Take the Sermon with you...

Today’s Scripture ReadingsIsaiah 7:10-16Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high

as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Th en Isaiah said: “Hear

then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Th erefore

the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and

shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and

choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before

whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.”

Matt hew 1:18-25Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to

Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband

Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her

quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and

said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is

from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from

their sins.” All this took place to fulfi ll what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and they shall name him Emmanuel,”

which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord

commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a

son; and he named him Jesus.

Advent: Advent: Joyful AnticipationJoyful Anticipation

Th e four Sundays before Christmas are known in the Christian church as the season of Advent. Th e word advent means coming, and with this in mind we joyfully anticipate both the birth of the long-awaited Messiah on Christmas Day, and the day when Christ will come again.

Th e candles on the Advent wreath mark the weeks of our waiting and one candle is lit each Sunday. Th ree of the candles are purple signifying a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifi ce. But the third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have reached the midpoint of Advent.

Order of ServiceDecember 22nd, 2019 ~ the 4th Sunday of Advent

Prelude Emmanuel

Michael W. Smith

Welcome, Announcements, and Peace

Call to Worship by Phil White Where crooked roads need straightening Prepare the Way for the LordWhere people walk in darkness Prepare the Way for the LordWhere busy lives need stilling Prepare the Way for the Lord Where minds are full of tinsel, presents and parties Prepare the Way for the Lord. And now, in this place and among Your people gathered, into this broken world we call planet earth, into this busy place that we call home, into this fragile group of Your people, into cold hearts and dulled minds, where there is no peace, where people shout in the wilderness, where people walk in darkness, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, O Come Lord

Jesus and help us fi nd room for You in our hearts. Amen.

Hymn of Praise #244, Come, Th ou Long-Expected Jesus

Blessing and Lighting the Advent Wreath From Christian PrayersGracious God, You sent Your Son to be the light of the world and to spread His light of love to all. Bless us and accept this wreath of light. May its ever-increasing brightness be a sign to us of the approaching nearness of Your Son, that we might prepare in joy for His humble birth in a manger and be ready to receive Him at His coming again in glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.Todd, Sally and Max Grange: O Emmanuel, Jesus Christ, desire of every nation, Savior of all peoples, come and dwell among us.

Children dismissed to Sunday School

Opening Prayer Faithful God,You chose Mary, full of grace,to be the mother of our Sovereign and Savior, Jesus. Now fi ll us with Your grace, that with her,we may understand Your ways, rejoice in Your salvation, and embrace Your will;through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with Youin the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

CommunionCommunion

Communion calls to mind the night Jesus broke bread at the Last Supper, and it also reminds us that Jesus’ body was broken on the cross for us. Communion (also known as the Eucharist, or the Great Th anksgiving in some traditions) becomes for us the very presence of God, our daily bread.

Receiving Receiving CommunionCommunion

All are welcome at God’s table. At Snowmass Chapel we receive communion by intinction: you will be given the bread which you may then dip in the wine. Gluten-free wafers are available by request.

Blessing of the Bread & Wine

Th e Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Th y name. Th y kingdom come; Th y will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Th ine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Communion

Closing Prayer adapted God, grant us the grace to be patient and vigilant in watching, waiting, and listening attentively. Remove whatever hinders us from receiving the gifts which the Savior brings — joy, peace, justice, mercy, love.

Christ, You are the hope of all peoples, the wisdom who teaches and guides us, the wonderful Counselor who encourages and consoles, the Prince of Peace who calms our troubled mindsand restless spirits — granting us true inner peace.

In the words of Isaiah: "Arise, shine, for your light has come. Th e glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Even though darkness shall cover the earth And over its people, yet the Lord will be

your everlasting light.” Amen.
