is the art of

drama, I love to express my creative side and have taken part in several productions such as Les Miserable; This hobby has given me

the chance to gain confidence in communicating with different audiences and to build on my teamwork, as I had to work with a team

of people to make the production successful. Also I have an interest which led me learning to play the saxophone; I have undertaken

examinations, which I passed with merits. One of my greatest passions is to learn a language; therefore I am currently attending Irish

speaking classes at University and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Projects

• Redesign the interior of a commercial space – With this project I was required to investigate specific elements of Belfast

and find access to an existing interior space from some of the centres. I had to take time and map my journey around the

space in detail using photographs and drawings, recording the complete ‘interior’. Once I recorded everything I had to start

and analysis how the space is used and how the existing design works with the information on existing material

specification and layout.

Also I needed to breakdown each of the design elements within the space. By getting permission from the owner of the

space I was able to gain access to the space and take relevant photographs and measurements of the walls, floors and ceiling

and existing fittings including lighting and furniture. In my redesign of the space I showed the improved design including

key elements within the interior design, and how the design was constructed, along with the unique materials I had used.

• Design a tensile structure which forms into an exhibition space – This project introduced me to Design culture, history,

issues and discourses. I was able to design and create, using my knowledge from research, a suitable exhibition space in an

open area in Banbridge. This project enabled me work effectively as part of a design development team I needed to have a

broad understanding of the wide and extensive range of materials and processes used in developing a solution for the

manufacture and market.

Attention was given to the design aspects that influence manufacturability and construction, and to the impact on the

solution of the design choices, manufacturing sequences, processes and materials. This provided me with the basic

introduction to the world of materials, the technology and economics of materials, their selection, relative advantages,

disadvantages and limitations whilst also examining their application in design and the manufacturing processes and

parameters used to convert them into real outcomes.

• Design a furnishing for a luxury apartment – For my A-Level project I had to design and manufacture a practical

furnishing for a luxury apartment that would be used to add to the appeal of the luxury apartments by the Seagoe Hotel

group, to help promote a sale to young professionals. Within this project I arranged to meet with the manager of the hotel,

this allowed me to communicate my ideas and meet with different clients to get their views. During the manufacturing I had

to carry out different tasks such as risk assessments, quality control, costing, possible materials etc, this allowed me to

manufacture a product to a high quality standard. Within the local area I was able to source my own materials and able to

manufacture the furnishing with the safety processes and procedures.

Employment

March 2007 - Present

Tesco, Lurgan Branch

Customer Service Assistant

• Currently work on the Customer Service Desk in Tesco, my role within this job is to serve customers who

shop within Tesco, also deal with customer complaints in an orderly manner and resolve any problems which

customers have within the store.

• Help customers a lot with helping them find a product by either searching in store for the product or contacting

other Tesco branches for this product.

• Deal with a lot of customer details therefore I have to abide by the confidentiality rules which are in place and when dealing

with money I have to be trustworthy as I am in charge of my own till and what it contains.

• Gained a lot of experience dealing with the public as at times this can be very challenging, I have also gained a lot of confidence

within this job as I meet and greet many people each day I work.

• Also I have multi-skilled in different departments within the store some of which involve ‘Team Leading’ the checkouts. This

was an opportunity to show my reliability as a leader to manage a team of checkout operators and make sure everything is

running smoothly e.g. Till checks, Daily figures etc.

June 2006 – August 2008 The Jeanscene, Rushmere Craigavon Shop Assistant

• When I worked in ‘The Jeanscene’ I started off as part-time shop assistant although as I progressed within my job I found that

they were putting a lot of trust into me as after one year within my job as I asked to become a key holder for the shop which was

a privilege for me as I was young, but I could see that I was respected within my job.

• I thoroughly enjoyed working within The Jeanscene’ I had to help customers within my role, deal with large amounts of money

and perform household duties which were shared amongst staff. As a key holder I had to be trusted to lock the shop at night and

cash the till with money to be placed in the safe at the end of the night. I also held the code for the alarm which I found a huge

responsibility.

Work Experience

April 2008 - 1 Week Lismore Comprehensive School, Craigavon Teaching Assistant

My work experience consisted of a 1 week placement within a secondary school; I found this an amazing opportunity as I enjoyed

helping others. The classes I taught varied in age and I got to know the students all very well throughout the week as I was given the

tasks of taking their reading classes, helping with coursework, helping within a workshop environment and creating short

presentations which they found a more efficient method of learning.

April 2006 – 1 Week McCreanors Architects, Banbridge Architect

My work experience consisted of a 1 week placement within McCreanors Architects; this was an awarding opportunity as I was able

to work with an architect. I was able to observe how the architect deals with his clients and able to draw up designs using CAD and

Graphite with the measurements and details provided.

Skills

Team Work

I am involved in many projects within my university which require team working skills and by experiencing this I have built on my

communication skills, listening skills, and determination for the team, so work is completed at a high standard.

Communication

My job has helped me develop a skill for communicating as well as university; both allowed me to meet new and interesting people.

I find that I like to meet and get to know people now and I am not afraid to approach someone and ask for advice when I need it.

Project Management

I am a very planned and organised person and I enjoy managing a project and scheduling meeting times for the project to help the

group and myself when taking on a project.

Problem Solving

A problem to me always needs to be solved no matter how big or small as I apply logical thinking to the problem by analysing

everything to do with the problem and the steps which I need to take to solve the problem, I like to take it on as a challenge which

gives me determination to complete what has been started.

Business Awareness

Tesco is a very interesting company to work for as a Customer Assistant, it is the largest British retailer by both global sales and

domestic market share, with profits exceeding £3 billion. I have taken part in many of the training programs within Tesco to achieve

more skills and also learn how to communicate and negotiate better with employees and customers.

Leadership

I have acquired leadership skills through my job and taking part in a team, as many times I have had to make a decision within work

to help a customer, also within a group I have been a team leader for a certain part of the project and I enjoy this as I am organised

and well structured in what I do in order to get something completed. Referees
