Praying for Revival!

And let me tell you there are people who are

hungering and thirsting to hear this good news of

God in Jesus Christ and those for whom Our

Savior’s is just the place to experience the faith.

We have a church where you don’t have to check

your mind at the door. We aren’t afraid of science

or scientific inquiry. We aren’t afraid to look at the

Bible and Christian tradition with a critical eye and

ask questions that are important to us and to our

world. We allow people to integrate their faith and

their daily lives in ways that are intellectually

honest. We proclaim a loving God who in Jesus

Christ has come to save the world and offer life and

life abundantly---not scare us into end times hysteria

or compel us to circle the wagons and shut ourselves

off from the world. We are honest about our own

brokenness and the reality that all of us fall short of

the glory of God and because of this we rejoice with

the angels and archangels and with all the company

of heaven about God’s love for us and the fact that

while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.

We have good news to share my friends! Too many

of us have fallen for the lie that faith is simply an

intellectual agreement to a theological proposition.

Faith is meant to drive us into the streets, into the

town squares, into the marketplaces as we proclaim

Jesus in word and deed! Faith should fill us with

laughter and joy for the goodness of God and with

tears and lament for the brokenness of God’s world.

Faith should drive us out and then call us back with

others in tow to hear the word and be nurtured with

the presence of Christ! Pray with me for a revival

here at Our Savior’s! Pray with me that the Holy

Spirit might grace us with an outpouring of love and

passion for God and for God’s world. Pray with me

that people might come to know God’s love through

what we do here together! Amen! Come Holy

Spirit!

Peace!

Pastor Jeff

On June 8th we celebrate the day of Pentecost. You

can read the story for yourself in the Acts of the

Apostles 2.1-21. It’s one of those great Bible stories

where while meeting together in a room suddenly the

presence of the Holy Spirit perceived to be as a great

wind and looking like little flames dancing around

the heads of the followers of Jesus makes itself

known! The result is that the Good News of Jesus is

proclaimed so that everyone hears in their own native

language and some 3000 folks are added as followers

of Jesus on that day! What I love about the story is

what is implied. You see we are told that the

disciples are all together in a room when the

Pentecost event begins. But then we hear that folks

from all over the world who were in Jerusalem for the

festival began to hear them speaking in their own

native tongue. And of course Peter seems to stand up

in the midst of it all and after he is done with his

Pentecost speech the aforementioned 3,000 are added

to the believers. What is implied is that there was

movement!

You see there’s no way that those first followers

could have stayed in the room or even the building in

which they were meeting. It’s simply impossible.

They most have moved outside! They most have

gone into the streets! They most have been in the

public areas where all these visitors could have heard

the proclamation and where Peter could have stood

up and accommodated the many thousands who

listened to him. Remember 3,000 came to faith and

we can only guess on how many thousands didn’t.

What is implied is that the faith of these followers of

Jesus compelled them to go out! To go to where the

people where and to speak about the good news they

had encountered in this one called Jesus. It seems to

me that is exactly what we need to happen today. We

need to go out! We need to stop being so shy about

our faith, about our church and about our ministry

and share the good news with others. We need a

revival!

Lutheran Immigration and

Refugee Service (LIRS)

Celebrates 75 years!

This year marks the 75th anniversary of LIRS’s ministries of service

and justice. Initially sparked by concern for European Lutherans

displaced by WWII, LIRS is sustained by God’s call to love the

sojourner and honed by decades of human care for people uprooted

by war, persecution, violence, family separation and human

trafficking. There are 30 million displaced people in the world and

about 10.4 million are refugees, meaning that they have crossed an

international border for safety. About half of all refugees spend at

least 5 years in a refugee camp and many are children with no

parents or adults to accompany them. The United States resettles

about 70,000 refugees a year and LIRS helps about 10,000 of them!

We are a part of a bigger church and a portion of your offering

dollars go to support the good work of organizations like LIRS!

You can find out more by visiting www.lirs.org

Music Notes

Our program year ended at the end of May and many

of our activities will be on hiatus for the summer.

The work of “the church” however, is 24/7, 365 days

a year. Many thanks to our Kids’ Choirs, Bell

Choirs and Celebration Singers for providing great

music for worship throughout this past year. You

can look forward to seeing them back in the fall.

I am also looking forward to the musical offerings

that will be brought by our soloists, ensembles,

worship leaders and instrumentalists throughout the

summer. We have an amazing group of talented

musicians lined up to lead us in song as we praise

God in worship this summer. The program year may

have ended but our musicians consistently offer their

time and talents to our music ministry. I am thankful

to work with such a talented, faithful group.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a great theologian said, “It is

the voice of the Church that is heard in singing

together. It is not you than sings, it is the Church

that is singing, and you, as a member of the Church,

may share in its song.”

I look forward to sharing the Church’s song with you

this summer.

