WELCOME Thank you for your participation in the Third Biennial of China-Europa Forum and welcome
to visit The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The purpose of these pre-departure
notes is to provide you with an overview of the logistics in the Biennial and to help you
navigate in Hong Kong and familiarize around PolyU. We sincerely hope you will settle in
with ease and encourage you to enjoy your stay in Hong Kong.

PRE-DEPARTURE PREPARATION
Visa Requirement
By now, you should all have proceeded with tourist visa applications if it deems necessary or
you do not need any visa for traveling from your home country to Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region. You may refer to the official website of the Hong Kong Immigration
Department if you need a visa or entry permit to Hong Kong, and all necessary procedures of
application before traveling to HKSAR:

For mainland Chinese participants, you are required to obtain an Exit-entry Permit for
traveling to/from Hong Kong and Macau and a visa label for individual visit from the relevant
Public Security Bureau Office. Details are available from below:

Pre-departure checklist
Please make sure you have checked the following before your departure:

ARRIVAL ARRANGEMENT
Traveling by air
The Hong Kong Office of China-Europa Forum will arrange airport pick-up service e for all of
you arriving from July 11 to 12, 2010 in the Hong Kong International Airport and Shenzhen
International Airport. The shuttle bus in frequency will be arranged according to your flight
landing timeslot. Once you have picked up your luggage at the airport, you can follow the
signage to “Arrival Hall” and meet up with our staffs who will be holding a sign. The staff will
lead you to the shuttle bus heading respetively for the PolyU Student Halls of Residence and
Regal Kowloon Hotel.
Should you be unable to locate us at the airport, keep calm and call the contact person in
Hong Kong Office or take your own way to PolyU campus.
Transportation from Hong Kong International Airport to PolyU
□ You can reach the Level 3 of Hong Kong International Airport, namely the Bus Terminal,
and find the Air Bus A21. The last stop is Hung Hom KCR Station which is the neighbor of
PolyU. The one-way bus fare is 33 Hong Kong Dollars. It takes about 70-80 minutes from
the Airport to Hung Hom. You can get to either the campus or the Halls of Residence in a
walking distance.
□ You can choose to take a taxi from Airport to Hong Hom which is more convenient and
fast. It takes about 35-40 minutes from the Airport to Hung Hom and costs you about
300 Hong Kong Dollars. Most taxi drivers here understand enough English and
Mandarin to where you desire to head. In case that they find difficult in understanding
you, just show him/her the following address:

Traveling by train
The pick-up service for participants who take train to Hong Kong will also be provided from
July 11 to 12 at Hong Hong Hung Hom KCR Station. According to the arrival time of the
intercity train routes respective from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, the staffs will be
waiting you at the Express Train Arrival Hall and guide you to the PolyU Halls of Residence
and Regal Kowloon Hotel. If you take MTR from Lu Wu to Hung Hom, please also meet with
us at the arrival hall. Hung Hom KCR Station is located next to PolyU campus, and its A Exit
leads to the PolyU campus and B Exit leads to Halls of Residence.

ACCOMMODATION
The participants of the forum will be staying at the PolyU Student Halls of Residence or Regal
Kowloon Hotel from July 11-14 2010.
PolyU Student Halls of Residence
PolyU Student Halls of residence is located at the Hung Hom district of Kowloon peninsula, near
Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR). There are MTR, ferries and buses nearby to get you almost every
corner of Hong Kong. The Student Halls of Residence is connected with the PolyU campus by a
footbridge via the KCR terminal and the Royal Peninsula. It is within 15-minutes walking distance
to the Campus. The panoramic view of Victoria Harbor and the tranquil surrounding of the Hall,
in addition to the shopping malls with fine dining and entertainment facilities in the
neighborhood, make it an ideal place for residence.

