Power Tong Torque Monitor
1. Description:
The Power Tong Torque Monitor system utilizes two 25,000 lb load cells integrated with the winch and backup lines of the tongs being monitored. The rigging for the system is designed to fit on all makes and models of tongs, and can therefore be moved from rig to rig if necessary.
2. System Functions:
The Rigsmart Systems display panel is powered by 110 VAC supplied by the rig, and programmed to provide the following system features:
Tong Selection Menu – This menu lists a variety of tong types, based on Maximum Rated Capacity and Torque Arm Length. (The user is has the option of entering the Maximum Rated Capacity for any tongs that are not displayed in the menu).
Dynamic Torque Display – The torque is displayed in ft-lb as well as a percentage of the Maximum Rated Capacity of the tongs.
Warning Alarms – The system produces different visual and audible warnings at both 75% and 100% of the Maximum Rated Capacity of the tongs.
Data Logging – When the applied torque reaches a value greater than 75% of the rated capacity of the tongs, the system begins logging the Peak Torque values with a time and date stamp. This logging occurs in 1 second increments, unless no change in torque is detected.
3. Future Optional Functionality:
Solenoid Valve Output – The system could provide an output to a hydraulic solenoid valve that would stop the pull on the tongs above their Maximum Rated Capacity.
Target Torque – A Target Torque feature could be programmed to produce an audible indication and/or engage the hydraulics when a particular torque value is reached.

4. Panel Display and Operation:
The Rigsmart panel has been equipped with custom displays that show the current and peak make-up and break-up torque values. In addition, the percentage of maximum torque is displayed.
4.1. Setting the Torque Arm Length:
- Using the arrow buttons, highlight SETUP and press the SELECT button.
- Highlight CONFIGURE and press the SELECT button.
- Highlight TORQUE LEN and press the SELECT button.
- Use the up or down arrow button to set the torque length (0.0 – 99.9”)
- Once the correct value is displayed, press the ACCEPT button once, then again to
confirm, or press SELECT to cancel.
4.2. Setting the Tong Type:
- From the Configure Menu, highlight TONG and press the SELECT button.
- Press the up or down arrow button until the desired tong type is displayed and press the
ACCEPT button.
- To confirm the choice, press the ACCEPT button again, or press SELECT to cancel.
NOTE: If the desired tong type is not listed, select CUSTOM and follow the ‘Setting
Custom Torque’ instructions below.

BREAK 000ft-lb 65,000ft-lb 0% 000ft-lb 0%
4.3. Setting Custom Torque:
- From the CONFIGURE Menu, highlight CUSTOM MAX TORQUE and press the SELECT
button.
- Use the up or down arrow button to set the maximum torque in ft-lb.
- Once the correct value is displayed, press the ACCEPT button.
- Press the ACCEPT button again to confirm the choice, or press the SELECT button to
cancel.
5. Alarms
An audible (slow beep) and visual alarm will be triggered when 75% of the maximum make-up or break-up logged torque values are reached. The alarm will change to a faster beep when 100% of these values are exceeded.
6. Log Data
Once a logged torque greater than 75% of the maximum set value is detected, a data point is recorded every second. If the logged torque is constant, the data logging rate slows.
8
6.1. To Retrieve Data from the Logger:
- Open the RS Data Logger front panel to access the logger console. On startup, the system will display a message on screen, reading „DT82 Restarted Power Loss‟. This screen will remain until a button on the logger is pressed, however the system will still record data with this screen displayed.
- Insert a USB flash drive (formatted in FAT system file structure) into the USB port. - The logger will proceed to copy data logs automatically, while displaying the following screens:
9
10
- Once finished, the logger will again display the main screen as shown below:
6.2. To Delete the Data from the Logger:
(refer to the diagram on the following page)
- Insert a USB drive into the data logger.
- Wait for the logger to display the message „USB device ready‟.
- Press the „Function‟ button twice, until the logger display screen shows „move data‟.
- Press the „Edit‟ button (yellow check mark).
- The logger will begin deleting files, and will display the message „USB device removed‟
when it has finished.
11
6.3. To View the Data from the Logger:
- Insert the USB flash device with the recorded logs into a PC.
- Open the folder containing the logs.
- Double click the appropriate .csv file
- The file will open in Microsoft Excel
The following section details the general structure of the data in the Excel spreadsheet, as
well as how to format the Time and Date column for easier viewing.

7. Spreadsheets and CSV Files:
The data file name from the logger consists of the date followed by the time the file was
created. The file is in comma separated value (.CSV) format which can be opened up
directly in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel. Double-clicking on the file name will
automatically open up the file in Excel as shown in Figure 1 below. On the following page,
another example is shown, along with instructions on how to format the Timestamp column.
In the next example there are 12 columns in the data file – the first is always labeled
„Timestamp‟, and contains the values Excel needs to create the correct date or time or both.

13
To change the format of the Timestamp column values into something more suitable, use
the following instructions:
8. Formatting the Timestamp Column:
- Highlight the entire Timestamp column by right-clicking the column letter above the
column name (the letter „A‟ always indicates the first column of data, as shown in
Figure 3 on the following page).
- Select the „Format Cells‟ option from the right-click menu.
- Under the „Category‟ list, select the „Custom‟ option.
- A list labeled „Type‟ will open on the right side of the menu, showing different formatting
options for the data. Select the appropriate format, then click on „OK‟ at the bottom of
the menu to set the change.

14
Figure 4 below shows an example of what the newly formatted Timestamp data would look
like. NOTE: The column labeled ‘TZ’ (Time Zone) is not used by the logger, and can
be deleted.
