CLEAN POWER. MADE IN NIAGARA.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Power of Water Canada Conference – the largest annual gathering of the hydroelectric sector in the country! Over the next three days more than four hundred (400) delegates and over sixty (60) exhibitors will gather to discuss both the opportunities and challenges facing the industry.
This year’s conference program is filled with a diversity of topics that are sure to appeal to the broad range of expertise and interests of our attendees. Our opening session featuring panellists from the International Hydropower Association, the National Hydropower Association and the Canadian Hydropower Association is but one example of the breadth of scope the conference has become.
I am particularly excited to launch the OWA’s new strategic plan at this year’s event – Reinventing and Reinvesting – with a vision that “Waterpower is recognized as the most valued electricity source in Ontario – Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable”.
I want thank all of our sponsors, speakers and exhibitors for their contributions and for helping to make this year’s conference the success I am sure it will be. Your support and participation helps to build confidence in our industry and sparks interest in our sector from beyond our borders. I’d like to thank in particular those participants from abroad who have chosen to make Ontario home for the next few days. I hope you take the opportunity to experience some of this great province.
So, as we gather together for this year’s conference, I hope you take the time to connect and reconnect with clients, colleagues and friends, to reflect upon what collectively the sector has achieved and to prepare for opportunities to come.
Sincerely,
Paul Norris, PresidentOntario Waterpower Association

Concurrent Breakout Sessions
Session 1A: Square Peg in a Round Hole? Energy markets and waterpower development –
Studio 12
Energy markets across North America are being challenged to meet the concurrent objectives
of reducing carbon and increasing flexibility while securing new supply. How do long lead time
and lifespan assets like waterpower fit within traditional market designs (e.g. capacity auctions)?
What market or other mechanisms are best suited to maintain and enhance the contribution
of waterpower resources? Join this thought provoking session to find out.
Panellists: Alexandra Campbell, Director, Market Renewal - Capacity Integration, Independent
Electricity System Operator
Jason Chee-Aloy, Managing Director, Power Advisory LLC
Johannes Pfeifenberger, Principal, The Brattle Group
Moderator: Stephen Somerville, Vice President - Business Development & Acquisitions, H2O Power LP
Session 1B: Competing for kilowatts – Micro-hydro applications – Studio 10
Until recently, waterpower owned the distributed generation space, with hundreds of small
facilities embedded in communities. Scaling down to applications including wastewater treatment
systems presents new opportunities.
Presenters: Bruce Sellars, Sales, Mavel
Loïc Pétillon, Project Director, Ossberger
Moderator: Vince Kulchycki, COO, Bracebridge Generation
Session 1C: From a position of strength - Leveraging renewal of existing hydropower
to meet greenhouse gas commitments – Studio 11
Achieving Canada’s 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target will require substantial
increases in low-carbon electricity supply. Research suggests that a large portion of this could
come from reconsidering the design and operation of Canada’s existing hydroelectric facilities.
Presenters: Richard Hendriks, University of Toronto
Bryan Karney, Professor, University of Toronto
Moderator: Robert Allen, Director, Shaman Power
Session 2B: Whether and How – Integrating fish passage in retrofits and
redevelopments – Studio 10
With and emphasis on the optimization of existing infrastructure (facilities or dams) to meet shorter
term energy needs, the question of whether or how to address fish passage inevitably arises. Industry
environmental professionals and practitioners discuss these questions and potential solutions.
Presenters: Keith Martin, Senior Civil/Structural Engineer, Kleinschmidt Associates
Dr. Paul Patrick, Dr., ATET -Tech
Moderator: Karen McGhee, President, McGhee-Krizsan Engineering Ltd.
Session 2C: The threat is real – Cyber security for waterpower – Studio 11
Governments, power system operators and owners of generation facilities across the globe are
facing the reality of persistent and increasing cyber attacks. Learn about approaches and systems
to “cover your assets”.