Points to note at Halls of Residence
■ Guests shall take proper care of their own safety and personal belongs during their stay in the
Halls, The Halls will not be responsible for any loss of guest’s personal belongings out of the
negligence
■ External visitors are required to register at the G/F Visitor Registration counter at your
presence, and shall be required to leave the Halls by 11:00 p.m.
■ No smoking is allowed in the room or within the Hall premises
■ No gambling of any form is allowed in the Halls
■ No cooking is allowed in the room

In Hong Kong, you can eat food from all over the world: Asian, Chinese, American, British,
Indian, Thai, Italian, French, etc. Eating out is common in Hong Kong and hence the cost is
relatively cheap compared to other countries. You want to try street snack such as curry fish
ball, deep-fried squid, or Hong Kong style restaurants where serving egg tarts and popular
milk tea, or a fine dining in a hotel, you can find almost anything that suits your taste and
budget.

Eating-Out
There are many affordable Chinese and Western restaurants around PolyU. In the area of
East Tsim Sha Tsui, you can have access to Hong Kong/Chinese Restaurants, Taiwanese foods,
Japanese foods, coffee & milk tea shop and bakery etc. In the Hung Hom MTR station, there
are McDonald restaurant, Starbuck café, Maxim Express Food available for you. You are also
recommeded some private restaurants listed here.
AH-SO Japanese Restaurant: The Restaurant is in the heart of the Harbour City 700,
Tsimshatsui of Marco Polo Hotel is in perfect keeping with its neighbourhood.
China Coast Bar & Grill: Probably the first and the only Bar & Grill in the area, the China
Coast Bar & Grill is unique of its kind.
Cafe Aficionado: With an artistic theme carried through the decor, uniforms and tabletops,
Cafe Aficionado offers the best in Oriental and Western fare around the clock.
M Kitchen: The restaurant dominates the upper floor while the lower level is the bar and
cigar room. Immediately to the left after the main front doors is a huge array of fine wines on
display from all over the world. 70% of these wines are imported from France while the rest
come from Spain, West Germany, Italy, Chile, and other parts of Europe.
Bravo: Bravo is situated in Central - heart of Hong Kong. Being a self-service boutique cafe,
Pizza, Pasta, Oriental Rice & Noodles, Sandwich, Salad, Baked Potatoes, Fresh Fruit Juice is
served at reasonable price.
San Francisco Steak House: We learned early that if you want to be the best at something,
then you should not worry about the cost or the trouble. That is why our Certified Angus Beef
is the most beautiful (and costly) in Hong Kong.

CONTINGENCY
When Typhoon Signal No. 8 / Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted, the programme of
the forum on that particular day will be cancelled. However, if the signal is lowered before
12:00 noon, the afternoon programme of the forum will be held as scheduled. If the signal is
lowered before 3:00pm, the evening programme of the forum will be held as scheduled. Other
special arrangement will be made subject to the final decision.
When Typhoon Signal No. 3 or Red Rainstorm Signal is in force, it should be assumed that
the programme of the forum would be held as scheduled.

ABOUT HONG KONG
Currency
The Hong Kong Currency (Hong Kong Dollar) is linked to the US Dollar (USD) at an
approximate rate of USD 1=HKD 7.8. Notes are denominated in 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000.
Coins are in 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10. Traveler’s cheques and foreign currencies can be
exchanged at banks during opening hours, which are usually from 9:00am-4:30pm Mon to
Fri, 24-hr ATMs are widely available.
Drinking water
You are advised to boil the tap water first before you drink it. Some people prefer to drink
bottled water. A large variety of imported drinking water (mineral and others) can be found in
supermarkets.
Electricity
The voltage in Hong Kong is 200/220 volts, 50 cycles. You may wish to bring along a
three-pronged adapter for your own electrical appliances such as mobile phone re charger or
hair-dryer.
Smoking
PolyU is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is also prohibited in all indoor public places as well
as outdoor public spaces such as beaches, swimming pool, escalators, bus-stops and reserved
parks in Hong Kong. A fixed penalty of 1,500 HKD applies for related offences.
Note: You can only smoke in mainly three areas outside the campus. The areas allowed for
smoking are the footbridges leading to the campus, to be precise, the main flyover from
Hung Hom Station to the PolyU Library, the flyover from East Tsim Sha Shui to D
Building, the flyover to from Chatham Road to Y Building.

