  • Pastor's Corner, Week of November 8-14, 2020 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

"Time like an ever-rolling stream bears all its sons away." Thus go the words from the familiar hymn "O God Our Help in Ages Past" (LSB 733). We have entered November, the last month of the church year. With it, we undergo a focus on endings. Why oh why would a people forever defined by new beginnings, revealed through the cross and empty tomb of one crucified yet resurrected Jesus of Nazareth, be focused, even momentarily, on endings? Because, like so many things we will gather to celebrate this Thanks-giving (even Thanksgiving 2020!), it is so easy to take the ordinary people and things around us for granted. It is easy to get swept along in the never-ending march of time, never stepping out of that "ever-rolling stream" to consider what it's all about or how we are managing the limited time, talent, and treasure God has entrusted to us. This weekend we will take a moment to do just that. Please prayerfully consider who and what God has gifted to you and, if you are so led, decide what portion of your time, talent, and treasure you plan to set aside in 2021 as a legacy that will benefit someone else. To assist you in that process, I invite you to submit an anonymous pledge during the service you attend. What you choose to pledge is between you and God…no one else will ever know. I pray that this exercise may not only facilitate our stewardship of God's gifts, but remind us of God's generosity and the gift of Jesus "who though He was rich, yet for [our] sake...became poor, so that [we] by His poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9)!

Regarding worship this week, join us by either signing up to worship in person at this link or clicking here to retrieve your electronic bulletin and worship online. Once again, we welcome congregational singing this weekend in all services. Holy Communion will be celebrated Saturday evening (in-person only) and again on Sunday morning at our praise and worship service live stream at 10:45 AM. This week the Sunday morning 8 AM traditional service live stream will stay up on our YouTube channel. You are also invited to take part in our "small group" Holy Communion gatherings after regular services in the main sanctuary at 1 PM (sign up here).

I hope you had the chance to read my letter in the November newsletter regarding the possibility of a post-quarantine worship schedule time change. For all who took and submitted the congregational survey about worship scheduling...many thanks! The next step in the process of putting the proposed change to a congregational vote is to host a Town Hall on the topic via Zoom. The Town Hall will occur November 15 at 2 PM. All RLC members with email addresses on file with the church office will receive invitations to the Zoom meeting via email. Up to 75 people may attend in person in the event that they do not have internet access or are otherwise unable to navigate the meeting via Zoom. To sign up, please click here.

The hymn I mentioned above continues: "O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last And our eternal home!" We give thanks to God that in Christ Jesus our God is our guard while troubles last...and that in Christ we DO have a forever home. As stewards of God's gifts now and in the coming year, we are blessed to be a blessing. Shalom in Jesus, Pastor Jonathan

    TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Town Hall Meeting Announcement November 15th – 2:00 pm

As has been communicated, we have been undergoing a review and possible change to our Sunday Service Time Schedule. The next step in this process is two-fold as follows:

    1. Ask each RLC member to begin to pray for God’s discernment related to the possible service changes that they will effectively move us forward in accordance with God’s Will for the ministry of the RLC.

    2. Provide a forum to review the results of the Service Change Taskforce and allow members to ask questions. We will be holding a congregational Town Hall on November 15th starting at 2:00 pm. The meeting will be held via Zoom or members can also attend in person in the Family Life Center. The Family Life Center is limited to 75 people and anyone attending will need to sign up at www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4dabae2eabff2-rlctown.

The agenda for the meeting will be as follows:

    1. Welcoming Prayer/Meeting Overview – Bob Shimmel (Moderator)

    2. Summary Review of Service Change Taskforce Results* - Teresa Gresham, Co-Leader

    3. Pastoral Comments – Pastor Jonathan

    4. Congregational Q & A

    5. Closing Prayer – Pastor Jonathan

There will be several changes to this meeting format from prior congregational meetings. We are looking to limit use of the Zoom Chat function to only those having technical issues. If a member wants to ask a question on Zoom, please raise your hand or speak out to be recognized by Moderator. We will do our best to make sure all who have a question or something to share can be heard. Those attending in the Family Life Center will be asked to go to a central microphone to state their question or comment. It will then be repeated by the Moderator to all those on Zoom.

Making a change in the Sunday Service Times is a major RLC decision. It is one we would ask each member to lift up in prayer now through the December 6th Voter’s Meeting, when the congregation will vote on a motion to approve the proposed changes. Ultimately, it’s a Congregational decision.

*Copies of the Congregational Survey results and the individual comments can be obtained by contacting Margaret Hyatt in the church office ([email protected]). Bob Shimmel Church Council President

    Council Nominations Now Open

At our December 6th Voter’s Meeting, we will be electing new Council members. The term is for 2 years.

Next year will continue to be a challenging time for RLC as we hopefully see the end of the Covid situation and return to some degree of normalcy.

The Church Council will play a key role, along with Pastor Jonathan and the Staff, in effectively going forward according to God’s Plan for RLC. In accordance with our Governance Model, the primary roles of the Council are the strategic direction and overall financial responsibility of RLC. 2021 will also be special, as we consider the call of an Associate Pastor.

If you or someone you know is interested in being nominated for a Council position, please contact Bob Shimmel ([email protected]). Our goal is to have a final roster with appropriate bios a week before the December 6th Voter’s Meeting.

    Men’s Ministry

Join us online Mondays at 7:00 pm for fellowship and study!

