My Practicum ProjectBy: Jen Scott

The students will be able to identify the three different types of rocks (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary).

The students will be able to describe how each of the three types of rocks are formed.

To help my students learn more about the different types of rocks, I decided to make a PowerPoint about rocks.

I went to a rock show prior to teaching the lesson, and took pictures of a lot of interesting, unique rocks, so I thought it would be fun for the students to classify the rocks into the three different categories.

We played a game to figure out if the rock shown was igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary.

I would give them clues to help them figure out what kind of rock it was.

They would hold up their fingers according to which type of rock they thought it was.

The students really enjoyed seeing the different pictures of the unique rocks I saw. It made them engaged in the lesson.

It also helped the students remember the differences between igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary because of their active participation in the game.

By the end of the game, the students were getting restless, and they were bored with trying to figure out what type of rock was shown in the picture.

If I could do this lesson again, I would not do as many slides on my PowerPoint, so the students would stay actively involved the entire time.

I would also think of using technology in a way that the students could be physically using the technology, like using something like Kidspiration.

In this lesson, I was the one mainly using the technology. My students were not physically using the technology, but they were actively involved because they were participating in the game using the PowerPoint.

Technology was essential in this lesson. I took pictures of rocks prior to the lesson, and the only way for my students to see it would be to view it on the projector.

Using this PowerPoint to play a game helped the students to achieve the learning objective. They could see the different things that made the three types of rocks different from each other from the pictures on the PowerPoint.

This lesson would be a lot harder without technology. I wouldn’t have been able to show my students the pictures of the rocks that I saw, and they wouldn’t have been able to see and visualize all of the different types of rocks.
