Living God’s Word As many have said, life is a journey. Faith, too. And journeys take us to all sorts of unexpected places, or else they’re not really jour-neys. Faith can be one of those unexpected turns in the road that make the journey new. Copyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Dear Parishioners, Congratulations to our young people who re-ceived the Sacrament of Confirmation this

past Friday, and congratulations as well to their parents and sponsors. As our young adults begin their high school years we pray that the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit—wisdom, under-standing, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence and wonder—will strengthen them. On the day of their Baptism we promised to bring them up in the practice of the faith. As they become young adults and make more and more choices for themselves, I think we should remember and share with them our hopes and dreams for them. Certainly we desire for them to develop their God-given gifts and talents and to become the persons God wants them to be. We want them to be happy and to embrace the faith we have sacrificed to teach them. We hope they develop a sense of calling and a steadfast moral compass. We hope that they will continue to grow in their faith as disciples of Jesus and that they will be generous and concerned about the needs of others, especially the poor and those who are most in need. Our young people still need to be accompanied by families and role models who are not afraid to live their own faith. May we always strive to provide a good example for them that they may follow in our footsteps.

This past week my predecessor, Fr. Ron Lewinski, was honored at the annual Mundelein Seminary Evening of Tribute as one of the 2017 recipi-ents of the As Those Who Serve award. We offer him our congratula-tions and gratitude for his 18 years as Pastor of St. Mary of the Annun-ciation and his contributions and service to the Archdiocese and be-yond. I learned much from Fr. Ron in the areas of Liturgy and the RCIA and remain grateful for his support and encouragement over these past years. Because Fr. Ron’s work included teaching, pastoring, writing and visioning for the future, he has a unique perspective of the larger Church. He remarked, “I have too many ideas to finish in my lifetime.” He remains energized by teaching and inspiring seminarians. Fr. Ron currently serves and the Co-Director of the Department of Parish Vitality and Mission. He continues to be engaged in ministry as a resident priest at St. Theresa Parish in Palatine. Let us continue to pray for him and for vo-cations to priesthood and religious life. And finally, a word of thanks to all who were involved in the Ho-ly Week and Easter liturgies. I am grateful for their dedication and love for the liturgy. Particular thanks go to the parish liturgy team, Fr. Matthew, and to the deacons and pastoral staff who give so generously of them-selves. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

As you may know, my son Greg and his wife Kim, along with their three children, are Maryknoll Lay Missioners. For more

than four years they have been serving the poor and marginalized in São Paulo, Brazil. They are one of several families among the 58 lay people that Maryknoll has serving in mission around the world. Greg works with the Scalabrini fathers (an Italian order of priests) to help immigrants and refugees transition to Brazil

through services in social assistance, professional and language courses, and employment. Kim facilitates courses in Restorative Jus-tice at a men’s prison and at a youth center. Her work strives to make the themes of forgiveness, non-violence, and reconstructing relation-ships come alive for those participating in the 12-week course. If you are not familiar, Maryknoll Lay Missioners is an American Catho-lic organization inspired by the mission of Jesus to live and work with poor communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, responding to basic needs and helping to create a more just and compassionate world. Maryknoll also has separate branches of missionary priests and nuns. To learn more about Maryknoll and how you can help with pray-ers or donations, visit www.mklm.org. My personal connection with Maryknoll goes back more nearly 20 years when I was fortunate to become friends with Dr. Susan Nagele. Susan is a physician from Urbana, IL, who has been serving in Africa since 1984. At one point in her ministry she was the only doctor for more than 30,000 displaced persons in two camps. A few years ago the American Medical Association recognized Susan with their special Medal of Valor Award for her work in Sudan, Tanzania and her current home of Kenya. I recently received an email from Susan which also contained her newsletter. I would like to share a few excerpts from the newsletter that I hope will open our minds and hearts to the difficulties faced by our sisters and brothers in other parts of the world: “The Kenyan doctors were on strike from December 5th, 2016 for 100 days. The government told the people to go to our mission facilities for health care and we worked very hard to do the work of the govern-ment. The numbers of patients have finally decreased but the cost of food is sky rocketing. The drought has meant the crops have failed and there is less food. There is no butter available in Mombasa for a month.” “Recently a 60 year old woman with diabetes and high blood pressure told me she can no longer afford to buy greens to eat. She only eats green grams and ugali (stiff porridge). She never eats meat. She want-ed to stop her high blood pressure medicine because she came to the clinic with $1 and the drugs cost $7 for six weeks. In another location the people are boiling water and stones all day long just to calm their thoughts since they only have food to eat once a day. The women walk around trying to sell brooms and the men offer to pay them 50 shillings (= 50 US cents) if they will sleep with them. In desperation they agree, even though they know they can get sick with HIV/AIDS.” “Lastly, in Bamba the parish priest begged the owner of Mombasa Cement Company to assist with water for people. The owner agreed and sends his big tankers filled with water around every day. The wa-ter is supposed to be free but the drivers charge the women money to fill up their jerry cans. If they can’t pay money they can sleep with the driver to get their water. Kenya is classified as experiencing drought.