Telephone calls
Local calls are free except made through public phones, which charges at HKD 1 per 5
minutes. You can ring locally for free at the PolyU Halls of Residence and purchase a pre-paid
calling card to make international calls.
The mobile network in Hong Kong includes HSDPA/ UMTS/ GSM 850/ GSM 900/ GSM
1800/ GSM 1900. If you prefer to bring your own mobile phone to Hong Kong, please ensure
that it will be compatible. Local pre-paid or stored value SIM cards are available at all
convenience stores for sale.
Time Zone
Hong Kong Standard Time is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +8).
Weather
Hong Kong enjoys a humid subtropical climate with distinct seasons. Its summer is very hot.
Typhoon and heavy rainstorms can occur in July, with average temperature between 25-35℃.
When a typhoon is approaching, warnings are broadcast on TV and radio, and signal indicates
the storm’s distance from Hong Kong. If a typhoon comes near (Signal 8), businesses and
shops close down and flights may be cancelled.
You may check the Hong Kong Observatory (www.hko.gov.hk) for weather conditions and
take note of announcements during typhoons and heavy rainstorms.

Banking arrangement
You are advised to bring enough cash, traveller’s cheques, or bank drafts. If you exchange
money before you come, remember to ask for small denomination bank notes (Taxis normally
do not accept notes larger than $500). However, do not carry too much cash at any time. It
will be easy for you to locate banks and currency exchange services here. Most establishments
in Hong Kong accept major credit cards such as VISA, MasterCard and American Express but
most campus outlets take cash only.

GETTING AROUND THE CITY
Hong Kong is a very well connected city and public transportation is widely available at very
reasonable costs. It is very efficient although traffic jams are common, especially during peak
hours.
Buses
Buses cover almost every part of the territory and run from 6:00am till midnight. Overnight
buses are also available with a prefix “N” for some routes. Check the website of major bus
companies for details on routes, schedules and fares.

Mini Buses
They are yellow minbuses with either a red or a green rooftop. They mainly serve areas that
standard bus routes do not cover or reach as efficiently. Green minibuses operate on specific
routes at fixed prices. Exact payment is required when getting on. Octopus card (see below)
are accepted. Red minibuses operate on routes that are not always fixed and passengers can
get on and off anywhere along the route expect where special prohibitions apply. Octopus
card is usually not accepted on red minibuses.
Taxi
“Red” (urban) taxis run through Hong Kong island and Kowloon, “green” taxis in the New
Territories and “Blue” on the Lantau island. The fares of hiring “Red” taxis are:
■ Flagfall: HKD 18
■ Per 200 meters & waiting time per minute:
HKD 1.5 (for meter fare HKD 70.5 and below)
HKD 1 (for meter fare HKD 70.5 and above)
■ Each piece of baggage HKD 5
■ Surcharge for using toll tunnel or toll road applies.
Ferry
Ferry services mainly run between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, Central and Hung Hom, and
Wanchai and Tsim Sha Tsui. There are also ferry services between Central and several
outlying islands, which generally run every hour or three to four times per day, depending on

MTR
MTR runs 11 lines, covering almost every part of Hong Kong. MTR trains operate at every
3-10 minutes’ interval, depending on the time of day, from 5:30am to around midnight. Fares
vary from HKD 3.5 for an adjacent station to a maximum of HKD 100 for the Airport Express.
The station nearest to PolyU is Hung Hom Station on the East Rail Line. Please refer to

Octopus Card
Octopus is the electronic ticketing system that can be used multiple modes of transport
(except taxis and red minibuses) as well as a lot of amenities such as supermarkets, vending
machines and fast food restaurants. You can purchase Octopus Card at the Customer Services
Counter in all MTR station. You can add value too the card at these counters as well as any
convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Circle-K.
