Scientist in the Schools On March 9, 2015 all the grade 4s had Scientist in the School. The unit we were working on was pulleys and gears. Scientist in the school is when a scientist comes to your school and teaches you about sci-ence! There were five centers: 1. Learning how to calculate the Newton’s; 2. Learning the parts of gears (leader and follower); 3.Learning how to use different kinds of gears by colouring; 4. We are making a gear city; and 5. Learning how to make two gears turn the same way. My favourite station was the fourth station. In my gear city, I built tall buildings, cars, people and stop signs all made out of gears! We had 3 very nice volunteers. Natalie’s mom, Matthew’s mom and Jax’s mom. They helped out the teacher in the centers. They knew exactly what to do and how to do it, like in the pulleys station. Mat-thew’s mom knew what and how the pulleys work. She taught us different kinds of pulleys like the fixed pulley. My class and I had the best time in Scientist in the School. Pleasantville is Taking a Stand Against Bullying! On Wednesday, April 8th, the staff and students at Pleasantville Public School are invited to participate in the International Day of Pink to campaign against bullying. The day was formed after a male stu-dent was bullied for wearing a pink shirt at school. Two fellow students organized a day where students wore pink to stand up for their classmate. Our participation in this day is intended to raise awareness about the importance of fostering a caring and inclusive environment by taking a stand against bullying in all of its forms. Prior to this event, teachers will be speaking with their students about bullying using age appropriate lessons. On April 8th, students are invited to wear something pink to help us remember that positive actions make a difference. If students do not have a pink item of clothing, they may wish to wear a pink sticker or another pink item to show their support of this initiative. We are proud to join oth-ers around the world in taking a stand against bullying!

Healthy Measures: How much screen time do you get?

Screen time in front of a computer, watching television, playing video games or even texting results in a lot of sitting. The average screen time for children as young as five years of age is seven hours per day, which amounts to an average of 49 hours per week! Adults average 55 hours per week in front of a screen! (Van Niel, 2009) Do you know how much time you spend in front of a screen?

There has been overwhelming evidence that prolonged sitting has severe health risks. When you sit for long periods you have an increased risk of more than twenty-five chronic diseases including heart disease, hypertension, stroke, type two diabetes and certain forms of cancer. The adverse outcomes associated with sitting still persist even when participation in leisure-time moderate to vigorous physical activity has been accounted for. The recommended amount of screen time should be less than three hours per day for adults and no more than two hours per day for children under 12 years of age. (Canadian Physical Activity, and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines, 2012)

It has been estimated that each 2-hour increment in sitting time at work is associated with a 23% and 14% increase risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. (Hill, Galloway, Goley, Marrero, Minners, Montgomery, Peterson, Ratner, Sanchez, & Aroda, 2013)

Here are some ideas to help you reduce screen time and increase active time:

• Start the day with some light stretching. • Do at least 30 minutes of active chores around the house per day • Walk or bike to work or school. • At work, get up from your seat at least once per hour and choose walking meetings. • Use the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator and take phone calls standing up. • Take a walk during your coffee break, lunch hour and/or after dinner. • Play an active game with your family such as badminton, bowling or Twister. • Measure your steps with a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps per day.

The following recommendations are found in the Canadian Physical Activity, and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines (2012):

0 to 4 years old 5 to 17 years old 18 to 64 years old 65 and older

At least 180 minutes (3 hours) of physical activity each day

At least 60 minutes (1 hour) of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day

At least 150 minutes (2 ½ hours) of physical activity per week

incorporate at least 10 minutes of aerobic activity each day

Same guidelines as 18 to 64 years old

focus more on activities that are targeted towards enhancing balance and preventing falls

Page 10: PPS April 2014 Newsletter - YRDSB · 2015. 4. 2. · (Happy, Active, Positive, Panthers, Yay) Team, is proud to present weekly morning announcements to promote being happy and healthy

Examples of moderate level physical activity include: biking, playing at the park, skating and walking (100 steps per minute). Examples of vigorous level physical activity include: running, rollerblading and swimming.

By incorporating small bouts of physical activity throughout your day and decreasing your amount of screen time, you will receive the benefits of a more active, healthier you!
