In what way does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products

Page 2: Powerpoint q1

Mast HeadMy magazine is called ‘Feature’ the font I got from ‘dafonts.com’ I chose this style of font because it is urban and edgy which suits the R&B music genre of being rebellious.

SkylineThis sky line lets the audience have a brief about what is involved the magazine. When researching I found that these four topics came up most frequent and were most conventional to this genre. I backed the white writing with a black banner to make it stand out to the audience.

HeadlineFor my headline I made sure it stood out the most to the audience.I put the word ‘Exclusive’ in bold yellow writing to connote urgency. The ‘Katie Hartley’ was found of ‘dafonts.com’ the ruggedness adds to the edgy R&B genre.

Sell lines

BarcodeThis is a big convention of a magazine and it is so you can purchase it in a shop

Date and PriceThe date is so the readers know which is the latest magazine and what date it was distributed, the price is so the readers know how much they will have to pay for the magazine, due to conventions these are both usually found at the bottom the magazine near the barcode.

The sell lines are so the audience can look at the cover and decide whether it is worth buying by how catchy the sell lines are, by giving brief information on the cover makes the reader want to know more and buy the magazine.

Main ImageThe main image usually shows the main star of the magazine (who the headline is about) this engages the reader and creates interest. In this case I chose a mid shot so the buyers will get a close up but can still see the artists clothing.

Page 3: Powerpoint q1

TitleThe title of this page ‘contents’ has been wrote in the dame font as the mast head, keeping the theme running through the magazine, also the colours. Red, yellow, white and black are the theme colours to my magazine making sure they are the same the whole way through.

FeaturesThe features include what is involved in this issue so the readers know what is involved, for example, the world exclusive and style tips so the audience are in the know about what R&B artists are wearing and who is doing what.

Social Media The young audience all use social media sites, so it is important to keep up-to-date online using websites and twitter, also the audience can check this for new posts and photos.

Smaller ImagesUsing different images adds to interest as this is a very visual magazine using bright colours, the slanted images adds to the rebellious feel to the R&B genre. Putting them on the right hand side is the first thing the readers will see when turning the page, this getting their attention.

Editors MessageThe editors pick is used because its as if the editor is talking directly to you(the audience) its informal and chatty like gossip, giving you a heads up on the lasted thing.

Issue numberThis is to tell the reader how many magazines have been made and which number you have, it also makes it easier for the audience to collect them.

Showing the magazine cover on the contents page is a popular convention found in magazines, this gives you a reminder and lets you look for the sell lines on the contents page without going back to the cover.

CompetitionIn a circle this stands out to the audience drawing them in and makes it more fun for them as if they are getting something back for buying the magazine.

Page 4: Powerpoint q1

TitleThe font for my title is the same as my contents page and front cover as I wanted them to link and look similar. The sibilance makes the title catchy and will get the readers attention.

Page numberPage numbers are used so the audience can find each section of the magazine easily, the title ‘feature’ is used next to the number because it is the magazines trademark and its easily identifiable.

Long ShotI used a long shot of my cover star so the audience can see the clothes she wears and can get inspiration, its also more interesting for the reader because it is more visual which will attract buyers more than all text.

InterviewA typical convention of a magazine is that the interview is shown in columns, this breaks up the text a bit and looks more appealing than block writing, I wrote a quote in the middle so it encourages the readers to read the rest and also breaks up the text wrote the question's in blue so its easy for the readers to pick out, I also wrote the intriguing parts of the interview in red which connotes warning and alerts the reader.

MidshotI used a larger image so the double page spread looked more visually interesting, the readers can also get style tips, I made sure the artist was looking towards the title so the reader follows the artists eyes and finds the title.

The big ‘E’ is for exclusive, I chose to do this in red to stick with the colour theme and also attract the reader, the colour red connotes alertness triggering the audience to read on, it is also an easy way for the reader to see where the interview starts.

Pull quoteThis pull quote is used to break up the text and encourage the reader to find out the rest of the story. Again I used the colour red to stick with my magazines colour theme.

Page 5: Powerpoint q1

MastheadThis masthead is wrote in bold, red font to attract attention and to stand out, this is ‘Vibes’ trademark masthead. Also the colour red connotes danger and is rebellious which suits the R&B genre.