So we are better off than South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia where there is famine for the first time in seven years…all because of corruption and war.” May you and I provide greater support to organizations such as Catho-lic Relief Services, Maryknoll and Catholic Charities that provide critical assistance to those in desperate need. I also ask that you remember Dr. Susan, Greg, and Kim, together with all of the Maryknollers, in your prayers. May each and every one of us make the love and compassion of the Risen Lord a tangible experience in the lives of others. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

Reflecting on God’s Word Sometimes new worlds unexpectedly slip up over our horizon and catch us off guard. One morning we get up, stand at the foot of our bed, look out the window, and oh so briefly think how good it is to be alive; and for a moment we smile to ourselves before resuming the arranging of our day. Or we sit with a friend at a noonday lunch, telling stories and laughing over what our lives have been; and somewhere in the midst of it all we think to ourselves that what is happening right at this moment is worth all the struggles and tears of life. Or we sit by ourselves in the rare quiet of a house that is hardly ever so, and day-dream, and think about what has gone on in this house over all the days and years, and realize that more than living has happened here, that love has, and maturing; and then the back door slams and our day returns to its tumultuous chaos. These are all moments of grace, moments when the shad-ows part if only briefly, and we see more clearly than we ever have before that it’s the very presence of God in which we live and move. Then of course the moment disappears, and we’d like to tell someone about it and maybe we try, but in the end our words fall short. After all, how does one find words to explain how for a brief while we walked life with God more consciously than ever before? I find myself wondering if that was part of what took place as Cleopas and his friend found themselves joined by a stranger on their journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus. How could they not know this stranger was Jesus? Maybe the grace of it was that through faith they came to recognize the Lord Jesus among them, and it didn’t much matter whether that dawning of light came quickly or slowly. What did matter was that it happened.

Easter Symbol: Water A glorious and lovely custom, the origins of the Easter bath date back a little more than thousand years, from the time that large numbers of eastern Europeans first accepted Christianity and were baptized into the faith.

The custom takes many forms. It can be as sensuous as taking a warm, perfumed bath by candle light. And it can be as silly as tossing water balloons on the unsuspecting.

Water is precious to Christians. It reminds us of the rivers of paradise, the great flood and the Red Sea. In baptism we enter those waters to be created anew. In baptism we are led safely to freedom. Baptismal waters are like a tomb. In them we die, are buried and are raised with Christ. The waters are like a womb. In them we are reborn.

Throughout Eastertime, the 50 days from Easter until Pente-cost, on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord each January and on the actual anniversary of your own celebration of the first sacrament, re-member and renew your baptism. Ask parents and godparents what they can recollect about it. What mementoes can you find—your robe, candle or certificate?

Set a bowl brimming with water on the kitchen table. Morning and night, take some water on your fingertips and make the sign of the cross as a pledge of resurrection.
