ing checked regularly as chain saw noisecan damage hearing. Secure hair aboveshoulder length.

S Keep all parts of your body away from thechain when the engine is running.

S Keep children, bystanders, and animals aminimum of 30 feet (10 meters) away fromthe work area. Do not allow other peopleor animals to be near the chain saw whenstarting or operating the chain saw.

S Do not handle or operate a chain sawwhen youare fatigued, ill, or upset, or if youhave taken alcohol, drugs, or medication.You must be in good physical conditionand mentally alert. Chain saw work isstrenuous. If you have any condition that

might be aggravated by strenuous work,check with your doctor before operating achain saw.

S Carefully plan your sawing operation inad-vance. Donot start cutting until you have aclear work area, secure footing, and, if youare felling trees, a planned retreat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELYS Do not operate a chain saw with one hand.

Serious injury to the operator, helpers, by-standers or any combination of these per-sons may result from one-handed opera-tion. A chain saw is intended fortwo-handed use.

S Operate the chain saw only in a well-venti-lated outdoor area.

S Do not operate saw from a ladder or in atree, unless you are specifically trained todo so.

S Make sure the chain will not make contactwith any object while starting the engine.Never try to start the saw when the guidebar is in a cut.

S Do not put pressure on the saw at the endof the cut. Applying pressure can causeyou to lose control when the cut is com-pleted.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

S Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-pletely and securely assembled. Alwaysreplace bar, chain, hand guard, or chainbrake immediately if it becomes damaged,broken or is otherwise removed.

S With the engine stopped, hand carry thechain saw with the muffler away from yourbody, and the guide bar and chain to the

rear, preferably covered with a scabbard.MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDERS Have all chain saw service performed by a

qualified service dealer with the exceptionof the items listed in the maintenance sec-tionof this manual. Forexample, if improp-er tools are used to remove or hold the fly-wheel when servicing the clutch, structuraldamage to the flywheel can occur andcause the flywheel to burst.

S Make certain the saw chain stops movingwhen the throttle trigger is released. Forcorrection, refer to CARBURETOR AD-JUSTMENTS.

S Never modify your saw in any way.S Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil

or fuel mixture.S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-

teners securely tightened.S Use only Poulan or Poulan Pro accesso-

ries and replacement parts as recom-mended.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTIONS Do not smoke while handling fuel or while

operating the saw.S Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in

the areas where fuel is mixed or poured.There should be no smoking, open flames,or work that could cause sparks. Allow en-gine to cool before refueling.

S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area onbare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, wellventilated place; and use an approved,marked container for all fuel purposes.Wipe up all fuel spills before starting saw.

S Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fuel-ing site before starting engine.

S Turn the engine off and let saw cool in anon-combustible area, not on dry leaves,straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel capand refuel unit.

S Storethe unit and fuel in anarea where fuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electric motorsor switches, furnaces, etc.

KICKBACK

WARNING: Kickback can occur

when the moving chain contacts an object atthe upper portion of the tip of the guide bar orwhen the wood closes in and pinches thesaw chain in the cut. Contact at the upperportion of the tip of the guide bar can causethe chain to dig into the object, which stopsthe chain for an instant. The result is a light-ning fast, reverse reaction which kicks theguide barup and back toward the operator. Ifthe saw chain is pinched along the top of theguide bar, the guide barcan be driven rapidlyback toward the operator. Either of thesereactions can cause loss of saw controlwhich can result in serious injury. Guardagainst kickback.Rotational Kickback is the rapid upwardand backward motion of the chain saw thatcan occur when the moving saw chain nearthe upper portion of the tip of the guide bar

contacts anobject such asa log or a branch.Pinch-Kickback and Pull-In occur whenthe chain is suddenly stopped by beingpinched, caught, or by contacting a foreignobject in the wood. This sudden stopping ofthe chain results in a reversal of the chainforce used to cut wood and causes the sawto move in the opposite direction of the chainrotation. Pinch-Kickback drives the sawstraight back toward the operator.Pull-In pulls the sawaway from theoperator.Either reaction can result in loss of controland serious injury.