SkylineThis skyline includes the names of people who are involved in this issue, easier for the reader /fans of the artists to see.

Sell linesThese sell lines are brief and catchy to get the readers attention, also they are different colours and sizes so they don’t blend in with each other.

Social MediaLots of the younger generation use social media instead of buying magazines and like to read them on their phones, consequently VIBE magazine will get popular online if they show their social media sites on the cover.

BarcodeThe barcode is a key convention so this magazine can be purchased in a shop.

Small ImageThis small image is of the second cover , this gives the reader a sneak peak to whether they want to buy the other magazine cover.

Main ImageThe main image is a mid shot giving the audience a close up to the face whilst seeing his body, I think this type of photo would be popular for females as well as males who might inspire to be/look like him.

HeadlineThe headline is in the biggest font, this is seen as the most important story, the use of sibilance engages the reader and is catchy this makes them want to read the story.

Page 6: Powerpoint q1

The header Contents has been placed unusually as the letters have been separated, in big, bold font, this distinguishes the competition as it looks different and stands out as being unique, it also looks modern yet edgy.

FeaturesIn the features section a different font has been used to keep it interesting, this font looks relaxed, the subheadings are in a different font again and in bold letters this stands out to the audience so they don’t have to look hard to find what they are looking for.

By linesThese by lines include who photographed this image and where it was taken.

The V in the background represents ‘vibe’, it is a pale blue colour and layering is used so it doesn’t look cluttered on the page and nothing is distracted from the image.

Main ImageThis mid shot lets us see Kanye West’s facial expression up close as well as she his outfit and the way he is stood, I think that the black and white theme with the red heart looks professional and connects with his album ‘8o8’s and heartbreaks’ with the red heart. The main focus on this image is Kanye, his facial expression is motionless and he is looking directly into the camera which is conventional of most R&B photo shoots.

CaptionThis caption is explaining what Kanye is wearing, the reason it is in small text is so it doesn’t distract from anything else on the page.

Page 7: Powerpoint q1

Main ImageThis main image is taken of Bruno Mars, the blue theme connotes with his stage name ‘Mars’ also in the studio this looks professional and the main focus is on Bruno, a long shot has been used so reads can see what he is wearing and how he is stood.

InterviewThe interview has been done In columns to break it up and so it looks easier to read instead of block text, the questions are in a darker shade of black so they stand out from the answers.

CaptionThe caption at the bottom tells us a bit about the image and where it was taken.

HeadlineThe headline is catchy and a play on words as his stage name is Bruno Mars, this links in with space and invasions.

Page NumberAt the top of the page shows the page number, this is unique to other magazines which show the page numbers in the bottom corners.

Colour SchemeThe colour scheme for this double page spread is blue as the word ‘Mars’ connotes blue.

LIIAR Analysis

L-My magazine includes: Masthead, skyline, Sell lines, Main image, Secondary Image, Hook, Barcode, Date, Price, Main Cover Line

I-Feature focuses on R&B music, finding out the latest artists and news for the younger generation as well and style so the audience can keep up to date about the latest R&B trends.

I-I would publish my magazine to Bauer Media Group, this big publishing industry, it also has an opening for an R&B magazine, with R&B becoming more popular and artists becoming worldwide like Beyoncé and Rhianna, fans need to be up to date about R&B news, what was a niche audience is becoming mass.

A-The target audience is for males and females aged 15-26 R&B is current and edgy, many teens like to keep up-to-date which what artists are wearing, the way the look etc.Social media websites are important to keep the younger generation interested, you can view the magazine online without getting a hard copy, this is easier to travel round with, the younger audience will keep the magazine going online if ever it was to be stopped in the shops.

R- The cover shows the colour scheme or black, white and yellow. Overall I used yellow for certain words so they would stand out and create attention, the black and yellow used together connotes a bee and is seen as a warning which alerts the reader in the same way.

Page 9: Powerpoint q1

Colour SchemesWhen researching R&B magazines I found that these were the colours that I found the most on front covers, red was most popular because it connotes warning, danger andattention which suits the rebellious R&B genre.

My magazine lives up to these conventions as I chose to use yellow to attract attention to certain words like ‘Exclusive’ to connote a warning.Black and White were used to make sure the brighter colours would stand out.
