A: (counting the guests) Yes, everyone’s on the coach. We can go now.

D: Now, ladies and gentleman, welcome to Beijing. First, let me

introduce myself. My name’s Jenny, your tour guide from CYTS. I’m

very glad to have you here and wish you a pleasant stay in China. It’s

9:30 a.m., so please set your watches by the local time. Now we’re

driving to the first stop------Tian’an Men Square. It will take us about

45 minutes to get there.

B: Oh, Tian’an Men Square, the largest urban square in the world.

Part Two Situational Dialogue

Very good. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s now enjoy the sights outside.

On your left is our Economical Zone for the Development of New

Technology.1 It is divided into two areas, the business center and the resi

dential quarter. There is three-star hotel and some office buildings

for investors and businessmen. Now on your right---the vast green field.

What’s that on the horizon, a palace?

That’s the Chinese ancient building built in the Qing Dynasty, about

300 years ago. It was used at the time as the imperial summer palace.

What a beautiful view----the green field with the red ochre.

Here we are. This is Tian’an Men Square.

My God. What a huge place.

Yes, it is the biggest square in the world.

Oh, is that so!

Yes, it’s magnificent. I suppose that must be the Great Hall of the

People.2

Right. You may be interested to know that the construction of the whole t

hing took less than a year.

Really! That’ amazing!

Look at that monument, it’s the Monument to the People’s Heroes3.

Here you can trace the history of China from its earliest beginning to the

modern. To your right is the Rostrum of the Gate of Heavenly Peace.4

On the west side of the square and south of Chang’an Avenue is the

Great Hall of the People. Now let’s have a stroll around the square. This

is the world-famous Forbidden City where once emperors, empresses

and their families lived.5

3. Read the following passage and decide whether they are true (T)

or false (F).

Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14 of each year. On

this day lovers all around the world mark this occasion as a day for

sending poems, cards, flowers or candy, etc. there might also be a social

gathering or dancing parties to mark the occasion.

Englishwomen of the 1700’s wrote men’s names on scraps of paper,

rolled each in a little piece of clay, and dropped them all into water.

Also in the 1700’s, unmarried women pinned five bay leaves to their

pillows on the eve of Valentine’s Day. They pinned one leaf to the center

of the pillow and one to each corner. If the charm worked, they saw their

future husbands in their dreams.

www.themegallery.com LOGO

Part Four Exercises

One of the oldest customs was the practice of writing women’s

names on slips of paper and drawing them from a jar. The woman

whose name was drawn by a man became his valentine, and he paid

special attention to her.

In the United States and Canada, children exchange valentines with

their friends. In some schools, the children hold a classroom party and

put all the valentines into a box they have decorated. At the end of the

day, the teacher or one child hands out the cards. Many children make

their own valentines from paper slips, red paper, wallpaper samples,

and pictures cut from magazines. Many children send their largest,

fanciest cards to their parents and teachers.

Part Five Social Etiquette

Bidding farewell to guests mark’s the end of a tour guide’s

services. Wherever it is arranged to be, it is of equal importance to the

greetings and should be conducted with sincerity. If anything

undesirable happens at the last minutes, it may ruin the entire

experience of a tour. Therefore a qualified tour guide should be

thoughtful and enthusiastic throughout his service and try to make the

farewell impressive and everlasting.

Etiquette of Farewell

www.themegallery.com LOGO

Part Five Social Etiquette

A farewell speech, formal of informal, is often necessary. The

contents of the speech depend on very often the special features of a

specific group, but the speech is usually flooded with beautiful memories

and good wishes.

There might be some inadequacies in the service, and it is always

wise to make apologies for the service and to invite criticism for

improvements. Evaluation forms should be given out before your guests’

departure.