Avoid Pinch--Kickback:S Be extremely aware of situations or ob-

structions that can cause material to pinchthe top of or otherwise stop the chain.

S Do not cut more than one log at a time.S Do not twist the saw as the bar is with-

drawn from an undercut when bucking.

Avoid Pull--In:S Always begin cutting with the engine at full

speed and the saw housing against wood.S Use wedges made of plastic or wood.

Never use metal to hold the cut open.

Clear The Working Area

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACKS Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kickback,you can reduce the element of surprisewhich contributes to accidents.

S Never let the moving chain contact anyob-ject at the tip of the guide bar.

S Keep the working area free from obstruc-tions such as other trees, branches, rocks,fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoidany obstruction that your saw chain couldhit while you are cutting through a particu-lar log or branch.

S Keep your saw chain sharp and properlytensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-crease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturer s chain sharpeningand maintenance instructions. Check ten-sion at regular intervals with the enginestopped, never with the engine running.Make sure the chain brake nuts are se-

curely tightened after tensioning the chain.S Begin and continue cutting at full speed. If

the chain is moving at a slower speed,there is greater chance of kickback occur-ring.

S Cut one log at a time.S Use extreme caution when re-entering a

previous cut.S Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of

the bar (plunge cuts).S Watch for shifting logs or other forces that

could close a cut and pinch or fall intochain.

S Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Barand Low--Kickback Chain specified foryour saw.

S Keep a good, firm gripon thesawwithbothhands when the engine is running anddont let go. A firmgrip will help youreducekickback and maintain control of the saw.Keep the fingers of your left hand encir-cling and your left thumb under the fronthandlebar. Keep your right hand com-

pletely around the rear handle whetheryour are right handed or left handed. Keepyour left arm straight with the elbowlocked.

S Position your left hand on the front handle-bar so it is in a straight line with your righthand on the rear handle when makingbucking cuts. Never reverse right and lefthand positions for any type of cutting.

S Stand with your weight evenly balanced onboth feet.

S Stand slightly to the left side of the saw tokeep your body from being in a direct linewith the cutting chain.

S Do not overreach. You could be drawn orthrown off balance and lose control of thesaw.

S Do not cut above shoulder height. It is diffi-cult to maintain control of saw above

shoulder height.KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

tion which throws the bar and rotating chainback and up toward the operator. Kickbackcan be caused by allowing contact of the bartip in the danger zone with any hard object.Kickback canalso be caused by pinching thesaw chain along thetop ofthe guide bar. Thisaction may push the guide bar rapidly backtoward the operator. Either of these eventsmay cause you to lose control of the sawwhich could result in serious injury or evendeath. DO NOT RELY UPON ANY OF THESAFETY DEVICES BUILT INTO YOURSAW. YOU SHOULD USE THE SAWPROPERLY AND CAREFULLY TO AVOIDKICKBACK. Reduced--kickback guide barsand low--kickback saw chains reduce the

chance and magnitude of kickback and arerecommended. Your saw has a low kick-back chain and bar as original equipment.Repairs on a chain brake should be made byan authorized servicing dealer. Take yourunit to the place of purchase if purchasedfrom a servicing dealer, or to the nearest au-thorized master service dealer.

WARNING: Computed kickbackangle (CKA) listed on your saw and listed inthe CKA table below represents angle ofkickback your bar and chain combinationswill have when tested in accordance withCSA and ANSI standards. When purchasingreplacement bar and chain, considerationsshould be given to the lower CKA values.Lower CKA values represent safer angles tothe user, higher values indicate more angle

and higher kick energies. Computed anglesrepresented in the non-activated column in-dicate total energy and angle associatedwithout activation of the chain brake duringkickback. Activated angle represents chainstopping time relative to activation angle ofchain break and resulting kick angle of saw.In all cases lower CKA values represent asafer operating environment for the user.

S Tip contact in some cases may cause alightning fast reverse REACTION, kickingthe guide bar up and back toward the oper-ator.

S Pinching the sawchain along the top of theguide bar may push the guide bar rapidlyback toward the operator.

