COURSE DESCRIPTION

Dysarthria in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is primarily characterized by hypophonia and dysprosody. It can worsen during the

disease progression with a poor and variable response to pharmacological and/or neurosurgical treatments. Hypophonia in

PD usually responds well to intensive speech therapies, but it is not always offered to PD patients. Managing swallowing

and saliva problems effectively can have a positive impact on quality of life.

The main objective of MDS-ES 3rd Speech and Swallowing in Parkinson’s Disease School is to provide an opportunity for

speech clinicians to be informed about clinical management of Parkinsonism, as well as to provide the most recent

knowledge about clinical and research aspects of speech and swallowing in PD and atypical parkinsonism.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Discuss the neurological bases of speech and swallowing function in PD and atypical parkinsonism;

• Assess speech and swallowing dysfunction with due consideration on its implications for social

participation;

• Plan a rehabilitation program for speech and/or swallowing impairments in PD patients, considering recent

technological advances and patient-reported outcome measures

• Identify how and when speech therapy can be fully effective according to disease progression and in

association with medical and/or surgical treatments.

EDUCATION DISCLAIMER

The primary purpose of MDS programming is to provide educational opportunities that enhance patient care. Information

presented, as well as publications, technologies, products and/or services discussed are intended to inform attendees about

the knowledge, techniques and experiences of physicians who are willing to share such information with colleagues. A

diversity of opinions exists in the medical field, and the views of the workshop’s faculty are offered solely for educational

purposes. Faculty members’ views do not represent those of the MDS and do not constitute endorsement by MDS.

RECORDINGS PROHIBITED

Audio and videotaping are not allowed during the course. Photography of the presentations and slides is not allowed during

the activity. This includes mobile phone photography.
