churches to be set on fire with a passion to win the lost. For revival in our time.

Secondly, it could also be understood as ‘how much more willing’ is God than any of us. One of my favourite New Testament verses is 2 Peter 3:9 in which we read of God’s desire for men, women and children to come to living faith. This desire is so heartfelt in God’s being that, quite literally, history is being ‘held up’ in order that the gospel might be preached and responded to.

This should fuel our desire to pray – that he is more willing than we can imagine to respond to our intercession for the witness of his Church, for our Venture and Falcon holidays and for the missional leaders mentioned in this diary. He waits – and longs – to respond to the prayers of the saints.

So as you use this Prayer Diary (and thank you for doing so) can I encourage you to be moved afresh by the ‘how much more’ of God. Let’s be bold, let’s be specific and let’s be confident that God will answer in keeping with the ‘how much more’ that he is.

John Dunnett General Director

n Luke 18 we read Jesus’ parable of a widow seeking justice from an unrighteous official – one of

many insights in the gospels into how we should understand and approach prayer. In Luke’s telling of this story he echoes Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 7:11 regarding the ‘how much more’ of God’s goodness, especially when it comes to prayer.

The pivotal encouragement for our purpose is the ‘how much more’ signposted in the contrast between the unjust judge and God. If the widow’s persistence eventually moves the unjust official to grant her request for justice, then how much more – we are meant to hear – will God grant the requests of those who call on him. And this ‘how much more’ is of great significance as we pray.

In the first instance it tells us ‘how much more able’ is God to answer than any other. Scripture is full of stories that underline God’s ability: the Jordan held back for his people to cross (Joshua 3), Jericho’s walls fall down at his command (Joshua 6), the mouths of lions are shut in saving Daniel (Daniel 6), the apostles are freed from prison (Acts 5 and 16), Paul is safe from the poison of a viper (Acts 28). God is able.

This enables us to pray for what might appear to us to be impossible: for those who reject God to come to faith, for local

hurch leaders can struggle to discern when the time is right to move on from one role to another.

Drawing on experience of supporting clergy through all stages of ministry and the process of moving roles, CPAS has launched On Call – Stay or Go? events to help church leaders work through this and seek God’s voice in such significant decisions. John Coyne, CPAS Leadership Specialist for Patronage, said: ‘These new events will involve each participant working through a series of questions to help them consider whether they should remain in their present context with a renewed sense of calling, or to think about moving to a new parish or ministry setting.‘Each participant will be offered a personalised follow-up consultation which aims to help them interpret the insights gained during this one-day event.’

weekend (15-17 March). Paul says:‘We’re excited to be welcoming 30-40 pupils from Years 4 and 5 to an outdoor centre in the beautiful Ribble Valley in Lancashire. of 846 days of their life! Meetings matter because meetings are ministry. This Tuesday, Charles Burgess is leading a day on ‘Making Meetings Matter’ for clergy in Bristol diocese. The aim of the day is to equip church leaders to lead meetings in a way that harnesses the gifts of all involved, enables clarity and focus in the meeting’s purpose and ultimately helps churches to be more effective in sharing and living out the good news of Jesus. n the mid-17th century, the celebrated preacher John Bunyan first came to faith at the church of St John’s. Four

centuries later and the benefice still has a strong desire to see all who work, live and visit the area come to know Jesus. Situated just to the south of the centre of the historic market town of Bedford, these churches are in an ideal location to reach out to those who have yet to hear the good news. The lively congregations seek to meet the needs of the local community through their witness and service, including reaching out to those who face disadvantage. Please join us this week in praying for the benefice to flourish and grow so that many more people in Bedford can come to know Christ as their Saviour.
