Faith and FirearmsConversations Around Guns and Religion in AmericaDr. Michael Chan, Assistand Professor at Luther SeminaryMonday, Feb. 29; 7 p.m. in the Great Hall

America is in a fight over its guns. And, as isoften the case in American society, religion factorsinto the dispute. Although offensive to some, formany “gun enthusiasts,” it is quite natural toweave together, “God,” “faith,” “church,” and“Jesus” in the same sentence as, “guns,”“firearms,” and “weapons.” For others, faithprovides a rich resource for critically addressinggun violence issues in society. It is no surprise thatguns have been integrated into discourses aboutfaith, for guns, like religion, deal with the profoundhuman realities of life, death, will, power, andfreedom.

The conversation around guns in America, however, suffers from a lack of deep listening andproductive conversation, especially when it comesto talking with those on the "other side." As peopleof faith, it is all the more important that we learnhow to engage in contentious conversations inways that are respectful, loving, and productive. All

Christians, whatever theirpolitical views, have onereality in common: They aregraciously gathered byChrist at the cross, wherethey are both condemnedand saved, accused and justified. Life at the foot ofthe cross, where Christ’s promise is for us, is thebroad reality from which we engage in ethical andpolitical discourse.

This presentation will not only present thequalitative research done as part of the Faith andFirearms Project, but will also use that research asa starting point for deep conversations amongparticipants about the role of guns in Americansociety and the Church. Students should come withopen hearts, curiosity, and questions. Every voiceon this issue is welcome, so long as it isaccompanied by respect.

2016 Youth Ministry Phone-A-Thon: Feb. 21-24What: Phone-A-Thon is a great event where the youth

of the St. Andrew’s will be giving you a friendly callbetween 4:30 & 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21 with supplementalcalling happening on Feb. 22, 23 & 24.

Why: To raise money so that every child of God willhave the opportunity to participate fully in the Ministry ofSt. Andrew’s. This money goes towards scholarships ofconfirmation, retreats, camps, mission trips, and generaltransportation for ministry programs.

With this fundraiser you are saved from purchasing5,990 brownies or consuming 8,557 pizzas or getting yourcar washed 2,995 times. Our goal for 2016 is $25,000.“Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speakingI will hear.” Isaiah 65:24

We need your help to make ministry happen!

Fun facts about youth ministry at St. Andrew’sDid you know: • This year, we have 411 youth in Confirmation from 6-9th grade • The average four-year Confirmation cost to St. Andrew’s is close to $1,000 (covers curriculum,

supplies, two retreats and a full week at camp/mission trip).• Last year, St. Andrew’s gave more than $20,000 in scholarship money to meet the needs of our

financially stressed families and reduce the cost of ministry programs to maximize mission. The need for scholarships and resources is more crucial than ever as St. Andrew’s reaches out to

youth – many who internalize conflicts and anxieties of our society and culture. If 500 families give $50 each, we will have $25,000 to help support the growing ministry. What an

incredible way of showing your support to these youth and their families! Please consider making adonation when you receive our calls – your contribution can make all the difference!