In His Service

Karen Skipper,

Director of Music

Music Ministry Changes

We are delighted to welcome Phil Silas as our

new worship leader for 8:30am worship on

Sunday morning. Phil will begin on Sunday,

June 15th. Phil brings years of experience as a

worship leader and is an award winning

producer, composer, singer and musician who

has worked with both Christian and secular

artists. As Phil begins to establish his worship

team he is interested in auditioning anyone who

has talent as a vocalist, instrumentalist or in the

worship arts (technology, media, art). He is

especially interested in any of our teens or young

adults who have skills they can share! Call the

church office for contact information.

We will say goodbye to Stephanie as her last

worship day with Our Savior’s will be on June

8th. We are currently looking for a pianist/

accompanist to serve as our main instrumentalist

for 10:30am worship and serve as our

accompanist during choir season. If you know

of someone with great talent who might be a

good fit please share the world. They can

contact Karen Skipper for more information.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Here we are in June already, didn’t school just start?

Didn’t we just celebrate the birth of our Savior? How

does it get to be June so fast? We have had a wonderful

program year here in the OSLC Youth Ministry! Our

Wednesday evening kids program, J.A.M. (Jesus and

Me) has been such a blessing, seeing those little faces

light up as they learn about the love of Jesus and how it

applies to them. Our 5th grade confirmation students

have really impressed me this year as well with their

commitment and interest, they really like to go deeply

into the lessons and have been eager to gain insight, and

it has been wonderful to be a part of it.

The middle school group just keeps getting crazier and

crazier! Some nights we have to sit kids on the floor

because we have run out of couch space (and there is a

LOT of couch space) and that is wonderful, middle

school can be a difficult transition for some kids and I

am glad that they see our group as a way to stay

surrounded by like-minded friends and connect with

their faith.

Our high school group had another wonderful “Tacos

and Talent” fundraiser that will help fund our summer

trip to the Western States Youth Gathering to be held at

the end of June. A big thank you to all of those involved

with making this event happen, from the cooks in the

kitchen, decorations, technical team, stage crew, talent,

salsa makers, and of course those in attendance who so

generously donated to the cause, the youth of OSLC

thank you.

June is the month of transition which is also good,

preschoolers become kindergarteners, kindergarteners

become elementary schoolers, elementary schoolers

become middle schoolers, middle schoolers become

high schoolers, high schoolers become college students

or enter on a career path, and all the while parents say

“where did the time go?” It’s all just as has always been

and just as it should be; even if it makes us a little sad

to see them grow up.

One last reminder, our middle and high school groups

meet all through the summer and once a youth has

graduated 8th grade they may begin attending the high

school group and once a youth has graduated the 5th

grade they may attend the middle school group, hope

to see the kids in their new groups in late June.

So here’s to a great year and looking forward to a

fantastic summer! Remember, friends are ALWAYS

welcome!

Alooooha!

"Ono good grinds, bruddah", said Big Kahuna as he

walked out the kitchen door after another successful

and scrumptious Kane Breakfast this past month.

This was no haole mainland feast, the menu was

straight from the back roads of Waikiki on the

leeward side of the Hawaiian Island of

Oahu. Rainbow Drive-In to be specific. What grinds

did we offer?

Eggs - any style as long as it was scrambled.

Portuguese Sausage - also called linguica - watch

out for the hot ones!

Spam - no Hawaiian breakfast is complete

without it.

White rice - made perfectly sticky in a rice

cooker.

Fried rice - my wife says it's better than any

Chinese restaurant - want to know the

secret? Day old extra long grain white rice. Yep,

have to make it the day before you prepare the

fried rice.

Sriracha Hot Sauce – Spicy Vietnamese hot sauce

(made in Irwindale, CA). You may have heard of

them in the news. Local residents don’t think it is

so “hot” when the company prepares the peppers

and filling the air with eye watering vapors.

King's Hawaiian Sweet Rolls - imported straight

from their factory in Torrance, CA.

Pineapple and Mango fruit salad. So tropical.

POG Juice - Shig's special recipe of pineapple,

orange and guava delicately blended into fruit

juice nirvana.

Gravy - when ordering at the Rainbow Drive-In,

you say "Gravy all over." The men were

concerned about the cholesterol impact of beef

gravy on their already meaty breakfast. No fear,

there were no animal products used in the making

of the gravy. Another secret of the Rainbow

Drive-In.

Oh, another secret ingredient at the Men's Breakfast is

there every time we meet. Ono good fellowship. Our

time together, whether arriving at 6am to help cook,

or arriving just in time for the discussion, is valued

by all who attend. A great casual gathering with a

cross section of the OSLC men. New members and

long time members all come together to share time,

stories, viewpoints, ono good grinds and fellowship.

For those not sure of the words used in the

article: Ono good grinds means good food. Kane

means men. Haole is derogatory for a person not of

Hawaiian decent. This is Hawaiian Pidgin, a local

dialect used throughout the Hawaiian islands. There

is a wall at the Jordan river, where baptisms are

performed, that has Mark 1:9-11 in many languages,

including Pidgin. See if you can recognize it:

“Dat time, Jesus come from Nazaret town, Galilee

side, an John wen baptize him inside da Jordan

River. Right den Jesus wen come up outa da water.

