• The Government has decided partial withdrawal of central forces from the Darjeeling hill area of West Bengal.

• The Union Home Ministry yesterday sent a notice to this effect to the state government saying that ten companies of central forces will be withdrawn from the hill areas from today.

• Five companies of central forces will remain in the hills to maintain law and order helping state government administration.

• The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed strongresentment over the central government’s decision.

• The population of the district is a mix of the Lephchas, Gorkhas, Bhutias, Bengalis.

• Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has said that the rights of indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh will be protected and they will not be let down because of Chakma and Hajong refugees.

• The Supreme Court had in 2015 directed the central government to grantcitizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees, mostly staying in Arunachal Pradesh.

• The nearly one lakh refugees came from the erstwhile East Pakistan five decades ago.

• Mr Rijiju was speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union in Itanagar yesterday.

• He blamed the erstwhile Congress government for bringing the Chakmas and Hajongs to the state during their tenure.

Defence Ministry

• Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman commissions an indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS Kiltan into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

• A Navy statement said, the country is becoming self-reliant through indigenisation, thus, accentuating the national objective of Make in India.

• INS Kiltan is the latest indigenous warship after Shivalik Class, Kolkata Class and sister ships INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt to have joined the Indian Navy's arsenal.

• It has been designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organisation Directorate of Naval Design and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata.

• INS Kiltan portrays the growing capability of the Indian Navy.

• It is India's first major warship to have a superstructure of carbon fibre composite material resulting in improved stealth features, lower top weight and maintenance costs.

• India has achieved considerable success with indigenous sonarssuch as Abhay and HUMSA-NG as well as weapons such as Varunastra and BrahMos.

• The ship derives its name from one of the islands in Aminidivi group of the strategically located Lakshadweep and Minicoy group of islands.

• Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Shri Radha Mohan Singh said that in order to provide strategic development to the horticulture sector, so as to increase farmers income, a pioneer project called CHAMAN, has been launched three years back by the Government.

• This project is being implemented by Mahalanob is National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC) using remote sensing technology and is likely to be completed in March 2018.

• This was told by the Shri Singh in New Delhi today during a presentation on CHAMAN.

• Horticulture sector is one of the major drivers of growth in Agriculture sector.

• This sector provides nutrient rich crops to the people and better remunerative prices to the farmers thereby augmenting their income.

• It also provides higher employment opportunities in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.

• It is a matter of pride that India is the Second largest producer of Vegetables and Fruits in the world and is First in the production of Banana, Mango, Lime and Lemon, Papaya and Okra. www.studyiq.com