We started a new study, The Gospel of Mark with Francis Chan. A few of us participated in this study during the summer adult education series. It is very good and I am looking forward to going through it with you.

We are able to access the videos through RightNow Media. The church purchased access for all of us. If you have not signed up for an account, go to rightnowmedia.org/Account/Invite/RLCCary.

The Gospel of Mark chronicles Jesus’s journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. Along the way, the Messiah gathers a ragged band of disciples. As crowds grow and dwindle on the road to Jerusalem, only a few stick by the Suffering Savior on the road of discipleship.

In this 11-part series on the Gospel of Mark, author and speaker Francis Chan invites us to walk with him along the ancient ways of the Master. Tracing the steps of Jesus and the Twelve through Israel, Francis explores the major themes of the Gospel of Mark, and asks: Are we willing to take this journey to embrace discipleship?

Please join the Men’s Ministry RCB group to receive the Zoom invite and to stay up to date with events.

We are still meeting for our parking lot gatherings every other week. This meeting is for fellowship in the RLC parking lot. We social distance with “bring your own” camp chair, mask, snack and beverage. Next dates: November 19 and December 3.

Contact Tom Gebbia at [email protected].

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be collecting knitted and crocheted hats and scarves for Neighbor to Neighbor, a local charity. All colors, styles, and sizes are welcome.

Please place items in Rebecca Melland-Kuo’s mailbox or in a labeled bag above the church mailboxes. We will be collecting items until Sunday, December 6.

We have at least 70 scarves so far, but there are a lot of families struggling. For some kids, this may be their only Christmas present. Thank you!

    We Need Your Support

Life For Uganda works with under-resourced communities in Uganda to provide clean water sources, build and equip schools, and provide opportunities to thrive.

In a village in Uganda, there’s no such thing as Google Class-room, and distance learning is challenging when students and teachers are truly a great distance from each other. Because of the global pandemic caused by Covid, millions

of Ugandan children are now experiencing a gap year in their education. In a post-Covid world, support for these village communities will be more necessary than ever before.

Please visit the donations page on our website at www.LifeForUganda.org to make a one-time gift, or consider an ongoing contribution to support Life For Uganda. You can decide where to focus your giving - schools, wells, mission team support, or our general fund. Your donation is tax deductible and you will receive a receipt.

Thank you for your support. Your generous giving makes a huge and positive impact on so many lives.

Would you like to help provide presents for children in need this Christmas?

The Christmas Store provides financially-challenged parents with an appointment to choose free toys for their children, age 14 and under. Families living in Apex, Holly Springs, Willow Spring, Cary, Fuquay- Varina, Morrisville, or New Hill are referred by local aid organizations or school counselors.

We are looking forward to partnering with the Christmas Store again this year from November 8-29!

Unfortunately here at Resurrection, we will not have our Christmas trees full of tags up this year and will be limiting collection days to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 am-3:00 pm through the church office. You may also bring your items to worship if you are coming in person.

This year due to the pandemic, the best way to help stock the Christmas Store is by purchasing toys online at your favorite retailer and having them delivered directly to New Horizons Fellowship at 820 E. Williams St., Apex NC 27502.

    TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

November 5, 2020 Dear Resurrection Parents,

The 2021-2022 re-enrollment period for returning Resurrection Lutheran School students and their siblings will begin on Monday, November 9, 2020. It is our expectation that RLS will reach maximum capacity, consequently it is important that you re-enroll as soon as possible. You will have until December 11, 2020 to reserve a spot in your student’s class. After December 11, 2020, enrollment will open to the public.

We have all been blessed by our school community in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. While we could never have anticipated the impact Covid-19 would have on education, our Healthy Together Plan has made it possible for Resurrection Lutheran School to offer an in person academic experience for families in Wake County and surrounding areas. Whether you are a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church or active in your own congregation, we recognize and value your commitment to Resurrection Lutheran School. To that end, a decision has been made to unify tuition for all families moving forward. Annual Tuition for 2021-2022 is $8,450 and the Enrollment Fee ($150 per student)/Curriculum Fee ($400 per student *maximum $800 per family) remain unchanged. RLS is committed to providing an affordable Christ-centered, academically focused educational experience for children in junior kindergarten through eighth grade.

If you have indicated on the recent survey that you plan to enroll your child/ren for the 2021-2022 school year, please submit an Enrollment Fee of $150 per student by December 11, 2020. This will initiate the enrollment process and ensure that your child’s spot is reserved. Additionally, you are invited to complete sibling applications for review at this time. Click here to apply.

Enrolled families will receive a Resurrection Lutheran School Enrollment Agreement for the 2021-2022 academic year via US mail in early January. The signed Enrollment Agreement and non-refundable deposit of 10% will be due on February 11, 2021.

If you plan to apply for financial aid or the Multi-Child Aid Program (MCAP), we would encourage you to visit www.rlscary.org/admissions/affording-resurrection to begin the application process as soon as possible. Please note, families applying for aid will not receive an enrollment packet until an award has been determined. However, you will still need to submit the Enrollment Fee to reserve your spot.

As you make your decision for next year, please keep in mind that staffing, curriculum and programming all rely on our projected enrollment. In addition, social distancing protocols may continue to impact class size limitations. Consequently, your timely response will greatly benefit our ability to meet the needs of the community at large.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the re-enrollment or new student application process, please contact [email protected].

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are incredibly thankful for YOU! Peace, Tom Kolb, Principal and the RLS Admin Team