An you know wat? Jesus wen see da sky broke open,

an wen spock Godʼs Spirit coming down on top him,

jalike one dove. An wow! Had one voice from da sky

wen say, “You my boy! I really get love an aloha fo

you, an I stay good inside cuz a you!”

Mark 1:9-11

Getting back to the Kane Breakfast in May, the Big

Kahuna lead us in a discussion about Abigail, Nabal

and David from 1 Samuel and it was another passage

from the Bible that few of us we familiar with or had

heard before. This is what I personally enjoy about

the Men's Breakfast. Pastor Jeff seeks out the hidden

gems that are lesser known, good narratives and

applicable to our current lives.

How can something written 1000 years before Christ

was born apply to your life today? What culinary

experience will be offered next? Come and join us

June 14th at 7am to 8:30am to find out. We meet in

the Church Kitchen.

Seeking a Digital Native

If you are a digital native with a

desire to help Our Savior’s Lutheran

Church stay connected in the cyber world of

Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and

Pinterest. If you know what I mean by SoLoMo

Networks and have run across “Highlight”, “Ban.jo”

and ”Roamz” then you just might be an answer to

prayer! If you think it would be fun to keep the Our

Savior’s community more connected via social

media and look at how digital community can help

us to inspire others to love, encourage them to think

and send them out to serve, then Pastor Jeff wants to

talk with you. Sound interesting? Let’s talk!

We would like to

thank everyone for

having had the

opportunity to serve

as delegates to the

2014 Assembly of

the Pacifica Synod.

As you may know

this Assembly was held in Waikiki, Hawaii and

hosted by the Hukilau Conference. The Aloha

Spirit began at Registration and continued

throughout the Assembly.

We were blessed to be in the company of Pastor Jeff,

a true leader and a fantastic travel partner. Thank

you Pastor Jeff for showing us the way, sharing

great meals, oh, and of course attending worship,

assembly business meetings and an outing to a local

congregation and then on to the Plantation Village

where we learned about life on an early sugar

plantation.

We were fortunate to be able to listen to several

inspirational speakers, including the Presiding

Bishop of the ELCA, Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton.

Bishop Eaton was elected to her position at the 2013

ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Expect good things

to happen in the ELCA with this dynamic new

Bishop.

Serving as a delegate is a humbling experience.

Again, our thanks and Aloha,

Next council meeting ~ June 10 at 6:30pm

Hello my friends in

Christ. How did you

like the new time and

talent survey? Striking

tri fold is it not? Special thanks to Sharon for all her

creativity. In addition to choosing the traditional in-

dividual things that you are willing to do for the

church, the form also asks your opinion about what

do you want to see at your church and what interests

you. What are some things that are missing at OSLC

and can we possibly make them happen. This may be

an event that you remember from another church or

something new that you think is worthwhile. Let us

know your thoughts and we can consider making

them happen. Also this may be the ideal place to just

state that I will help throughout the year from time to

time as the needs arise. It may be doing something

special for the Christmas dinner that requires an hour

or two, or running an errand on short notice. You can

simple state “call me when needed for a short term

event or need.”

Sometimes we do need specific talents. We have a

section that lets you tell us what your strengths are,

accounting, seamstress, plumbing etc. In addition it

also asks you to specify what you care about the

most. This will help us to spend our time in areas that

have a greater importance to the congregation.

We are hoping to have an abundant amount turned in

by the annual meeting, June 8th. Please help us meet

our expectation. You can turn it in at the meeting,

connections table, offering plate, to the office or even

scan and e-mail it. We are easy. Remembering an

I want to thank the

congregation for allowing

me to be principal of this

wonderful school. It is a

great joy to be the principal

of a school that is part of a

Christian congregation,

where we start the day with prayer led by our Pastor,

offer daily religious education, and hold weekly

chapel for our students. It is also a school where the

excellent local Character Counts program is

enhanced and strengthened through connections with

Biblical stories and characters. Students leave here

with a solid foundation, spiritually, socially and

emotionally, able to take on the challenges of bigger

schools because they know who they are, beloved

children of God.

Academically, Our Savior’s Lutheran School is one

of the best, with our national test scores showing our

students school wide score better than 84% of all K

–5 students tested in the US. By the time our

students get to the 5th grade, they score better than

90% of all US students. This year, two of our fifth

graders, Max and Brock Bowman, earned second

place in the CA State History Day Competition.

This is your school. Please pray for the school, and

know that you are welcome here any time. Drop in

for chapel any Wednesday morning at 8:45am, or

feel free to visit the classrooms. Just check in to the

office, as we do take the safety of students very

seriously and therefore monitor all visitors during

the school day. Most of all, thank your for your

continued support of this valuable ministry, which

reaches so many lives.

Blessings,

Roberta Wall,

Principal

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in the

truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your

name. Psalm 86:11
