It is not known how or where Louis Armstrong came to possess a handgun but what is known is that on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans at the age of twelve Louis Armstrong was charged with firing a gun in the air on that night. Louis Armstrong was sent to Colored Waif’s Home for Boys for two years. At the reform school Louis Armstrong learned to play the cornet.
The cornet is shorter than the trumpet. Move the trumpet over the cornet to compare their sizes. To learn more about the cornet or the trumpet click on the arrow beside the picture.
Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong1901 - 1971
Louis Armstrong was born into a poor family in New Orleans. When Louis was young he worked several odd jobs to help support his family, from singing on street corners, working on a junk wagon, cleaning graves, to selling coal. Louis heard many musicians and styles of music as he traveled around the city of New Orleans working his odd jobs.