S Either of these reactions maycause youtolose control of the saw which could resultin serious injury.Do not rely exclusivelyupon the safety devices built into your saw.

The following guide bar and chain combina-tions meet kickback requirements of CSAZ62.1, Z62.3, & ANSI B175.1 when used onsaws listed in this manual. Use of bar andchain combinations other than those listed isnot recommended and may not meet theCKA requirements per standard.

ATTACHING THE BAR & CHAIN (If notalready attached)

WARNING: If received assembled,repeat all steps to ensure your saw is prop-erly assembled and all fasteners are secure.Always wear gloves when handling thechain. The chain is sharp and can cut youeven when it is not moving!S Loosen and remove the chain brake nuts

and the chain brake from the saw.

S Remove the plastic shipping spacer (ifpresent).

S An adjusting pin and screw is used to ad-just the tension of the chain. It is very im-portant when assembling the bar, that thepin located on the adjusting screw alignsintoa hole in the bar. Turning the screwwillmove the adjustment pin up and down thescrew. Locate this adjustment before youbegin mounting the bar onto the saw (see

illustration).

S Turn the adjusting screw counterclock-wise to move the adjusting pin almost asfaras it will go tothe rear. This should allowthepin to benearthe correct position. Fur-ther adjustment may be necessary as youmount the bar.

S Mount the bar as illustrated.S Slide the bar toward the rear of the saw as

far as possible.S Prepare the chain by checking the proper

direction. Without following the illustrationit is easy to place the chain on the saw inthe wrong direction. Use the illustration ofthe chain to determine the proper direc-tion.

S Place the chain onto the sprocket locatedbehind the clutch drum (see illustration).Fit the chain between the teeth in thesprocket.

S Start at the top of the bar and fit chain intogroove around the guide bar.

S Pull the bar forward until the chain is snugin the groove of the bar.

S Hold guide bar against the saw frame andinstall the chain brake. Make sure the ad-justing pin is aligned with the hole in the

bar. Remember this pin moves the barfor-ward andbackwardas the screw is turned.

S Replace the chain brake nuts and tightenfinger tight. Once the chain is tensionedyou will need to tighten chain brake nuts.

CHAIN TENSION (Including units withchain already installed)

NOTE: When adjusting chain tension,make sure the chain brake nuts are fingertight only. Attempting to tension the chainwhen the chain brake nuts are tight cancause damage.

Checking the tension:Use the screwdriver end of the chain adjust-ment tool (bar tool) to move the chain aroundthe bar. If the chain does not rotate, it is tootight. If too loose, the chain will sag below thebar.

Adjusting the tension:

Chain tension is very important. Chainstretches during use. This is especially trueduring the first few times you use your saw.Always check chain tension each time youuse and refuel your saw.

You can adjust the chain tension by loosen-ing the chain brake nuts and turning the ad-justing screw 1/4 of a turn while lifting up onthe bar.S If chain is too tight, turn adjusting

screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise.S If chain is too loose, turn adjusting

screw 1/4 turn clockwise.S Lift up the tip of the bar and tighten the

chain brake nuts with the bar tool.S Recheck chain tension.

WARNING: If the saw is operatedwith a loose chain, the chain could jump offthe guide bar and result in serious injury.

FUELING & LUBRICATION

FUELING ENGINEThis engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation,gasoline must be mixed with a good quality2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend Poulan or Poulan ProR brandoil. If you do not use this oil, use a goodquality 2-cycle air-cooled oil designed to bemixed at a ratio of 40:1 (A 40:1 ratio isobtained by mixing 3.2 onces of oil with 1gallon of unleaded gasoline). DO NOT USEautomotive or boat oil. These oils will causeengine damage. When mixing fuel follow theinstructions printed on the container. Alwaysread and follow the safety rules listed underHANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION.

BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATIONThe bar and chain require continuous lubri-cation. Lubrication is provided by the auto-matic oiler system when the oil tank is keptfilled. Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar andchain. Too little oil will cause overheatingshown by smoke coming from the chain and/or discoloration of the bar.In freezing weather oil will thicken, making it

necessary to thin bar and chain oil with asmall amount (5 to 10%) of #1 Diesel Fuel orkerosene. Bar and chain oil must be freeflowing for the oil system to pump enough oilfor adequate lubrication.Genuine Poulan or Poulan ProR bar andchain oil isrecommended to protect your unitagainst excessive wear from heat andfriction. Poulan or Poulan ProR oil resistshigh temperature thinning. If Poulan orPoulan ProR bar and chain oil is notavailable, use a good grade SAE 30 oil.S Never use waste oil for barand chain lubri-

cation.S Always stop the engine before removing

the oil cap.

Oil CapFuel mix cap

IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcohol--blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisture shich leadsto separation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage for 30days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel nextseason. See STORAGE section for addi-tional information.

STARTING

WARNING: The chain must notmove when the engine runs at idle speed. Ifthe chain moves at idle speed refer to CAR-BURETOR ADJUSTMENT within thismanual. Avoid contact with the muffler. A hotmuffler can cause serious burns.

To stop the engine move the ON/STOPswitch to the STOP position.

To start the engine hold the saw firmly onthe ground as illustrated. Make sure thechain is free to turn without contacting anyobject.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBERWhen pulling the starter rope, do not use thefull extent of the rope as this can cause therope to break. Do not let starter rope snapback. Hold the handle and let the rope rewindslowly.

For cold weather starting, start the unit atFULL CHOKE; allow the engine to warm upbefore squeezing the throttle trigger.

NOTE: Do not cut material with the choke/fast idle lever at the FULL CHOKE posi-tion.

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (orwarm engine after running out offuel):NOTE: In the following steps, when thechoke/fast idle lever is pulled out to the fullextent, the correct throttle setting for startingis set automatically.S Move ON/STOPswitch to the ONposition.S Pull out choke/fast idle to the full extent.S Slowly press primer bulb 6 times.S Pull the starter rope quickly with your right

hand 5 times, then push the choke/fast idlelever in completely (to the OFF position).

S Pull the starter rope quickly with your righthand until the engine starts.

SAllow the engine to runfor approximately 5seconds. Then, squeeze and releasethrottle trigger to allow engine to return toidle speed.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE:S Move ON/STOPswitch to the ONposition.S Pull the choke/fast idle lever out to the full

extent, then push the lever back in com-pletely (to the OFF position).

S Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.S Pull the starter rope quickly with your right

hand until the engine starts.

S Squeeze and release throttle trigger, al-lowing engine to idle.

DIFFICULT STARTING (or starting aflooded engine):The engine may be flooded with too muchfuel if it has not started after 10 pulls.

Flooded engines can be cleared of excessfuel by following the warm engine startingprocedure listed above. Insure the ON/STOP switch is in the ON position.

Starting could require pulling the starter ropehandle many times depending on how badlythe unit is flooded. If engine fails to start, referto the TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call1-800-554-6723.

The chain brake should be re-placed by an authorized service dealer if anypart is worn to less than 1/32 thick. Repairson a chain brake should be made by an au-thorized service dealer. Take your unit to theplace of purchase if purchased from a ser-

vicing dealer, or to the nearest authorizedmaster service dealer.S This saw is equipped with a chain brake.

The brake is designed to stop the chain ifkickback occurs.

S Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics,masonry, non-wood building materials,etc.

S Stop the saw if the chain strikes a foreignobject. Inspect the saw and repair or re-place parts as necessary.

S Keep the chain out ofdirtand sand. Evenasmall amount of dirt will quickly dull a chainand thus increase the possibility of kick-back.

S Practice cutting a few small logs using the

following techniques to get the feel of us-ing your saw before you begin a majorsawing operation.S Squeeze the throttle trigger and allow

the engine to reach full speed beforecutting.

S Begin cutting with the saw frameagainst the log.

S Keep the engine at full speed the en-tire time you are cutting.

S Allow the chain to cut for you. Exertonly light downward pressure. If youforce the cut, damage to the bar,chain, or engine can result.

