3:00pm-3:45pm Break and Trade Show

3:45pm-5:00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS

PlenaryFast forward to the future: What will the grid need and what will consumers want? Room: Place du CanadaHow will the grid evolve over the next few decades and how will power producers and distributors adapt? Generators and operators across North America and the world are adapting to the rapid increase in penetration of variable renewable electricity generation. A new paradigm is emerging that includes: more complex dispatch and curtailment to balance supply and demand; distorted price formation in energy markets; and ancillary service markets seeking products that are no longer fi t-for-purpose. Hydropower facilities and equipment are under growing pressure to adapt to this new operating environment, as well as address cybersecurity, digitalization and technological evolution of customer service in an ever-changing environment.

Innovation and optimization in an era of refurbishment Cost-effective small hydro rehabilitations typically face a number of unique risks and cost challenges that need to be addressed in order to be successful. This presentation discusses some of the innovative techniques and the commercial structure used in the evaluation and execution of a repowering project nearing completion in Ontario to meet stringent cost and schedule requirements.

• Andrew Treble – Chief Financial Offi cer | Canadian Hydro Components

Prioritization of capital investments and risk mitigation approach to rehabilitation projectsRisk-based economic life cycle management is gradually becoming the preferred approach to determine optimum strategies for asset management over the long term, to undertake business case analyses for life extension and upgrade projects of hydroelectric and substation equipment.

A tool, developed to support this approach, calculates annual cost streams of failure risks and considers these together with maintenance costs, capital expenditures and performance benefi ts, optimizes both type and timing of interventions, using key economic parameters, and balances risk and maintenance costs against capital costs to manage long-term plant reliability at minimum cost. Practical examples of this approach on recent projects performed in Canada, Latin America and Asia will be presented highlighting the specifi c challenges and benefi ts for the owners.

8:30am-9:45am CONCURRENT SESSIONS

What do others think of waterpower? Room: Place du CanadaIt is often said that a good friend is the best mirror. Understanding how other sectors, researchers, communities and experts perceive waterpower is a fundamental (and eye opening!) exercise. While the facts and fi gures are indisputable about the waterpower sector’s contribution to Canada’s clean economy, ensuring that we take stock of how we are viewed more broadly is critical as we strive to continuously improve. Attend this panel session for a frank discussion of how waterpower is perceived today, where education is required to improve the understanding and increase appreciation for the value of waterpower, and how our sector could improve and overcome challenges in the future.

Technical stream & workshopsGenerator asset management Room: DuluthAir gap monitoring systems have been used increasingly over the past 30 years, especially in the hydropower industry, although frequently used in other industries as well.

This session will address issues such as, what tests need to be performed, and why, in order to observe and understand the Units performance and compare to existing standards. Finally, this session will also cover specifi c techniques to analyse rotor and stator dynamic parameters such as, rotor radial relative expansion rates, stator relative radial thermal expansion rates, rotor and stator apparent circularity (rotor and stator shape or roundness) and concentricity (rotor and stator position).

On September 24-26, Waterpower Canada is organizing its annual conference in Montréal around the theme “Accelerating Canada’s clean electrifi cation transition”. GE Renewable Energy is taking this opportunity to organize,

with some of its employees and students from local universities, a Hackathon to brainstorm ideas around new solutions for the hydropower industry. Teams will be invited to solve some challenges on the key topics that will support our industry in defi ning its future. They will identify new business models around some major disruptive trends that the

hydropower industry is addressing or will soon face.