S Release the throttle trigger as soon asthe cut is completed, allowing the en-gine to idle. If you run the saw at fullthrottle without a cutting load, unnec-essary wear can occur to the chain,

bar, and engine.S To avoid losing control when cut iscomplete, do not put pressure on sawat end of cut.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown after cutting.

TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

WARNING: Check for broken ordead branches which can fall while cuttingcausing serious injury. Do not cut near build-ings or electrical wires if you do not know thedirection of tree fall, norcut at night since youwill not be ale to see well, nor during badweather such as rain, snow, or strong winds,etc.

S Carefully plan your sawing operation inad-vance.

S Clear the work area. You need a clear areaall around the tree so you can have securefooting.

S Study the natural conditions that cancause the tree to fall in a particular direc-tion.

Natural conditions that can cause a tree tofall in a particular direction include:S The wind direction and speed.S The lean of the tree. The lean of a tree

might not be apparent due to uneven orsloping terrain. Usea plumb orlevel to de-termine the direction of tree lean.

S Weight and branches on one side.S Surrounding trees and obstacles.Look for decay and rot. If the trunk isrotted,it can snap and fall toward the operator.Check for broken or dead branches whichcan fall on you while cutting.Make sure there is enough room for the treeto fall. Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 treelengths from the nearest person or other ob-jects. Engine noise can drown out a warningcall.

Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, sta-ples, and wirefromthe tree where cuts are tobe made.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell large trees.A notch is cut on the side of the tree in the de-sired direction of fall. After a felling cut ismade on the opposite side of tree, the treewill tend to fall into the notch.

NOTE: If the tree has large buttress roots,remove them before making the notch.

notch first. Cut through 1/3 of the diameterof the tree. Next complete the notch bycut-ting the bottom of the notch. See illus-trated. Once the notch is cut remove thenotch of wood from the tree.

S After removing the cutout of wood, makethe felling cut on the opposite side of thenotch. This is done by making a cut abouttwo inches higher than the center of thenotch. This will leave enough uncut woodbetween the felling cut and the notch toform a hinge. This hinge will help preventthe tree from falling in the wrong direction.

S Be alert to signs that the tree is ready tofall: cracking sounds, widening of the fell-ing cut, or movement in the upperbranches.

S As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it down,and get away quickly on your planned re-treat path.

S Be extremely cautious with partially fallentrees that maybe poorly supported. Whena tree doesnt fall completely, set the sawaside and pull down the tree with a cablewinch, block and tackle, or tractor. Do notcut down a partially fallen tree with yoursaw.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallentree to the desired log size.

WARNING: Do not stand on the logbeing cut. Any portion can roll causing lossof footing and control. Do not stand downhillof the log being cut.IMPORTANT POINTSS Cut only one log at a time.S Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp

pieces of wood could be flung toward oper-ator.

S Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Neverallow another person to hold the log whilecutting and never hold the log with your legor foot.

S Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs,and roots are tangled such as in a blown

down area. Drag the logs into a clear areabefore cutting by pulling out exposed andcleared logs first.

TYPES OF CUTTING USED FORBUCKING

WARNING: If sawbecomes pinchedor hung in a log, dont try to force it out. Youcan lose control of the saw resulting in injuryand/or damage to the saw. Stop the saw,drive a wedge of plastic or wood into the cutuntil the sawcan be removed easily. Restartthe saw and carefully reenter the cut. Toavoid kickback and chain damage, do notuse a metal wedge. Do not attempt to restartyour saw when it is pinched or hung in a log.

LIMBINGS Alwayslimb a tree after it is cutdown. Only

then can limbing be done safely and prop-erly.

S Leave the larger limbs underneath thefelled tree to support the tree as you work.

S Start at the base of the felled tree and worktoward the top, cutting branches andlimbs. Remove small limbs with one cut.

S Keep the tree between you and the chain.Cut from the side of the tree opposite the

branch you are cutting.S Remove larger, supporting branches with

the cutting techniques described in BUCK-ING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.

S Always use an overcut to cut small andfreely hanging limbs. Undercutting couldcause limbs to fall and pinch the saw.
